- How to trouble shoot and repair an Atwood Gas pilot Water heater.in this case it was a bad Gas Control Valve. New Control unit available at amzn.to/3ciE00j
The Thermocuple /pilot tube at amzn.to/39mG84Q
and if you need the burner tube amzn.to/39sl3FU
Thank you for this video. As a woman, this was extremely intimidating for me. I am not handy like most guys are. So this video helped a lot with knowledge confidence.
I will say to anyone having trouble after install, watch you burner tube, if is not right, the flame and pilot light will go out after a minute. Also, if you tighten the thermocouple line too much, the pilot light will not stay lit when changing from pilot to on. I have no idea why but that was my problem.
But again, thank you for this video. It is so hard to get service men out to trailer sites. I would have gladly paid if I could get someone, but I couldn’t and this video SAVED me.
Awesome Glad I could help
Have this exact water heater/value and set up. Hard to find video that doesn't have the RV - electrical water heater stuff. Thanks for all the explaination and details. Time for me to do like you have and start with the Pilot assembly. Great video and details!
Followed your lead and my older Atwood now works again. Good job!
This video just made my day. My G6A-7 is doing the exact same thing. Just ordered the pilot assembly. Hoping I dont need a control valve. If I do, at least I have some knowledge of what to do. I got nervous looking at a replacement control valve since it didnt match. What I have and the replacement part that I found are spitting images of yours. Thanks so much, very helpful in my case. Good work!
yes that's a new revised /superseded part the old one is not made anymore.
I was s shocked 350 bucks for the gas valve Amazon had whole units for 300 to 600 I got a whole unit
great video, just bought an old RV with this assembly and found your video. excellent walk thru, look forward to tackling this
Replaced the same exact model with the same exact (newer model).. You did everything I did. Only thing is I removed the heat shields first. Because I knew I was gonna have to remove it knowing the knobs would be obstructed. Thing works like a charm... Only problem is I gotta find a better way of shielding it from wind blowing the pilot out. The cover sucks and a good gust of wind will send u back to square 1.😡
LOL on a real windy day mine does that as well.
Did you find solution to protect from wind? Please share
Nicely done! Thank you for taking the time to create this. It is most helpful! Best to you.
Back again. The Atwood Gas Control Valve shown is no longer produced. Dometic bought Atwood and canceled all production forcing people to buy a new Dometic water heater. Sigh. However, IF you are able to find a Robertshaw 110-503 (Robertshaw Uniline, Brownsville, TX 951-734-2600), it will indeed fit. They can direct you to a reseller or maybe you can order directly from them if you have a business. I have also seen adverts for the 110-503 from Grainger (most expensive - but still much less than a new water heater). You will need a 1/2" reducer bushing to use your same inlet fitting. The only other simple mod needed is to enlarge the hole for the inlet gas line so it will easily mate with the fitting in the 110-503. I did this with a rat tail file in about 5 minutes. Hope this helps.
Watched this video and others, nothing wrong with pilot, but it just would not light the gas coming out of the burner tube. So I took it apart only to find the burner tube was filled end to end with a spiders nest, long dead spiders nest.
Thanks for stepping me thru a job I am guessing I will do in next few years!
Thanks. Exactly what I needed to know. Have this exact challenge right now.
Great video, but you did say you were going to replace the drain valve as well, but you only showed that you took it out. That just happens to be the part of the video I needed, ugh. On with my search. lol
well you just put a wrench on it turn to the left get a new one turn to the right
Hi master that valve is the same one that wilderness RV 2005 use ???
hi... my old blue knob burnt yesterday but the unit still works.. do you know why it burned and do I need to worry about it?.. ty
Perfect exactly what I needed. Now it won’t stop running
I'm not a glove guy myself but you can tell that by looking at my hands. Wrenching in tight spaces like that even I would glove up.
Can you send me the Amazon site you purchased the gas valve, thanks Tommy
I need help I put the same valve and new thermocouple assembly it will not light at all
I need a water heater same like your but I don’t know where to get it .
Okay everything that you did in the video was done to my hot water tank but yet the pilot will run for a little while maybe even a day and then you can hear almost like air is getting to it and it'll go out. I have to keep relighting the pilot sometimes like every 2 to 3 hours and sometimes maybe every two to three days what do you think the problem can be?
why wouldnt ya of took the two screws out of the heat sheild and used a pipe wrench to take that valve out ?
Fixing to do this on 1985 Fleetwood...couldnt get pilot to light ..but wasn't holding it over so maybe ..wont have to..
Quick question regarding the old valve... the temp lever which way is hotter vs colder?
Left is hotter, right is cooler
My G6A-7 is doing something where both burner and pilot go out...if the door is shut...operated ok enough if the door is open.
Anyone here ever hear of this or have any ideas what would cause/fix this? Thanks.
Jim mine is doing the same thing! New parts and no change.
My Pilot light stays on. But it will not turn the big flame on when I turn it to on!?! How do I fix that? Thanks!
That should only turn on when your water drops below a certain temperature, the thermostat kicks on the gas and the pilot should light the burner to heat the water.
What about if pilot light only some times goes out when the main flame goes out. Almost like a main flame take out the pilot with it..m but not every time.
I have this problem. Here's the process: from a cold, off, setting turn on the pilot, wait a few for it to heat up the thermocouple. Switch the knob to "on" and away it goes for a few minutes. Then, it shuts off both the main burner and the pilot. Pilot will not stay lit until the whole thing cools down again.
I believe this means the high temperature sensor is malfunctioning. These have two sensors, I think. One for the set water temperature, and one for over temp. The over temp one kills the gas to both pilot and burner.
I think the only solution to replace the whole gas valve.
As of 7-15-24 this vendor on eBay has the Atwood gas vavles in stock (24 7 partsinc (40011).
Hope this helps some of y'all I know what a pain it is to try to find this gas valve.
Thanks for nice and useful video, I have ordered the thermocouple and pilot and replace them unfortunately still it didn’t work. So I have to replace the gas control valve but is out stock in Amazon I don’t know if there’s another equivalent I can replace with in Amazon, if anybody knows please send to me a link I will purchase one. Thanks
Camping world Valencia hat one left I just ordered one.
So I changed the gas valve and the pilot and thermocouple but it still shuts off after a few minutes and pilot goes out as well. Is my new gas valve bad ?
How did you fix your heater, mine is doing the same thing. All new parts with no change.

The smart way to fix it would be to fix the water leak first!
Can you find a link to replace the door please!!
Gas valve not in stock now
Great. Thanks
Most welcome
that valve is $200.00 on Amazon now !
Where did he get the replacement valve?
amzn.to/3ciE00j
I dont know if anyone els noticed but that "brand new thermocoupler looks like some one squished the tubing with needle nose pliers destroying it. I bet that gas valve was totally fine and he broke his own brand new thermo
Where can I find those parts?
There is a link in the description
Which pipe dope did you use?
Blue Magic is hands down the best
Not sure of the brand some PTFE pipe dope probably.
Anyone have a link to do the thermocouple?
Well amzn.to/39mG84Q is the part. just unloosen the thermocouple and gastube connection remove the screw holding the pilot tube . and it is out. install is the reverse very easy.
Did anyone get the link? I need this part as well?
amzn.to/3ciE00j
Mine wouldn't stay lit it was the circuit board
this Water heater Is older does not have a control board
It doesn't line up even in video it at angle and use proper tools they are brass and copper fittings
Worked just fine nothing cross threaded, And when you need it to work NOW you use what you got.
I wish you would have used a tripod for the camera.. too much unnecessary camera movements so I left at 5mins.
