I love Ironwood as a character too, however he’s not really a villain but he’s definitely an antagonist. I’d categorize him as an anti-hero who’s delving into paranoia/ptsd-driven insanity. His behavior right now was even teased by Glynda back in V2 Ch10, just pair it with mental trauma and you get:

So having politics essentially get in the way of a proper defense just because it’s technically morally wrong is absurd. Imagine if you were an officer in a war and you had to take opinions about how to handle a combat situation from an elected official. There are times and places for elected officials to have a say in military matters. That is not when your top general is making calls on how to deal with combat situations that could bring down an entire country.
