Also, this is me being somewhat opinionated, but, a morally grey area CANNOT exist in RWBY.
Either people fight and die together, or the Grimm will kill them all.
You can’t afford to fight amongst yourselves for even a minute or you get attacked by monsters.
Also, with Ironwood as a dictator general, who needs Salem to wipe out Remnant, she can sit on her throne and watch.
She has no need to act.

I love Ironwood as a character too, however he’s not really a villain but he’s definitely an antagonist. I’d categorize him as an anti-hero who’s delving into paranoia/ptsd-driven insanity. His behavior right now was even teased by Glynda back in V2 Ch10, just pair it with mental trauma and you get:

To be fair, its the wrong choice, its exactly as Salem planned.
The moment he killed one of his own, he played right in her hands.
The news will spread, tensions will rise, and infighting will happen with Salem having to do the bare minimum to defeat Atlas.
I would not be surprised if Ironwood gets lynched before the end with the civilians and army killing each other while Grimm feed on the negative emotion from all that.

He had to deal with pretty much everything for so long, even earlier when the rwby team arrived at atlas, ruby herself mentioned that the general looked tired. He had to deal with the politics, grims, betrayals, arguments and differing opinions, the people who didn't trust him, people who framed him, etc etc. He's had enough at this point.

@@Southhs You're talking about the same bastard who disobeyed Ozpin from the start and who later tried to imprison Team RWBY just because Blake and Yang had told Robyn what was going on. I find it stupid that he tried to arrest Ruby--RUBY ROSE, a SILVER EYED warrior, one of the ONLY few people CAPABLE of defeating Salem--and he tries to arrest her and her team. And then going all coward and sacrificing the people of Mantle just to keep ATLAS, which is mostly filled with racist arrogant rich people, safe. Yeah, in the end, he only cares about those with political gain. He doesn't give two shits about innocents. I'm sorry, but Ironwood deserves to die.

@@Drakromdemonbro you clearly don’t know the situation then. Let’s think about this, martial law is completely reasonable in this situation.
The end of a entire country is on the line here. So having politics essentially get in the way of a proper defense just because it’s technically morally wrong is absurd. Imagine if you were an officer in a war and you had to take opinions about how to handle a combat situation from an elected official. There are times and places for elected officials to have a say in military matters. That is not when your top general is making calls on how to deal with combat situations that could bring down an entire country.
