      As a south korean myself, i went through these three phases.First, i was proud as a korean observing how kpop was getting international recognition because of psy 2ne1 bigbang and others(also i was a hardcore yg and sm fan). In this initial phrase i was basically influenced by korean media as showing the korean wave as how great we are. Going through middle school tho i had a very contradicting trend of thought that made me sort of a hipster (but not fully i couldnt hate idol music fully cause they were always catchy)and hate idol music and listen to american pop or k rock or hiphop or k hiphop(to me it was still hiphop) or indie music(and pop just has a image of somewhat advanced in south korea idk so like they have radios in korea that analyze pop and there was like watch me(naenae) regarded as music thats trendy and some sort of model music lol).And this influenced my second phase of thought, that kpop even tho big as it seems, that it is called that way because those idols are cute and dance well. This seems like a compliment at first but it seemed to me that kpop might be like some sort of an asian designation to what the korean music industry can offer into just what " asians" can do and not seem to be appreciated as they can with pop(i mean you dont call american pop a-pop). Thats why i supported foreign fans introducing designations like k hiphop or k rock or k indie cause i think people appreciate the genre more and not limit it to industrially produced music(and i dont think thats not a reason to say its lowering the quality of music either) just like jpop is considered as. Now finally i think kpop is still a good name since its just a word recapping what we can offer and just every artist doing their part, and also realizing even if we do foreign genres like hiphop or any dance genre there is still a difference in what sound is preferred and how we made some of the elements our own. I just hope that foreign people nowadays who dont know kpop enough would differentiate educated kpop fans and koreaboos so that they realize that good music comes from everywhere.

      @@bojackthetrustworthy736 well kpop always tried to copy or try new stuff that the music scene hasnt tried it yet. For me, it was very interesting that people overseas think of kpop as a genre when honestly ft island is just categorized as rock in the local music classifications in korean websites. So i guess you should change your music classification to south korean music instead of kpop. It just gives a false impression that its the same when its wronfully classified as one genre just because its a non english song

    so basicly, Kpop is not a genre. it's just to say: it's a "pop"song from Korea

    • @motro1301
      @motro1301 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well to call all of korean music pop is also misleading. Its safe to assign the label of kpop to south korean idol music only, and treat different genres in south korean music industry differently. As a south korean my self tho, i would say besides the traditional genres like guk-ak(thats what we call korean traditional music) and trot(actually this is more of a korean version of japanese music called enka. Thats why a lot of south korean trot artists also gain popularity in japan. And trot was the dominant genres till the 1990s), south korean music industries has generally followed and reflected the trends of american music. In the60s and 70s acoustic guitar artists were popular like simon and garfunkel was popular in america. In the 80s local rock and roll bands were popular in college music competitions(it was called dae-hak gayoje and it was huge. Lot of local stars like imjaebum was born. Tho he is more considered as a ballad or soft rock musician, he was very hard core rock) and as reflected in the 88 seoul olympic games, the band koreana sang the olympic anthem.
      But in the 90s it all changed because of seotaeji and boys(they were originally in hardcore rock bands here but they changed to hiphop after hearing about artists like cypress hill) brought hip hop to the south korean audience. After that there was a huge boom in terms of idol music and ballad musicians which continues to this day dominating the industry. But there were still local artists here trying different genres. However, the reason why musicians of other genres suffered was because of the infamous accident that happened in the early 2000s. Back then, punk and indie band scenes were booming so local broadcasting system mbc wanted to showcase one of the bands in their pg 13 music shows. But one of the punk band members suddenly publicly went naked and it went live on television, which ended in the end of the show. After that people wanted to clean television shows that a lot of indie bands suffered till 2011 when bands like 10cm debuted that not a lot of different genres were represented as they should.

    This is what got me into kpop, I wish western pop used more genres for inspiration. Kpop plays with music more and it’s awesome! There’s so much room for unique sounds when you put together something completely different, forget hip hop inspired ABAB song # 3 million, I want my music to get weird with it. Take Zimzalabim, America would NEVER. There were 3/4 distinct sounds pulling inspiration from multiple genres and it did a great job of feeling like a literal roller coaster which was SO COOL.

    • @homo_mabilis
      @homo_mabilis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      kpop songs with structures like zimzalabim and other "rare-type-of-edm-that-it's-not-commonly-heard-in-the-American-music-but-still-has-decent-lyrics" (like psytrance in scream and side effects) are the reasons why i couldn't let go of kpop that easily🤚🏻😌

      Lara Kagamine I knew it, but most of them are from older songs. They usually only use a type of the house genre now in recent Kpop songs, so that's why it now all sounds the same

    • @Sullly
      @Sullly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@KpopStan2009 Actually, K-pop these days is still quite varied. I think the reason OP used music from all generations is to show that kpop has always had a multitude of genres. Even out of kpop songs only from this year (2019) there have been countless genres included. Big Room from Everglow- Adios, Rock from DAY6- Sweet Chaos, Pop from Red Velvet- Umpa Umpa, Musical Theater from JYP- Fever, RnB from GOT7- You Calling my Name, Hip Hop from Stray Kids- 19, etc etc. Maybe you listen to a lot of similar-sounding kpop, but it doesn't all sound the same recently.

  • @minokim7756
    @minokim7756 7 ปีที่แล้ว +99

    Wow I seriously love this ! People should pay attention to how diverse is the kpop scene ^^ But I had to tell that some bands you mentioned in this aren't really considered "Kpop". For example, Ft island is more seen as a Krock band, and, I remember there was an interview where Jambinai was talking about kpop saying that it's a genre that is sadly throwing shade to bands like them as it hides indie artists behind that whole idol thing so I don't think they'll be happy to be labeled "Kpop" ^^
    PS: for more "Classical music" kpop : Tvxq - triangle and Shinhwa - T.O.P (I love these things seriously)
    PS2: I was kind of suspicious when I saw "heavy metal" for dreamcatcher I think they're more rock or maybe pop metal but heavy metal is Metallica so idk doesn't seem right

    • @cartoonplanettv
      @cartoonplanettv  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Thank you so much for your comment!! And you are totally right,
      I added bands like Ft Island as they're part of known kpop companies and participe in music shows, etc. (In the end they're part of the k-pop industry) But yes, they're mainly denominated as k-rock.
      Same with Jannabi, they aren't k-pop, and this is paradoxical because indie can't be part of kpop in any way as it's the denomination of independient music. But i wanted to add indie to the list :B .My bad for not clarifying it.
      Answer to PS2: I confess that i don't really know, i researched for it and i found many people denominating it heavy metal but i wasn't that sure. I ended writing it because i compared dream catcher with the Japanese girl band Babymetal (And as i understood they're known for doing heavy metal) and i found it pretty similar, i hope i'm not being ignorant, sorry ^^; . (And remember that the song "Good night" Is the one being denominated as heavy metal and not dreamcatcher).
      Please let me know if you find more infomation of it because i'd be very helpful!

      @minokim7756 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oh I see I see ^^ and you don't have to excuse yourself haha >//<
      For dreamcatcher, I would have compared them more to some BiSH songs and they're considered alternative metal from what I've seen (maybe my sources are not very reliable though so I don't really know >>). I feel like Babymetal songs are very heavy compared to Good Night (on Good Night the music is very low when they sing the verses and the drums aren't as loud as they could be on the few heavy metal songs I heard) ... btw I don't have a lot of knowledge on "how to qualify a song" so I don't really know TT

    • @cartoonplanettv
      @cartoonplanettv  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only k-pop songs that are straight up classical music i can mention you are from ATEEZ, Beggining of the end (Which is totally instrumental), and Long Journey (Which has a monologue)., they're both very short.
      There must be more, but as you can see classical music is only used for intros, outros, etc.
      Let's hope someday there's a full version of a straight-up classical song, maybe there's some ballad mostly classical, but i don't know much about ballads.

    I was planning to upload it last month but i had to stop it... I guess you know why.
    It was a bit hard for me to make the videos feeling sad so i decided to wait until things get normal again.

    CORRECTIONS!
    1. Classical Crossover
    3. Probably Old-Sokol Hip Hop, actually.
    10. I hear a bit more Trap EDM, sorry.
    11. Probably Lounge or British Invasion idrk
    13. Contemporary RnB
    15. This is a SECTION in the song, not the full song.
    17. Sounds more like Synthpop but ok ig
    20. I don’t hear Trip Hop at ALL lmao
    21. This is ELECTRO POP, not Disco.
    29. DANCEFLOOR DnB, not regular dnb.
    36. More Surf Rock
    39. Euphoric Hardstyle, actually.
    40. That doesn’t sound like polka AT ALL 💀
    41. EuroBEAT
    42. Maybe we can generalize this as EDM instead methinks?
    51. This might have more Tropical House and Future Bass influences rather than Deep House ones. A better example of this would be Shinee’s “View”.
    55. This is also eurodance!
    56. Sounds more like Symphonic Rock
    69. I mean it IS trap but it’s Trap HIP HOP
    71. I see this as more synthpop/dream pop-leaning
    73. The better example would be “Rude Love” but “4 Walls” is also Deep House
    77. According to Rate Your Music, it’s apparently “Twerk” and “Novelty”, whatever tf THAT means.
    79. More Future-Bass leaning
    82. Also Big Band!
    88. Don’t really hear the Breakbeat. A better example is “Voltage” by ITZY
    93. Also CLASSICAL CROSSOVER
    100. This might also be BOUNCE
    103. Also features a prominent breakbeat!
    thank me later

    Thanks for making this!! I got to learn some new stuff :) and if you're ever thinking of making a part 2, I have some song suggestions! NCT U's The 7th Sense (alternative trap?), EXO's El Dorado and Been Through, Red Velvet's Happiness. These are the songs I can think of that sound really different from the usual K-pop! Have a great day :D

      Of course, the song i selected as egyptian music is mainly trap, and the other one selected for arabic music is mostly dance pop. But as the melodies and some rythms and harmonies are based in those music styles i named them like that. (The same happens with a lot of other songs in the list, actually 😅)

    Can someone plz tell what it is in the ends of Treasure's song. Like what beat or genre is it. Like in I love you, MMM, Jikjin, Boy. What is its name, of the genre. And is it also the same as of Ateez. Like in wonderland, pirate king. Plz tell if anyone knows about their music type. I want to know what kind of music do i like.
    Thanks

    • @cartoonplanettv
      @cartoonplanettv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Treasure uses a lot of dance pop, hybrid trap, big room house and hiphop trap in their music:
      -'I love you' starts with dance pop in the 1st verse, it switches to big room house in the chorus and it switches to hip-hop trap in the 2nd verse.
      -Jikjin is has a similar formula to 'i love you' but it switches to hybrid trap in the chorus and uses electro house in the last chorus.
      -Mmm is hybrid trap and 'Boy' is electro pop.
      Ateez uses hybrid trap, future bass and electropop.
      Wonderland is hiphop trap and it uses marching band instruments (drumline). And Pirate king is hard trap/hybrid trap.
      So you may like: Trap (including Hip-hop trap, hard trap and hybrid trap), House (electro house and big room house) and Dance pop (electropop).

      Yes, you are right.
      But I said in the comments that I counted songs that used characteristics of other music genres.
      In this case some chord progressions, instruments and melodies are intentionally taken from flamenco.
      I should've written "flamenco vibes" tho.

    Edit: IMO that Gfriend' songs genre is Pop rock, Exid is soul R&B, and Mamamo i dont know.

    • @cartoonplanettv
      @cartoonplanettv  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gfriend tends to combine ballad structures with hip hop beats, and as you said in songs like Rought it's pop rock. (Always keeping the ballad vibes).
      Exid usually sings R&B
      Mamamoo's You're the best has funky vibes and a hiphop beat, i'd actually call it funk.
      And i can't really tell you for Wind flower, it has a noticeable acoustic guitar, hip hop beats, a funky bass and a jazzy piano at the chorus. I know there's an specific genre for the song but i can't tell the exact name :c
