I'm an English patriot, and, honestly, I can't decide if I would side with King Charles or Oliver Cromwell if I lived in the 1640s, both have compelling arguments. I'm torn between my English nationalism and my Patriotic monarchism.

But when Cromwell frees nrealy half the prisoners on the fields of battle and then procedes to free the conscripted soldiers and only then ship off the volunteers, stupid enough to start a third war, theb he's suddely a "monster"
Truly, the Lord Protector was way too merciful to the murderers of Montrose's irishmen

England always was a republic by virtue of being a Parliamentary Monarchy.
Absolute Monarchy is despotic… Parliamentary Monarchy is a Monarchical republic as it fits the the pre-enlightenment definition of a republic and the early English translation of the Latin “res publica” is “commonwealth”, the old meaning of wealth being “well-being” so “commonwealth” is literally “common well-being”.
The Kingdom of England is a commonwealth i.e. a republic.

The irony is(I'm a military historian from Scotland,I drive my boyfriend nuts watching historical films)it probably costs MORE to do it inaccurately than it would to do it correctly!
Another thing that really annoys me as a gay working class man(I let folk say once they don't like homosexuality, that's free speech, twice is hassling me,I hit them,I would never call cops,I despise hate crime laws)is the amount of historical dramas with gay relationships in them, yes, the same proportion of men and women were gay in 1124 than in 2024,but they hid it.
Political correctness makes it look like every second person in the past was gay, plus in a historically based drama I don't want straight or gay relationships taking up half the programme.
