    Man this is amazing! Thought the used board I bought was defective because it didn't report any errors through beeps nor POST screen, there was no display available. But a new BIOS version made it work with the 5800X! Thanks man! MSI should recommend this as the default way to flash a new BIOS.

    I had an issue where the red light blinked for a few seconds and usb drive was read during that brief time, but after that all lights went out and psu fan never came on.
    What worked in my case was pulling out and re-seating all psu-to-motherboard power cables. Meant to have psu off while doing this, but by mistake it was actually switched on and connected to power. In any case, procedure worked like a charm immediately after - just hit reset button, and away she went.
    Posting in case anyone else runs into this issue. Thank you for the video man! Cheers.

      I cannot re-make this because I do not have an order for those two parts. My B550-A Pro loaner is being RMA'd and returned right now as well.
      However, the minimum bios you would require would be 7C56vA4 or use the one on the video, same thing. You will need a graphics card installed because the 5600X does not have integrated graphics.
      Other than that, it should work identically.

      Make sure it's in the correct port and that it is a Fat32 formatted USB with the MSI.ROM file that you wish to flash.
      If that still does the same thing, yes I would RMA the motherboard.
      First rule about building a PC, don't assemble your PC in the case before you do a test boot and can get into BIOS. As it seems that the way you replied implies that you put the entire PC together before hand :)

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, but if the PC posts already you could just do it the normal way with a USB stick and going into the Bios.
      Otherwise, if it is just built and you realized you needed to update, yes you can do this and shouldn't have any issues updating the Bios.

    This board seems to be best value and bang for buck b550 with the features you get and fantastic VRMs however I can't help but wonder what made MSI opt for this greyscale looking BIOS instead of red/black colorway some higher end boards have.
    I know b450 chipset boards by MSI had to sacrifice Click Bios UI and maybe some features in order to accomodate Ryzen 3000 CPUs at the time due to their BIOS chip limitation being 16MB however here that is not the case, all B550 boards come with 32MB chip so the only reason I can think of is because PRO Series is general purpose board class, no fancy RGB and gamer aesthetics like MAG,MPG and MEG series.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ya I am not a huge fan of RGB. It is the Devil's Toy.
      I just did a build with AM5 on a B650 and it's updated bios was Red. So ya, not sure what happened. If I remember correctly, I had a red bios with my X470 board and at some point they switched to grey... it's odd. *shrug* The AM5 board was the MSI B650 Gaming Plus Wifi, and it's actually not a bad motherboard. Very easy to update like this one and smooth sailing.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it is still flashing, let it go. You don't want to power it off just-in-case it's writing the ROM file. You don't want to brick your motherboard. But other than that, if it is doing it like now (been 10h since you posted) There's no real other solution than to turn it off. It should not take that long. You could contact MSI and ask them what may be the problem, or RMA it if it's within exchange with the retailer you bought it from because maybe it's just a bad motherboard?

    Good evening, first of all congratulations for helping so many people with this well-explained video, the thing is that I bought a B450 GAMING PLUS MAX and I put it to update the bios just as you did and nothing, when it comes to putting everything on and turning on it jumps the red light on the motherboard in the part of the cpu as if it were wrong, the thing is that the processor is well positioned, it works, it has no bent pins... I also have to say that when I updated the bios the white color does not jump inside the motherboard. First of all thank you very much.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since it is a different motherboard, the way the lights react when it's complete or any errors may differ slightly. So when you do the bios update, does it do the blinking red light for the bios flash and eventually turn off after a few minutes? If it does, then it should have updated it successfully.
      If the Debug LEDs still show the CPU error, it may be a few things that you could check:
      1. Make sure the Bios version you updated is supported with your CPU or that you updated it to the correct one. If you have an older CPU like 1st or 2nd Gen Ryzen, and you updated it to support a 5000 series potentially, sometimes they remove older models of CPU support to make room for the code. Meaning, it would have disabled say a 1600X or 2600G support on that particular bios. You would need to double check your particular CPU vs. the supported list in the CPU Compatibility. Usually there will be a Bios version between the supported for that CPU and whatever the 5000 support would be, that describes that it removes the 1000/2000 series support.
      2. See if you have the CPU Cooler plugged into the CPU FAN header or appropriate header so that the board knows there is a cooler attached. Sometimes they will not boot if there is no draw on one of the 'CPU' headers (like the pump or cpu_fan).
      3. Ensure you have removed any plastic protector on the CPU Cooler, as it may cause the system to thermal throttle and not POST properly.
      4. Do a CMOS reset to see if some other setting in the Bios has made it so it won't work.
      5. You could contact MSI to see if they can help you with your particular hardware configuration, as they will know any particular pitfalls with some hardware compatibility according to what your specific situation is.

    I need help bc when i finished ubpdating the bios and turning it on nothing was showing up just black screen

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Make sure that if you do not have a "G" Series CPU (like 5600G) you have your graphics card installed and the monitor plugged into the graphics card.
      If you have no graphics card, you need a "G" series CPU and you plug the Monitor into the motherboard.
      Aside from that, it's possible that the update did not take and you may have to redo it. When it is complete, it should take at least 30 seconds, and then the Flash Bios light will go out.
      If the bios button is pressed and it blinks a couple times and goes out, it can't find the bios file on the stick. So go over the files on the USB and make sure you extracted the file directly to the USB and not just put the zip file on it, or renamed the zip file. There is a bios file inside the zip that you extract and then rename it to MSI.ROM.

    I plug in the USB and hit the button. Machine starts, runs for a bit then shuts down, and powers back up. The red flashing stops when it restarts. I have to shut it off. I put in CPU, ram and cooler. Plug in monitor, turn on psu and get nothing. Note CPU debug light never goes off. Already swapped out CPU, for a compatible one. Was thinking BIOS version but have tried many and flushed the cmos via battery removal.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The machine should not start when you push the flash bios button. I would check your power connections to everything to make sure they're not semi-connected and causing some sort of freak-out or short-type of situation.
      All you should really need is the 24-pin and the 8-pin CPU Power connections, you can take the RAM out of the system if you want to as it is not needed, just to make sure the system doesn't try to POST.
      If you have a compatible CPU though, you should be able to get it to POST to bios and do the update within the bios. No need for the flashback bios button at that point.

    • @Kardall

      Windows 11 has requirements for the motherboard that you have to enable in the Bios.
      As per Microsoft's Hardware Requirements ( learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/windows-11-requirements#hardware-requirements ):
      System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable.
      TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.
      You will have to look through the Bios on where to enable those features or if there is a Bios manual (sometimes MSI has a separate manual for it), then it will tell you what category it is in. But normally it's in some sort of Chipset sub-menu or sometimes they hide it in the Boot menu. I don't have a board I can spin up to tell you where it is unfortunately :(

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have a 400 series motherboard and even a lot of 500 series motherboards, yes you will have to do the bios update. You should look up your motherboard on the web and look at the support -> cpu compatibility chart and it will tell you what Bios version your CPU is supported as of. Then you download that, perform the update with the button should you have one.
      If you don't, you will need either a compatible CPU or a loaner kit from AMD, I did a video covering this as well: th-cam.com/video/rZXcuSY_-Tg/w-d-xo.html

    I have a ryzen 5 5700g so I do have intergrated graphics. What parts are absolutely needed to just start and get it in bios? And I don’t need cooling it can just be on top of box while in bios settings?

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      to do the actual test after the flash, you need:
      RAM, CPU, Cooler, 24-pin power, 8-pin CPU power, and your HDMI/DisplayPort from your motherboard connected to your monitor in this situation. The 5700G has Integrated graphics, so you don't have to connect your GPU.
      You can totally build the machine before doing all this stuff. It's just not necessary and can save time with removal and re-installation if you have to RMA components. That's the only reason that people do it. To verify that the system will POST (Power On Self Test) and get into a Bios screen.
      A stock cooler does not need to be removed after you test it, in order to throw the motherboard into the case. It shouldn't block any motherboard mounting points so, you should be able to access the screws.

      Also, keep in mind, this is to make it so that the board works with a 5000 series CPU and it does not support any CPU before 3000 series. So if you are trying to use a 1600 or 2600x etc., it won't work either way.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you get the parts, you put the parts together on the motherboard box. Then do your flash update.
      When you put it in the case, the only thing you need to remove is the cables for the power and maybe your AIO but... you could probably manhandle it or if someone is there to hold the radiator while you mount the board in the case. You can leave the CPU installed, RAM, M.2 if you have one. If you are using a G series or doing this on a 7000/8000 series with iGPU then you can just leave out your graphics card, and POST the system with the motherboard HDMI instead. It should give you an output when it is successful.
      It can be done.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If your PC is booting to bios, you can do an update using the base ROM file that you download, from inside the Bios screen. You don't have to use the Flash Bios button. If you keep going to Bios after turning the system on, that means that the system can't find the Boot drive (if you have even installed your OS yet).
      Since you can get video output, you should be good to install your OS now, you can always update the bios later using the windows utility or other methods that do not require the 'bios flashback button'. Which is really only necessary if your CPU does not have support on the current version of the Bios.

      You can install the aio sure, it will just be a little more difficult putting it into the case, but it is doable. Just put a box or something that is roughly the same height as the case on the side so you can rest the AIO on it while you install the motherboard. Otherwise you'll need another set of hands to hold the AIO for you while you install the motherboard in the case.

      It can literally take like 5 min +
      Also, as long as you have the MSI.ROM file for the motherboard in the root folder of the USB drive (lets say it is F:), it would be F:\MSI.ROM like was said in the video, then it should detect it as long as it's the correct bios file for that motherboard. You have to rename the file from the zip file you download from MSI.
      But eventually what should happen is the red light goes off and the white LED debug light will stay on.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to remove any thermal paste from the CPU if you are using the included pre-applied thermal paste on the AIO. Not doing so may cause air bubbles and therefore heat buildup on the CPU.
      Yes you will need to use the GPU after flashback to verify it took. You can put the GPU wherever you want, that's up to you.
      When cleaning the thermal paste, a cloth or something that doesn't leave fibers is what you're looking for. Swabs are usually good for a final thing as long as you don't catch it on any of the other components on the CPU that are exposed. It may tear fibers off the q-tip. But if you're careful it usually isn't an issue.
      Good luck. Pretty much everything that you need to do is in this video, however I did a live stream a while ago (between this video and any newer ones) where I chat with viewers and answered questions, but it's a complete build from start to finish with chapter markers if you have time. Check it out, it may help you especially when it comes to cable management. • @Kardall
      @Kardall  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If your CPU is not a "G series" assuming that it's a 5000 series CPU, then it won't have integrated graphics. So to get a video output after the Bios flash, you will need to at least connect the GPU to the motherboard and the power connectors for the GPU when you try to boot it up for the first time after the flash.
      It should go into Bios automatically or give you an 'unbootable media' type of message on the screen. But other than that, you should just need:
      1. 24-Pin Power to the Motherboard
      2. CPU 8-pin power for the flash
      3. USB with the bios file renamed to MSI.ROM (not the zip file, the rom file is inside the Zip file so you need to extract it and rename it into the root folder of the Fat32 formatted USB drive)
      Then you plug power into the power supply, turn the switch on the back if it has one, and push the flash bios button on the motherboard as I did in the video. You do not need the CPU installed, the RAM or any drives connected to perform this other than the USB drive in the correct slot.
      Once the red light stops flashing, the Debug LED light will stay on, but the red light will stop flashing and turn off.
      Then you can turn off the power supply, or unplug it. Install your CPU and a cooler, RAM, connect your graphics card and it's required power cables. Connect a monitor to the GPU and then short the Power SW pins on the motherboard as indicated in the manual and on the motherboard (it's printed). I kind of show it in the video as well though it's tiny and hard to see.
      You should at least get a video signal at that point, to which you can proceed to power the system off and continue with your installation into the case as normal.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The screwdriver to short the pins is simply because the motherboard is not installed in a case with a 'power button'. The screwdriver does the exact same thing as pushing the power button on a PC case. It causes a short between the two pins on the motherboards 'Front Panel IO' area, labeled "Power SW" usually.
      You don't have to do this, but it's always good practice to ensure the system POSTs outside of the case before installing, that way if you need to RMA any faulty components beyond the RAM like lets say there's a problem with the motherboard itself, you don't have to spend the time to remove ALL of the components from the case. You just simply unplug and put it back in the box etc.. Saves time.
      Plus, if the system POSTs outside of the case, and then does not when you put it in, you know something happened during the installation process that caused the issue.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normally you put the essentials on the board to get to a POST screen. Just put it on the motherboard box, connect the CPU Power, 24-pin Motherboard Power, install your CPU and cooler (even temporarily just use the stock one to make sure it posts if you got an AIO or other cooler for the final build) and your graphics card if you don't have integrated graphics.
      That way you know it works and you get a video output. Doing this will save you the many minutes of removing the board if necessary, remounting your cooler or anything of that sort.
      Also, before you finish cable management, make sure the system posts in case you have to remove or unplug/replace cables etc..
      There is no harm as long as you don't move the board rapidly and cause stress on the GPU socket it is installed on, and pretty much everyone does this. Those who don't risk the waste of time it takes to remove and swap out components after RMA'ing DOA components (like your motherboard). Super frustrating to have the entire system installed, and then the motherboard won't post because it has a bad CMOS chip, or someone else did a bad flash and bricked it, then returned it and it got re-entered into circulation and you ended up with it. It happens. Do things outside of the case for your own sanity.

      Yes you can. And to try to answer the other question. If the light is solid and lot blinking at all, then it has encountered some error and halted the update process. Go through the checklist of requirements: Fat32 Formatted Drive, Correct Bios for your motherboard downloaded, extracted the rom file to the USB, renamed the file to MSI.ROM
      Try a different drive if it still does it, but that's all you should have to do.

      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bjelabosna Make sure that you have renamed the file correctly. If you have file extensions hidden, you may have renamed it MSI.ROM.C41 or whatever the original extension actually is. If it isn't called MSI.ROM then it will not be able to find it, which sounds like what it's doing. But there isn't a set LED patterns list anywhere.

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you press the Flash Button, it should immediately start blinking which tells you that it is reading the USB and doing things. If it stays on, it's some sort of error. If it cannot see the MSI.ROM file on the USB drive, make sure it is renamed correctly (show file extensions if you have it disabled so it's not like MSI.ROM.a96 or whatever the original file was). And go through your checklist of FAT32 formatted, all files in the base drive not inside any folders on the USB drive, etc..

    my b550 tomahawk didnt work after flash bios.I back board to store,now waiting seller answer what is wrong

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว

      Bad flashes do occur. Could be a problem with the board itself, or maybe the wrong bios version for the time. There are some boards that have a sequence of updates you have to do because they change the format of the bios file itself throughout the course of the lifespan of the motherboards update history.
      B550 is still fairly new and I haven't seen many of them do this, mostly it is to do with AMD boards going from 1st Gen Ryzen through to the 5th Gen that have this issue more commonly.
      Good luck, hope you get it sorted :)

      You can use this process to update the Bios period. Doesn't matter what CPU you have as long as it 'works in the board', this process lets you update the Bios without a CPU. So as long as you update it to a version that the CPU Compatibility lists as the minimum Bios that supports that particular CPU model, then you are good.

    Hey, I was wonderingif it is possible to do this bios update, while a cpu is already installed. Or is there a different way for this?

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can. Use the same process regarding power and such, and the system will work like normal. If you are trying to do an upgrade and you have video already though, you don't need to use this. You can do it the normal way by just using the flash utility in the bios itself. As long as you can get to the bios.

    hey i’m running out of trouble shooting ideas. i’ve tried em all but why does mine stop blinking red after the white light comes on then blinks again for like 5 seconds and never blinks red again. i’ve done everything thing the way you did i even disk part cleaned the usb like others have recommended. i’ve still can’t find out why it won’t update the bios. thanks

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure you're using the correct port? There is a specific one you use for the USB. On the rear IO shield it outlines it I believe in a border or labeled depending on the model. But it's usually the one next to the button if it's side by side.
      Another thing, make sure you have the exact motherboard bios. For example, a B450 Gaming Plus Max is not the same as a B450M Gaming Plus Max, and a B450 Gaming Plus is not the same as a B450 Gaming Plus Max. Make sure it's the exact model.

    Hello and thank you for the video. On the official page, the new BIOS driver is version 7C56vAC1 (Beta version), which is still in beta. Should I use this version or the previous version that you are using in the video? What do you recommend I do?

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Use the non beta one and see if it works. If you still have issues the beta one may fix a problem, however, it isn't 'stable' or it would be in release status so... risky.

    Hey man i just finished a build and the cpu light was on so I checked it and stuff and no issue and I found your video and tried doing the bios everything was going along well like in your tutorial but I’m not posting after the red light is done blinking and still stuck on white cpu light

    • @Kardall
      @Kardall  ปีที่แล้ว

      So the Bios LED flashed and after like 5 minutes or so it turned off? Sometimes the CPU light won't shut off on some models, but when the red light for the Flash Bios LED goes off, you should be able to power down the system and install your cooler and such so the system has a 'load' on the CPU_FAN header. Sometimes they won't POST as a self-preservation thing, so you don't overheat the CPU. Not sure how far you have gotten with the build, but you can assemble everything outside of the case on the motherboard box like I did in the video.
      Hard to say what might be wrong.

      When you do this through the bios, don't rename the file. This is only for using the Flash Bios Buttons on motherboards, where you cannot get into the bios.
