I used to be a pretty serious player, I was in a rock band, had a studio and worked as sound engineer and music producer too but I decided to give up music and guitar completely back in 2006 and sold all my gears. Only in 2018 when I bought an acoustic guitar and start playing only for a little fun, and recently bought a second hand electric guitar and start taking it more seriously. Bumping into your channel makes me start all over again, it's like relearning everything from zero 😂 It feels like rediscovering my old passion, I guess I owe you big thanks for that 😄

2nd LEVEL: Use the already traditional phrases. (B.B. KING and such...)
3rd LEVEL: Use chord tones.
Listen to the phrasing of Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, George Benson, Charlie Christian, and Barney Kessel.

Don’t forget, steal and imitate licks from the greats, then later analyze it and understand what it is harmonically ... that way you can apply it in other situations. So you learn a lick and you discover that the note emphasized is a 6th tone overlaying a 1 chord. Cool! Now you know you’ll enjoy this sound (harmony) and can use it in other situations

Jazz noodlers? While I really appreciate Jazz, what catches my ear, is the player who invents lines and takes it to where it's never been before. But to learn jazz noodling is important to give you that boost to the nether realm. I also hear bass walking blues lines that are influenced by jazz noodling. Thanks again Tomo, insight is everything, and watching and listening to your vast experience is giving me GOLD and ROSE! Thumbs Carlille is one of my big jazz/country influences, besides cousin Jimi.

Yet another Tomo's amazing video. Were I to highlight something in this video lesson, it'd be the realization that how very simple ideas (phrases) can become interesting music when properly handled. I loved the harmony in the background line you added to the chord progression. Thanks for sharing this knowledge.

Basically to play jazz well... you need only 2-3 phrases but you need to know what beat to start or what beat you play "REST" No sound is very effective!! That's what I teach when I teach. Use what I call the Super-Blues scale.
Take your minor pentatonic.
Add the #4/b5 to make it the Blues scale.
Now add 2-3-6 from Mixolydian.
So you have Mixolydian with b3 and b5, the Blues notes along with b7.
The formula is 1-2-b3-3-4-b5-5-6-b7.
Always go from b3 to 3, resolving into a chord tone, and never the other way around.
Learn this scale out of the 5 CAGED shapes, and you’ll be playing all over the neck.

I think one of the problems I have is that when I started learning as a teenager, all I cared about was learning songs, and the licks of my guitar heroes. When I got to that point and got more serious about my playing - (I almost auditioned for Berklee in Boston) I tried to learn basic theory and reading music - which I could understand, but not at a deep level. Now that I am older a lot of pieces that were missing when I was younger are coming together thanks to TH-cam. My left hand is much more efficient than my right, and I know what every note is on the guitar as long as its in my hands. But I still could not follow this lesson because I don't know all of the chord voicings and my rhythm is off because the timing on "jazz blues" is a little different than what I am used to. Music teachers should try to incorporate more theory into those beginning guitar lessons. Its hard to do without a teenager getting bored. But anyway, keep up the videos just watching and listening helps a lot, maybe I will go to Berklee when I retire to finally learn how to do what I wanted to do most when I was 17!
No worry! That's very normal as guitar players. Too much information too! All you need to step back a few steps then you will see things very clear! No need to worry nothing!
