- Most prospectors who use a metal detector in prospecting for gold want to know how to get the most out of their detector as far as depth and sensitivity. Every machine has its own adjustments and settings, but one of the most important ways to increase the capabilities of whatever detector you own is through the use of accessory coils. These accessory coils are important and allow the operator to alter the behavior of the detector to meet certain conditions in the field, better helping you to find those golden nuggets.

I know a newbie who wants to buy a detector and go find gold. I thought how do i tell him he has just picked the hardest thing to do with a detector. I reference your channel to him. I couldnt burst his bubble.

Chris & Kevin, I’d like to add, for your viewers that you didn’t mention the most important thing on coils and on tuning coils…

I have a .50 nugget in plastic medallion around my neck, that i use to tune in what ever coil I am using to the ground conditions I am in. The test nugget can be that either gold or lead. it is extremely important you adjust the detector sensitivity to max depth vs ground mineralization conditions you are in. It is important to know 100 % before you put that coil to the ground prospecting that everything is working as it should be before you start missing targets because the machine wasn’t set up properly after you change coils!!! Additionally it is extremely important to re-tune in the field in changing ground conditions during the day!!! and That advice is true on all metal detectors!!!!
I don’t leave home without my test nugget!

@Gerard Ange Excellent point about tuning detector to coil, do you tune till you just get the best audio output? This seems like an excellent idea for metal detecting in general which I think you mentioned. Thank you for the excellent information!
@@stinkasscat Yes, there are many types of hot rocks & bed rock… all affect different frequencies on your detector depending on which coil and the type of hot rocks and ground mineralization you are in… The results are always a compromise… but it is a controlled compromise!!! with the test nugget you can Dial it in for what Depth to expect and nulling out which type bedrock or hot rocks you are working in. to get your detector the best you can and adjust your peak Audio target response…
I do that on both PI and VLF machines… depending on the difficulty the ground conditions … that can change in 10 feet and you adjust to the changing ground conditions using the test nugget every time you need to re-adjust your settings & ground balance…
After doing that…. you know what to expect out of your machine when you get on the gold in new ground.
Words of Wisdom:
The Real important thing to remember is that Gold wears an Iron hat… in Hydrothermal deposition and in Placer Deposits accumulating with heavy metal magnetite Iron… All of that hides the Gold from your detector… plenty of gold gets missed because of these other highly reactive metals and minerals… if your Detector isn’t tuned to it’s peak…. you will miss lots of gold!!!
A test nugget is a good idea.

Howdy Chris and thanks for posting this interesting discussion with Kevin! Might either or both of you have any recommendations for accessory coils to go with my White's GMT vlf detector? It came with the White's standard Double D ellipse, which I have always believed to be a decent coil for this particular machine, but your discussion has perked my interest in other possibly useful alternatives for different conditions. I did note that Kevin specifically referenced his GMT from years past, but I didn't pick up on any specific recommendations. No real complaints with the coil that it carries, but it sounds like you fellows think that having some other options would be a very good thing!?!?
You know that White's electronics went out of business a couple years back, right? You might still find people who have used stuff, but new products are no longer on the market.
@@ChrisRalph Yep, I'm well aware of the sad demise of what was a premier detector company. However, I'm also aware that Garrett seems to have "bought" White's out and continues to produce a follow on of one of White's machines at least. Also, there does seem to be at least a minimum level of support that Garrett is offering, though I've never tried to find out what that might amount to. I have been in touch with Todd Marshall at Centerville Electronics NW who is still supporting White's detectors as a tech and repair center with some aftermarket products available. There are also other aftermarket sources for things like coils, though I suspect that the used market is going to be best for that and likely few aftermarket suppliers will be making coils designed with White's connectors as time passes.

I think there is a place for both coils and I use my larger coil more than the smaller one.

I have been hunting with the 6000 all week with the 11” mono and the 14” DD. I change to the DD when the mono won’t run in normal. I can then run the DD in normal. I am going over the same ground today with the 7000 with a 17 concentric. It’s highly mineralised soils and we are only finding gram to 0.1. This time tomorrow I will know if the concentric will give me any advantage.
You have a 6000 and a 7000?!!! Geez, how much gold do you find in order to afford those 2. That's more than $14K worth of MDs... without counting coils.

No. I hired the 6000 to see if I liked it.

hi Chris, we planing to hunt for meteorites on a dry lake, but last time we took 3 different vlf's to the area, it was super hard almost impossible to handle, what would u recommend for that kind of hunt? we are planing to bring a few PI minelabs, like 2200 SD, ithink also a explorer form minelab, but would DD coil b a good idea for this hunt? i remember using a square 6x6' coil in the area. but soil was wet and was hard to tell from deep real targets and mineral spots.
All dry lakes all over the world are not all the same - so no one detector works well everywhere. Don't know why you could not handle a VLF. They should work if they have a salt or beach mode. The problem is that salty ocean water and also salty dry lake water both conduct electricity. Your metal detector sees things that conduct electricity. Its sort of like trying to metal detect while standing on a sheet of iron. Much better to go in the dry season.

Is there a detector made for different minerals not just metal? Let's say for rocks, crystals, or resins? I'm curious about a detector for amber specifically.
No, the physics of what makes metal detectors work is that they see things that conduct electricity or have magnetic properties. There are not equivalent detectors for other minerals.
Can you fit a sniper coil on a pin-pointer with discriminator.
No, but I have seen people take a small size metal detector and put a very small coil on it and use it as a pinpointer.
Are there any gold prospecting people in the Atlantic Coast of Canada or USA that have experience with metal detecting. There is a large gold mine operation approx. 20kms on the westerly side of where I would like to prospect, there is another large gold mine on the easterly side of where I want to check out, approx. 10kms. In the middle, are large granite deposits, quartz is abundant. A fairly large creek runs between small mountain ridge's. Approx.300ft above sea level. I think there is gold in that area. My parent's decided one day , to get some panning gear, and pan a certain spot we found, they had zero panning experience and it was the only time they ever went there. They sent the rock samples of to Halifax , and gold was in the quartz rock. Like 6 small rocks. There is one location that is a huge granite wall or ridgeline, quartz seam in the side of it, a spring runs down the quartz seam, that is how we found it from under the ground and moss cover. They decided to pan at the bottom of this seam where the ridge meets the river below. 6 rocks and trace amounts of gold in all 6. On their 1st and only ever pan attempt. They are both passed since. But I was with my Dad when we noticed the quartz in the granite wall. Oyr ild hunting camp walking trail went along this granite ridge on a slow grade towards the brook. The hunting camp was built in 1957. I am now 58. I was a teenager when Dad and I noticed the seam, wondered about it, and things went from there. I worked all of my life while awake lol..until my mind stopped on me. So , I had zero time to prospect. Now I am on pension, I have lots of time, not the strength I used to have. Just have this feeling that I know there is gold there, and I just have to find it. I used to have re-occuring dream that our hunting land got turned into industiralized area, streets roads, sub divisions etc..I would wake up sweating , heart broken at what happened to our untouched land. Over the years, I felt like I would find a huge amount of gold, get rich, and destroy my hunting , camping land in the process. Then I think to myself, ( I know it would happen this way) but I think, I will find gold, and only take out small amounts of ore, enough to pay the bills, lol. But being human, I have both good and bad qualities. I would hate to destroy the land, but it does lure me tempt me to look...but maybe it would be better...just using it like we always have for generations of families have enjoyed this area for a long, long time. Its like a catch 22.

Basically what I wrote earlier is that I’ve been using a Nugget Finder Evolution and has great luck with it in a 17x13 size and a Sadie for small gold… was more detailed but too tired to retype it. 😉

I only have a gold monster 1000 and to the best of my knowledge there are Only 2 coils for this machine. So I take both with me.
Other machines offer other coils.
