I've since put new CV shafts, have EBC brakes for it, poly sway bar bushings (fixes the front end clunk), new rear gate actuator, tint matched the front windows, TRD Pro 17's and BFG K02's. Next up is xreas delete and Bilstein 5100's to get it level in the front. Its been on 4 road trips this summer and runs/drives beautifully. No need to go into massive new car debt when you can just buy one of these.

What is it about V8s in the 4 liter areas that are so great? The Ford 4.6 2V, the Toyota 4.7 (and 4.8 too), etc. All the modern 5 liter area V8s are nowhere nears as good. Except the Toyota 5.7.
I've got a 2003 4runner v8 4 7l. It's got 300k. I bought it with 1 owner at 120k miles. I've done basic oil changes, brakes and new tires. No other issues.
To answer your question, "Is the V8 worth it?" I think that depends on the application. Of course if you have the exact same car for the same price sitting next to each other, one with the V8 and one with the V6... go with the V8. However, for offroading and your typical driver that isn't towing, you may be able to find a V6 cheaper in turn making it a "better car" because it works for that person. I don't think reliability is an issue between the two because they both have their flaws, and as long as you maintain them they will both last. Heck, even if you don't maintain them they will last longer than most vehicles. A lot of forums treat the V8 and the V6 like they're completely different cars and I think it all comes down to what you intend on doing with the vehicle. But I guess to a lot of people, More power = more better :)
They really are completely, utterly different cars. The V8 wuffles along at very low rpms and pulls extremely hard almost from idle. The cost different is negligible. A timing belt/water pump every 5 years (-$1k installed) is the only material cost difference; gas mileage is maybe 3% worse with the V8
Went with a v6 4.0 for one reason and that’s the timing chain versus a timing belt. Plus I don’t do any towing so the v6 is perfect for me. Love that dark grey color and it looks amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Bought my 06 4R Sport 4x4 V8 back in January of this year off the original owner too...108k on the clock and in beautiful condition with zero frame rot. I've never looked back once, such a fantastic vehicle especially with the V8.
I bought new in 1998 my Landcruiser with the same 4.7 litre engine .Just hit 97,000 miles and the engine still feels like new.It’s gotta be the greatest most reliable engine out there.Even with your 4Runner at 150,000 miles on it it’s not even broken in.Good luck with your truck.
We have an 03 4wd Limited V8 and it's an absolute beast of a car. It's been kept bone stock except that I had the entire frame sandblasted and sprayed with POR-15 a few years ago (expensive but totally worth it; there's not a speck of rust). Major services like the timing belt have been done at a dealer. Only used OEM parts no matter what. Have towed a 5000-lb sailboat all over Kingdom Come and you hardly even remember it's attached. It uses a lot of gas if you step on it; that's the only downside I can possibly think of. Why Toyota stopped putting V8s in is beyond me.
I wish they had this engine in the 2005+ Tacomas and new 4Runners. These 18/20mpg V6’s are not cutting it..so they might as well have made it a V8 to begin with.
I have and 03 4Runner Sport Edition 4x4 V8. Purchased it new. Now in 2020 I have only 79k miles on it! Only issue is that the dash pad has some cracks. I missed the recall on it and now it will be about $1400 to replace. Otherwise, a fantastic and reliable SUV that I plan to keep for a long time and do more road-trips!
Mine is the exact same as yours, just my exterior color is different. It’s called Shadow Mica. What I really like about the color is that it’s actually 3 colors, depends on the time of the day. At night it’s black, early morning/late evening or when the sun is not hitting it then it’s a dark grey. When the sun hits is then it’s green. I test drove the V6 and V8 same year, hands down the V8 full time 4wd. I bought mine 4 years ago with 96k miles, (now it’s at 188k miles🤭 you can tell how much I enjoy driving it haha)one owner clean history and the vehicle was clean inside and out, got it from CarMax so yes I over paid haha enjoy your new ride. I have had some issues with mine though over the past 3 years, but nothing really too major, just wear and tear

Very nice Toyota forerunner. Those vehicles are good on gas you got the small motor or the big motor you know how those gas prices are Japanese cars are the best change the oil and transmission fluid and take the car to the car wash super clean.
Had a 2011 GTI myself and sold it at 112k when it started having problems. Replaced it with an 05 4Runner V8 limited with 140k miles. Much more reliable and practical for my needs. I’ve driven my dads 07 V6 and it just feels less refined. Like the engine is working hard to move the big 4Runner. The V8 is absolutely the way to go.
little bit better then a jeep? lol nah try a million times better. That said yes it is worth it, I had an 04 4runner with 418k miles when I sold it and it ran like new. And that's not me talking it up, that's me saying it as I worked at a Toyota Dealership as both a Lot Tech and then a Service Tech, yeah I know from experience and there's a reason I bought it when it was in the 300k range. Furthermore at the time I owned it I installed home security systems for a living, I literally had that 4runner all over the country, and when installing between jobs was maybe 20 minute drives and usually 4 to 6 jobs a day aka she had a lot of run cycles. The motor is no joke and easily one of the best designed engines ever in my opinion. The argument is generally it has worse mileage, but if you do actual math it's usually 1 maybe 2 mpg's different, and you if you ever tow something the V8 is automatically the better choice, go offroad often, well there's usually some form of a hill climb so guess which one is better again. Always go with the V8 if you have a choice.
Love mine. Bought a 1-owner ‘03 V8 Limited 4wd with 108k for $8.1k. Had to do timing belt/water pump/plugs/RHS exhaust manifold, but now so so good! Added a hidden Bluetooth adapter to the OEM radio; now can do hands-free phone and stream audio. Super car!
Great car!!! I just bought a 2005 SR5 V8 with 78K original miles from original owner about a month ago...only thing is not a 4X4 . But nevertheless great for towing. Have fun in it guys.

Have the same T4R 2004 model silver. Love it. Now it has a 3” toytec lift and running 33’s. Stiffer then the x-reas if you like any kid of trail running it’s an awesome package
is the V8 worth it? The down side is you only get the awd drive train, the V6 actually has a little more hp but the V8 has way more low end torque. The 4.7 V8 is the longer lasting of the two engines with several being documented with a million miles. I have an 03 4runner V8 and it has been decent so far (210k) but I have a Jeep for off road adventures. Both have their place and I think the whole west side story type of Jeep vs Toyota gang fighting is ridiculous.
I totally agree with you, both Jeep and Toyota have their strong suits. I'm doing another video soon that goes into more detail about the 2uz engine. But yeah, it's one hell of a machine. It needs more maintenance than the 4.0, but will last longer in the long run. You're totally right, the early 4.7's had lower hp figures than their 4.0 counterparts, but this one has the VVTI, so it makes 271hp, versus the 236hp from the 4.0 of that year. I will be in the market in the next 3 months for 2005 to 2010 Toyota 4Runner or Lexus GX 470. I do like the 4Runner with V8 engine however if its V8 I am more inclined towards the GX470 .

I never buy a car in the rain or at night😹. That being said, I just bought an ‘07 limited v8 with 255,000, without driving it first. It is absolutely perfect. Underneath looks absolutely stunning. Thoroughly maintained. Drives as new. And only $6,000+ 1000 for new tires. Might sell my FJ now. Enjoy!

I bought my 2006 4Runner V8 limited in 2013 with 94,000 miles. It’s never left me stranded. The only thing I have done is 2 timing belts Which is routine. the alternator failed at 223,000 miles $130. to replace I installed the 2nd timing belt and the alternator. The next complex thing with be replacing the starter because of the awkward location The sunroof will leak in a car wash or a heavy rain. It still drives like new. I have confidence in driving it Anywhere. It now has 224,000 miles Great vehicle.
Look up how to clean the corner drain tubes. The pan around is suppose to catch the water and drain it down. Granted, the rubber seal does dry out and let more water in then was new.
Agree with this. The post-‘06 ones do have VVT and better headlights though, which I kind of envy. Still, I like the fender lines much better on the pre-facelift ones … looks so much tougher than the later ones!
I had a 2008 2WD V8 but didn’t like the faulty secondary injection issues that rear their ugly head. Sold it and bought a one owner 2004 V8 4WD. No secondary air injection! Granted these need wheel bearings, front calipers seize in some cases, but other than that they are TANKS! Change that transmission fluid with WS only! Don’t listen to the non OEM folks. I work on alot of these. They will last forever if minimally maintained. Nice truck!
I really love the V8 4Runners, but I also love my Grand Cherokee and fortunately I can still get one with a [big] V8. SUVs with V8 engines are definitely my cup of tea, especially with full-time 4WD.
Most people selling these older 4Runners now in the Midwest are lying about Frame Rot. DO NOT BUY an older 4Runner in the Midwest without having it inspected. Even Dealers are just Undercoating them and hiding the Rust.
My first car is a v8 2003 4Runner with 136k mi. no rust but the previous owner was a smoker and heroin addict so I have cigarette burn marks everywhere, a cracked dash, dirty headliner, and some broken interior plastics. The dealership I got it from did an atrocious job with the paint like overspray hit the under carriage and roof rack. I got it for 11k. I have never had any issues drivetrain wise. The only things I upgraded was putting a remote start on it, an apple carplay head unit, bigger tires, and just normal maintenance like wipers and replaced a light. But as a 16 yo I cannot complain that I got an 03 with only 136k mi. and only have cosmetic issues.
You're crazy about the V8 and V6 is twice the motors then V8 and the V8 has a belt for a timing chain a V6 has a chain for a timing chain we have 235,000 no problem and I guarantee I got just as much power as you do in the V8 but I get better gas mileage
Gas consumption is negligible, you're still going to spend a lot, why not go V8? If your not getting a v8 with 4wd, you might as well be getting another car, that's the point of the 4runner in my opinion. Rav 4 would be a good option for those people. If you go v6 on a 4runner you take all the cons with almost non of the benefits of this big beautiful monstrosity.
V8s are so overpriced in many markets. Bought a 2004 V6 Sport 186k miles for $5,000. I don't tow and not much off-roading in NJ/NYC.....V8s going for double.

Okay, so I just bought a 2006 Sport with the V6 and am quickly falling in love (like Sam in this vid altho 4wd on sloppy roads is a bit pants-wetting for now.) It was a Georgia car originally, then mountain West -- so frame rust is mild. But it also came with 20" rims (!) And the tubular, weight-distributing hitch. Which is much rustier than the ladder frame. Salvage yard bolt-on? Also, what is the limiting factor in the tow capacity: hitch, engine, or suspension? Tranny is the same, right?
You should check out the four-wheel drive does it work I do know you going to have a lot of problems with the tailgate open and shut when you do holler at me I'll tell you how to fix it
Have an "04 myself and love it coming out of a Lexus. Little more cash and check out the Lexus GX470. Be sure to check 4wd Lo and lockers. They are seized many times from suburban drivers!
i end up getting a 2005 sport with the V8 2wd white with gray cloth interior it has 163k currently. i am the 3rd owner. the 1st owner took it to the dealership for everything.the second changed the oil every 4k. its a Texas truck all of its life so rust is minimal. the carfax report was excellent. i just put some all terrains on it a maganflow muffler and i had to put a new alternator in it. other than that its been awesome.
I disagree... TB, WP and Starter can all be replaced at the same time. TB/WP every 90K... Starter can be done at 180K if need be. In the long run, that’s minimal maintenance that will make sure your rig will last longer. I’d rather do that every 6-8 years, than pay for a totally new/used car?
@@greenbanana2332 on the 1uz to replace the starter you have to take out the intake manifold and timing belts are never easy, I know somebody that sold his 9 year old land cruiser because of the starter job.
1 internetraveller : 4.7 V8 is 2UZ... Starter accessible at same time if replacing TB. Starters rarely fail in this gen of 4Runners, but if you’re following maint sched, just do it at 180K while in there.
@@greenbanana2332 My friend told about the starter job and I remember Scotty saying the same also, the thing is that nothing lasts forever and these Toyota V8 engines although solid, very solid are expensive to maintain when they get old, even Scotty said that a few times, pretty sure you had a different experience. My friend is a mechanic by the way, he just didn't want to bother with the starter and the timing belt, not to mention that the transmission was "clunking", it was a long time ago and he also wanted a Corolla.

This is a west coast, rust free, clean interior car. Has some minor dings. They had it listed for $12k originally

I am also trying to get a utility patent for the remanufacturing process of the steering rack that I just invented and the first prototype is on my car right now. My steering rack will give you a much smoother, more precise steering feel. You also get to have zero morning sickness on a cold morning start and U-turns and turning radius are both greatly improved...my V8 4Runner is now making U-turns like a tiny little Honda Civic compact car with my soon to be patent-pending steering rack. Not exaggerating. Mine beats the oem dealer part in every category.

My poor 4runner had to sit for a year, and i am finally able to get it going. Bought a new battery, went to turn the key but it WONT TURN!!!. any advice? I think she's pissed off at me for letting her sit so long.
Sorry to hear about that! Sounds like a seized starter. Try locating the starter and whacking it with a hammer or a pry bar. Sometimes that can free it up, but you’ll probably need to change the starter soon

Note that there are a couple of issues with the 6 - corroded and cracked exhaust manifold and failed head gaskets - both $$$$

The motor is no joke and easily one of the best designed engines ever in my opinion.
The argument is generally it has worse mileage, but if you do actual math it's usually 1 maybe 2 mpg's different, and you if you ever tow something the V8 is automatically the better choice, go offroad often, well there's usually some form of a hill climb so guess which one is better again.
Always go with the V8 if you have a choice.

Love mine. Bought a 1-owner ‘03 V8 Limited 4wd with 108k for $8.1k. Had to do timing belt/water pump/plugs/RHS exhaust manifold, but now so so good! Added a hidden Bluetooth adapter to the OEM radio; now can do hands-free phone and stream audio. Super car!
What Bluetooth adapter did you use? I just got an 05 and was hoping I could find something similar.
Great car!!! I just bought a 2005 SR5 V8 with 78K original miles from original owner about a month ago...only thing is not a 4X4 . But nevertheless great for towing. Have fun in it guys.

Have the same T4R 2004 model silver. Love it. Now it has a 3” toytec lift and running 33’s. Stiffer then the x-reas if you like any kid of trail running it’s an awesome package

is the V8 worth it? The down side is you only get the awd drive train, the V6 actually has a little more hp but the V8 has way more low end torque. The 4.7 V8 is the longer lasting of the two engines with several being documented with a million miles. I have an 03 4runner V8 and it has been decent so far (210k) but I have a Jeep for off road adventures. Both have their place and I think the whole west side story type of Jeep vs Toyota gang fighting is ridiculous.
I totally agree with you, both Jeep and Toyota have their strong suits. I'm doing another video soon that goes into more detail about the 2uz engine. But yeah, it's one hell of a machine. It needs more maintenance than the 4.0, but will last longer in the long run. You're totally right, the early 4.7's had lower hp figures than their 4.0 counterparts, but this one has the VVTI, so it makes 271hp, versus the 236hp from the 4.0 of that year. I will be in the market in the next 3 months for 2005 to 2010 Toyota 4Runner or Lexus GX 470. I do like the 4Runner with V8 engine however if its V8 I am more inclined towards the GX470 .

Thoroughly maintained. Drives as new. And only $6,000+ 1000 for new tires. Might sell my FJ now. Enjoy!

I bought my 2006 4Runner V8 limited in 2013 with 94,000 miles. It’s never left me stranded.
The only thing I have done is 2 timing belts Which is routine. the alternator failed at 223,000 miles $130. to replace I installed the 2nd timing belt and the alternator. The next complex thing with be replacing the starter because of the awkward location The sunroof will leak in a car wash or a heavy rain. It still drives like new. I have confidence in driving it Anywhere. It now has 224,000 miles Great vehicle.
Look up how to clean the corner drain tubes. The pan around is suppose to catch the water and drain it down. Granted, the rubber seal does dry out and let more water in then was new.

The 2003 4th gen V8 was the best 4th gen model. Last and only model to have a transmission dipstick.

Agree with this. The post-‘06 ones do have VVT and better headlights though, which I kind of envy. Still, I like the fender lines much better on the pre-facelift ones … looks so much tougher than the later ones!

I had a 2008 2WD V8 but didn’t like the faulty secondary injection issues that rear their ugly head. Sold it and bought a one owner 2004 V8 4WD. No secondary air injection! Granted these need wheel bearings, front calipers seize in some cases, but other than that they are TANKS! Change that transmission fluid with WS only! Don’t listen to the non OEM folks. I work on alot of these. They will last forever if minimally maintained. Nice truck!
I really love the V8 4Runners, but I also love my Grand Cherokee and fortunately I can still get one with a [big] V8. SUVs with V8 engines are definitely my cup of tea, especially with full-time 4WD.
Most people selling these older 4Runners now in the Midwest are lying about Frame Rot. DO NOT BUY an older 4Runner in the Midwest without having it inspected. Even Dealers are just Undercoating them and hiding the Rust.
My first car is a v8 2003 4Runner with 136k mi. no rust but the previous owner was a smoker and heroin addict so I have cigarette burn marks everywhere, a cracked dash, dirty headliner, and some broken interior plastics. The dealership I got it from did an atrocious job with the paint like overspray hit the under carriage and roof rack. I got it for 11k. I have never had any issues drivetrain wise. The only things I upgraded was putting a remote start on it, an apple carplay head unit, bigger tires, and just normal maintenance like wipers and replaced a light. But as a 16 yo I cannot complain that I got an 03 with only 136k mi. and only have cosmetic issues.
You're crazy about the V8 and V6 is twice the motors then V8 and the V8 has a belt for a timing chain a V6 has a chain for a timing chain we have 235,000 no problem and I guarantee I got just as much power as you do in the V8 but I get better gas mileage
Gas consumption is negligible, you're still going to spend a lot, why not go V8? If your not getting a v8 with 4wd, you might as well be getting another car, that's the point of the 4runner in my opinion. Rav 4 would be a good option for those people. If you go v6 on a 4runner you take all the cons with almost non of the benefits of this big beautiful monstrosity.
V8s are so overpriced in many markets. Bought a 2004 V6 Sport 186k miles for $5,000. I don't tow and not much off-roading in NJ/NYC.....V8s going for double.
4th Gen V8 is NOT full time “4wd”. It’s full time all wheel drive. There is a HUGE ASS difference. I own one myself with 232,000 miles.

Okay, so I just bought a 2006 Sport with the V6 and am quickly falling in love (like Sam in this vid altho 4wd on sloppy roads is a bit pants-wetting for now.) It was a Georgia car originally, then mountain West -- so frame rust is mild. But it also came with 20" rims (!) And the tubular, weight-distributing hitch. Which is much rustier than the ladder frame. Salvage yard bolt-on? Also, what is the limiting factor in the tow capacity: hitch, engine, or suspension? Tranny is the same, right?

You should check out the four-wheel drive does it work I do know you going to have a lot of problems with the tailgate open and shut when you do holler at me I'll tell you how to fix it
Have an "04 myself and love it coming out of a Lexus. Little more cash and check out the Lexus GX470. Be sure to check 4wd Lo and lockers. They are seized many times from suburban drivers!
i end up getting a 2005 sport with the V8 2wd white with gray cloth interior it has 163k currently. i am the 3rd owner. the 1st owner took it to the dealership for everything.the second changed the oil every 4k. its a Texas truck all of its life so rust is minimal. the carfax report was excellent. i just put some all terrains on it a maganflow muffler and i had to put a new alternator in it. other than that its been awesome.

It has a timing belt and a very hard to replace starter so it's not worth it.
I disagree... TB, WP and Starter can all be replaced at the same time. TB/WP every 90K... Starter can be done at 180K if need be. In the long run, that’s minimal maintenance that will make sure your rig will last longer. I’d rather do that every 6-8 years, than pay for a totally new/used car?
@@greenbanana2332 on the 1uz to replace the starter you have to take out the intake manifold and timing belts are never easy, I know somebody that sold his 9 year old land cruiser because of the starter job.
1 internetraveller : 4.7 V8 is 2UZ... Starter accessible at same time if replacing TB. Starters rarely fail in this gen of 4Runners, but if you’re following maint sched, just do it at 180K while in there.
@@greenbanana2332 My friend told about the starter job and I remember Scotty saying the same also, the thing is that nothing lasts forever and these Toyota V8 engines although solid, very solid are expensive to maintain when they get old, even Scotty said that a few times, pretty sure you had a different experience.
My friend is a mechanic by the way, he just didn't want to bother with the starter and the timing belt, not to mention that the transmission was "clunking", it was a long time ago and he also wanted a Corolla.

I think that’s too much money, especially for a 2wd. Tires and timing belt are going to be a chunk of change, too.
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy well the timing belt isn't going to cost me anything...I'm a Toyota master tech and have all of the parts on hand already. The tires I was going to change them out anyway. This is a west coast, rust free, clean interior car. Has some minor dings. They had it listed for $12k originally

I am also trying to get a utility patent for the remanufacturing process of the steering rack that I just invented and the first prototype is on my car right now. My steering rack will give you a much smoother, more precise steering feel. You also get to have zero morning sickness on a cold morning start and U-turns and turning radius are both greatly improved...my V8 4Runner is now making U-turns like a tiny little Honda Civic compact car with my soon to be patent-pending steering rack. Not exaggerating. Mine beats the oem dealer part in every category.

My poor 4runner had to sit for a year, and i am finally able to get it going. Bought a new battery, went to turn the key but it WONT TURN!!!. any advice? I think she's pissed off at me for letting her sit so long.
Sorry to hear about that! Sounds like a seized starter. Try locating the starter and whacking it with a hammer or a pry bar. Sometimes that can free it up, but you’ll probably need to change the starter soon
Check your oil make sure it's above the add line also make sure it's in park.
@Eric Jay: You’ve got a lot more going on. Do a complete check? Plenty YT vids out there regarding idle/stored cars. Take the time and research. You will be happy you did. Good luck!
