As a Yankee I must say I found this song very entertaining! I've heard often how East-Germany would compare America to Rome and that is essentially why Hermann remained a great national hero there.

As a German (from the west) I have to say that this song is one of the most propagandistic pieces of art, I've ever seen in my life and I have watched "Der Führer's Face" by Disney. It's not catchy or anything else but it's funny that this was made by the GDR (DDR). In Germany we say: "Wer im Glashaus sitzt, sollte nicht mit Steinen werfen!" Do you seriously expect a political song, not to be propaganda? American or other anthems are no less of propaganda...except some anthems are so dull and dumb "Oh look our country has nice forests and moutains, and it's a dear land", that they're not. It's not because the song names directly someone [making it less vague, and more explicit], that it has less merit. Political songs, and marches are often more than anthems anyway. It's still relevant today. Gun makers are still here [while since 1929 an american general writing "War is a racket", said that weapon production should be nationalised, and not given to private company] , and Krupp is still making bloody money last in date is for example 11 workers dying at a plant operated by the company due to neglect... EU sends weapons, and who carries the weapon? While at the same time, they're still fueling war, with fuel? You don't have to be communist to find it relevant. It's good that a song be propaganda, what kind of content with a message do you hear from a pop catchy song? Some, but often none. You can check the current value of some gun making companies in the last months most of those have went up... I don't remember DDR making millions for its auctioneers over gun market.
