Great lesson and advices! Another aspect of working with a metronome is to make it groove, have the click on the 2 and 4, use it as a counter point. Also playing the phrase in a different time signature..or changing the phrasing/ accent.

I really enjoyed this lesson, thank you. Your point about setting a timer and working within a comfortable tempo seem great for certain passages. And your focus on timing and tone are critical points that are often not stressed enough! I disagree slightly with a few points you make, which perhaps is due to the time limits of making a video: * building endurance. I've sometimes run into fatigue or tension during practice, and used to think that I just needed to build endurance ... but actually, the tension and fatigue was telling me that my technique was wrong. The same thing happens to piano players. Working with and through the fatigue isn't the right approach, IMO. Sometimes you need to stop and re-evaluate what you're doing. * starting slow and speeding up. This can be a tough one, but sometimes the motions used at slow speed just don't work at higher speeds. For someone like you, who appears to have great technique and feel, you're likely using the same correct motion at slow and fast tempo, but I've found that sometimes I had the wrong mental model of what was needed for playing, and that model simply didn't translate to higher speeds. Also, the nervous system can function differently at high speeds than it does at slow speeds. I agree that slow practice is absolutely essential, but sometimes one has to push a bit to see what works and what falls apart. It's a hard balancing act to do. Great video and delivery, cheers!

I start that way then stop and break it down into positions and fingering,developing a slow version to repeat. I want to like hearing and playing the phrase. Next the metronome for speed.

Had an illness that stopped me playing for 3months which has set me back 😢😢. This is a great back to basics workout. Sometimes I think I’ll never get the double down stroke, not at speed anyway?? One of the most important advice for musicians of any kind (and for rest ppl too). When I was young impatient kid I aquired bad habit to accelerate while learning fortepiano, and if I somehow managed to finish classes successfully, later it turned out against me, when I started with classic guitar, it was just crashing blow to my ego, so I give up and quit learning quickly. Thank you very much for sharing wisdom.
I was playing with a friend the other day and he’s played for years. He asked me about a certain scale and he was unable to play it at a slow tempo! He insisted on speeding up each time he made a pass. I pointed it out and he was surprised, he said he work on it, we’ll see…

@josefinacupido9872 if you are talking about the arpeggio exercise, I'm playing the notes of the chords of the song in 2 octaves. For example, the first chord is C major 7, so I play C, E, G, B and then repeat an octave higher. The next chord is E7, etc.

A question; Where is that O4 note come from in the lower octave ? A perfect 5th would be my normal expectation. Did you have a chord with an extra colour tone in mind ?
@terpentoon If I understand correctly, you're referring to the A note on the 4th string? That would be the b7 of B. Yes, I had in mind B9 (dominant with the 9th), same fingering as D#-7b5. I hope this helps, let me know if there's anything else

@terpentoon ah ok, I get it now, thanks for the breakdown:) yes, you could totally play the perfect 5th and there would be nothing wrong with it, but I personally prefer the tension that the chromatic line of the last 3 notes creates with the flat 5. With the perfect 5th it sounds more proper so again, nothing wrong at all, but just a question of preference
@gibson2623 This is something mostly implemented by classical guitarists, I've tried it but I prefer to have my guitar rest on the right leg, as do most gypsy jazz guitarists. To each their own

Please don't get me wrong, your lesson is good, but why do teachers (the vast majority of them do) talk so much instead of just playing? Personally, I find all the explanations of why you shouldn't do this or that to be a distraction. Just show how you approach the problem. For example, show a difficult sequence and how you approach it step by step. Please excuse me for criticizing you, I could do that to most teachers. And maybe I'm an isolated case and many students love it when you explain to them what they shouldn't do and why. But when I see someone who shows me the way by actually walking it and not talking about it too much, and I see how they get to the goal, that convinces me much more and helps me better than any words.

But that's just my opinion and I could be wrong. I think your lessons are very valuable despite my criticism.
This took me awhile to realize, but the problem is that i am 40 so speed is something i doubt will come in my lifetime. Genetics hits you hard, but i believe if i ever have a kid i can pass along the rest stroke through my dna. But i will have to thank Christiaan van Hemert for teaching it, and the players who showed him. For me my speed if i was to learn a new song would only get to the speed of elevator music. 😅 but i do know it could get faster, it just takes tens of thousands of quality repetitions in a quality setting. Problem is in Texas there are no gypsy jazz communities to jam with which is unfortunate, we have other cultures here which unfortunately my soul doesnt resonate with. I think it is probably our danish heritage why i gravitate towards gypsy jazz, i think i have heard my parents say we might have migrated here from denmark.
@bradejensen yes, I suggest to just focus on the quality repetitions, time will do the rest:) Many people have this problem where they don't know who or where to play...

The best tip I can give is that the guitar is resting on your wrong leg. Rest it om your left leg and you ll improve evrything.
