The abridged probably isn’t going to cover it since a lot of this knowledge is like original dragon ball before z came out but Goku was raised by the first Gohan before he died who tried taking care of him but he had trouble because Goku had his sayian instinct making him a brat until Gohan accidentally dropped him making him forget his mission.
The sore throaty voice from Frieza in the beginning, is possibly a reference to Frieza’s original Funimation voice actor, Linda Young. Linda was the first voice from Frieza I’ve heard, since I started watching DBZ back in 2009. Her version of Frieza had a pretty raspy voice (especially with Final Form Frieza), but nonetheless I thought she was a pretty great Frieza.
Jack, it's generally agreed on by the community that this anime special used to be canon until Toriyama released Dragon Ball Minus, which came out in 2014 and contradicts plot points from this special. Some fans argue it never was canon because Toriyama had little involvement with it beyond providing character designs, however Toriyama was on record at the time this came out saying he loved the special, and the man even went as far as to redraw a scene from it as a flashback in the original Dragon Ball manga, which is why I think it's fair to assume it's something that used to be canon in Toriyama's eyes.
Also to note the scene where Bardock fights Dodorias men and his final attempt at Frieza is still canon. We see Bardock throw the blast in DBS Broly. Toyotaro released a sketch showing Bardocks crew dying and Barodck finding out.

Jack, just to clear this out: This special WAS canon at one point. But then, Toriyama introduced a manga called: “Dragon Ball Minus” which retold Goku's origins. The origins remain largely the same, except Bardock never fought Frieza at the atmosphere of the planet, and Goku's mother was introduced in that manga. In the Dragon Ball Super Broly movie, the film's prologue is the plot of Minus, which officially makes this special non-canon, and also makes Broly officially canon within the main Dragon Ball timeline.

No, the special was never canon, Toriyama watched it and really liked it and took a few things from it, Bardock the character, and the event where he confronts Freeza near his ship in the end. Bardock appears very briefly in the manga after the special aired, but none of the events of the special are confirmed, but he has the same appearance as he does in the special, Freeza remarks how goku looks like this saiyan from the past that confronted him. The bardock death scene of the tv special is then used in the very start of DB Kai which was meant to be closer to the manga, then only in DB minus / DBS broly we get the canon version of the events and a retconned Bardock design. But most likely Bardock's death was the same sequence of events as the special, except for the vision of the future.
They basically explained a lot of the things he’s confused about in the first episode of DBZA. Raddits is Goku‘s brother. Goku hit his head when he was a kid, that was why he didn’t destroy the earth like all Saiyan children are supposed to do when they’re sent to a planet. The full moon shows up they turn into a giant monkey and wreck the place. (Just as a heads up in case he reads this.) None of the movies are considered canon.

We can just assume that Raditz believed Goku was sent to Earth to conquer it, but that was in fact a misconception in his own head. Bardock and this special were the complete creation of Toei animation and Toriyama was really impressed by the story so when Goku meets Frieza, he flashes back to this confrontation between him and Bardock, all as a shout-out to the special. The latest movie also recanonised a lot of this special like how Bardock does a last stand against Frieza while making him a bit less of a dick, enough to sympathize. Why Goku got sent to Earth is given a new secret meaning besides going to conquer it.

I think he's doing it to try to not miss things while reading/responding to chat, but the way he's constantly stopping mid-dialogue makes him miss stuff anyway. It also ruins the pacing. I wish he'd go back to doing these off-stream again. Or, if he's going to stream, at least commit to minimizing chat until after the episode is over. I get that live engagement is important for streamers trying to grow and maintain a viewership, but in this context it really doesn't work well.
You really need to be familiar with the franchise as a whole to get the most out of Dragon Ball Z Abridged as you can see by a lot things flying over Jack's head
Bardock's TV specials were never canon to Dragon Ball, so while Bardock's existence as Goku's father was canon, there was literally nothing to his character beyond looking like Goku and the knowledge that he was Goku's father. But recently, Akira Toriyama did the same thing for Bardock that he did for Broly by creating a canon version of him, as well as Goku's mom, who's name is Gine. Only problem is that people like the non-canon TV special Bardock more than the canon one we've been seeing in other places recently. Edit: Wow, I never thought of that, but you're right. Grandpa Gohan did save the world. By dropping his infant grandson down a cliff.
Bardock was incorporated into the manga, post TV special, as Toriyama adored it even though he had no part in it. A special panel is given showing Bardock from the special as a result, leading to people accepting it into continuity. Later on, Toriyama would go onto write his own entirely different story for Bardock in a special story titled “Dragon Ball Minus” which has since been adapted into dragon ball super.
While I do like DBS Bardock, nothing beats the original badass Bardock. The Saiyans being so merciless and cruel only served to make Goku even better. Made him look like one in billions. Also just so you know, this is non-canon now. It used to be canon but Toriyama retconned it by changing Bardock's story in 2014, which is a much less popular version btw.

When Frieza sees Goku he thought of that Sayian who fought iuntil the end. I believe (correct me people if i´m wrong) tt Bardock didn´t die against Freiza. Freiza´s attack caused a wormhole and Bardock travelled back in time. He then fought and defeated Chilled (Freiza´s ancestor) turning Super Saiyan. Chilled was found by his men and talked about a Super Saiyan before dying. And that is how the Super Saiyan legend was born. To sum up, Bardock was the first super Saiyan ever

To give some clarity on the whole canon not canon thing. In the manga we don't learn much about Bardock we are just shown in two panels that he died trying to make some sort of final stand against Freeza. When the anime aired they used this as an opportunity to expand on that which is what lead to this special and for the longest time this was considered canon. However years later Akira Toriyama would make a short story called Dragon Ball minus which re-tells the story of Bardock and how Goku was sent to Earth. And it's not just the whole thing with Bardock the OG anime added alot of stuff that wasn't in the manga so it's really debatable just how much of is canon.
The special was never considered canon since none of it was made or agree on by Toriyama. They took the two canon panels we have seen in the manga and made a story around those, but nothing except those panels was canon.
Toei just stole Toriyama's thunder since they never thought Toriyama would bother with a storyline set before Dragon Ball. The special came out first and Toriyama liked the finished special enough to include it in flashback panels. The manga was originally released in a weekly manga magazine along with other properties before enough chapters get released to make up its very own book. This means the magazine version is the absolute earliest a chapter can be released to the public. The chapter Bardock was shown in was published on January 5, 1991. The Bardock special came out first on October 17, 1990 - an 80-day difference.

Simplest answer. Bardock special wasn't canon. Eventually, Toriyama made Bardock and Goku's mother Gine("Gi-ney") canon in Super, relatively recently. Though, Bardock was retconned, and made a lot more chill
So long as you're on this journey, it might be worth reacting to the old Dragonball anime. It's not too common for channels to do reactions to it, and it's old enough that they might be less strict with copyright strikes. Not to mention, I think that the majority of it is better than the Cell and Buu sagas, though that is just my personal subjective opinion.

Here’s the story with Bardock being cannon. This tv special aired during the Ginyu force fights in Japan. Toei made the special with some involvement from Akita Toriyama (Dragon ball’s creator). Toriyama must of liked the Bardock special because in the manga when Goku appears to fight Frieza he wrote that Frieza is reminded of Bardock when looking at Goku. Then after Dragon ball ended Toriyama made Jaco the Galactic Patrol Man which was later revealed to be a Dragon Ball prequel spin off type thing. Once that ended and was released as a complete set there was a bonus chapter Dragon Ball Minus which retconned Bardock’s story. People debated whether Minus was cannon or not until Dragon Ball Super Broly Confirmed Minus is cannon.
The TFS DBcember countdowns would be a great watch. Entertaining and you'd learn a lot of Dragonball that isn't covered in the games or in the abridged series.

I remember the first time I saw this special was during the original run on toonami, and this came out in between the namek saga and freeza saga (technically arcs but they flipped them for dragon ball)

What about the fact that Raditz straight up told goku that they are brothers in the first episode, or that goku mentioned his brother, Raditz, to King Yamma shortly after dying? Only makes him not realizing this look all the worse for him.
Bardock was canon because Toriyama watched the special and really liked it, but while the character was canon, the events of the special never were. Toriyama wouldn't make his version of the events until DBS broly. Bardock's appearance was indeed retconned though because he did show up in like one panel in the manga and his design was the same as in the tv special then.
At the end of the video I was internally screaming at him to look at the clips playing. He missed all the og dragon ball clips that were put in the end credits.

Those few episodes he recorded off-stream towards the end of the Frieza saga were so much more entertaining because they had his full attention and engagement. Having it go back to 40% watching, 60% reading, responding and talking to chat is kind of disappointing.
The plot itself in GT is actually not that bad it's the execution of the plot that went horribly wrong. I liked that it was focused on the dragon balls and I liked how it ended but most of the enemies aren't that good. If they would make a GT remake and change a few things: For exemple: Goku wouldn't stay a kid for the entire anime. He would turn back after about 20 episodes and make the dragons have actual good reason to go against humans and not just because Oolong wishes for panties one time (Yes this was the reason why 1 of the dragons wanted to kill the humans). It would be good if SSJ4 somehow became canon in super. Maybe Gohan or the 2 kids could discover it somehow and it would give them a chance to be on higher level.

Quick summery of canon material: The Bardock special came out during the Ginyu saga as a special, since it came out around 30 years ago, the Broly movie came out. The Bardock special has been altered slightly (between it and the the current running DBS manga) so it’s heavily debated if it’s considered canon. The abridged probably isn’t going to cover it since a lot of this knowledge is like original dragon ball before z came out but Goku was raised by the first Gohan before he died who tried taking care of him but he had trouble because Goku had his sayian instinct making him a brat until Gohan accidentally dropped him making him forget his mission.

The sore throaty voice from Frieza in the beginning, is possibly a reference to Frieza’s original Funimation voice actor, Linda Young. Linda was the first voice from Frieza I’ve heard, since I started watching DBZ back in 2009. Her version of Frieza had a pretty raspy voice (especially with Final Form Frieza), but nonetheless I thought she was a pretty great Frieza.

Jack, it's generally agreed on by the community that this anime special used to be canon until Toriyama released Dragon Ball Minus, which came out in 2014 and contradicts plot points from this special. Some fans argue it never was canon because Toriyama had little involvement with it beyond providing character designs, however Toriyama was on record at the time this came out saying he loved the special, and the man even went as far as to redraw a scene from it as a flashback in the original Dragon Ball manga, which is why I think it's fair to assume it's something that used to be canon in Toriyama's eyes.
Also to note the scene where Bardock fights Dodorias men and his final attempt at Frieza is still canon. We see Bardock throw the blast in DBS Broly. Toyotaro released a sketch showing Bardocks crew dying and Barodck finding out.

Jack, just to clear this out: This special WAS canon at one point. But then, Toriyama introduced a manga called: “Dragon Ball Minus” which retold Goku's origins.
The origins remain largely the same, except Bardock never fought Frieza at the atmosphere of the planet, and Goku's mother was introduced in that manga. In the Dragon Ball Super Broly movie, the film's prologue is the plot of Minus, which officially makes this special non-canon, and also makes Broly officially canon within the main Dragon Ball timeline.

No, the special was never canon, Toriyama watched it and really liked it and took a few things from it, Bardock the character, and the event where he confronts Freeza near his ship in the end. Bardock appears very briefly in the manga after the special aired, but none of the events of the special are confirmed, but he has the same appearance as he does in the special, Freeza remarks how goku looks like this saiyan from the past that confronted him.
The bardock death scene of the tv special is then used in the very start of DB Kai which was meant to be closer to the manga, then only in DB minus / DBS broly we get the canon version of the events and a retconned Bardock design. But most likely Bardock's death was the same sequence of events as the special, except for the vision of the future.
They basically explained a lot of the things he’s confused about in the first episode of DBZA.

We can just assume that Raditz believed Goku was sent to Earth to conquer it, but that was in fact a misconception in his own head. The latest movie also recanonised a lot of this special like how Bardock does a last stand against Frieza while making him a bit less of a dick, enough to sympathize. Why Goku got sent to Earth is given a new secret meaning besides going to conquer it.

You really need to be familiar with the franchise as a whole to get the most out of Dragon Ball Z Abridged as you can see by a lot things flying over Jack's head
Bardock's TV specials were never canon to Dragon Ball, so while Bardock's existence as Goku's father was canon, there was literally nothing to his character beyond looking like Goku and the knowledge that he was Goku's father. But recently, Akira Toriyama did the same thing for Bardock that he did for Broly by creating a canon version of him, as well as Goku's mom, who's name is Gine. Only problem is that people like the non-canon TV special Bardock more than the canon one we've been seeing in other places recently.
Edit: Wow, I never thought of that, but you're right. Grandpa Gohan did save the world. By dropping his infant grandson down a cliff.
Pretty sure the Episode of Bardock where he goes Super Saiyan is cannon tho. His past was retconned by the Super Broly movie
Bardock was incorporated into the manga, post TV special, as Toriyama adored it even though he had no part in it. A special panel is given showing Bardock from the special as a result, leading to people accepting it into continuity. Later on, Toriyama would go onto write his own entirely different story for Bardock in a special story titled “Dragon Ball Minus” which has since been adapted into dragon ball super.

While I do like DBS Bardock, nothing beats the original badass Bardock. The Saiyans being so merciless and cruel only served to make Goku even better. Made him look like one in billions.
Also just so you know, this is non-canon now. It used to be canon but Toriyama retconned it by changing Bardock's story in 2014, which is a much less popular version btw.

I believe (correct me people if i´m wrong) tt Bardock didn´t die against Freiza. Freiza´s attack caused a wormhole and Bardock travelled back in time.
He then fought and defeated Chilled (Freiza´s ancestor) turning Super Saiyan. Chilled was found by his men and talked about a Super Saiyan before dying.
And that is how the Super Saiyan legend was born.

To give some clarity on the whole canon not canon thing. In the manga we don't learn much about Bardock we are just shown in two panels that he died trying to make some sort of final stand against Freeza. When the anime aired they used this as an opportunity to expand on that which is what lead to this special and for the longest time this was considered canon. However years later Akira Toriyama would make a short story called Dragon Ball minus which re-tells the story of Bardock and how Goku was sent to Earth. And it's not just the whole thing with Bardock the OG anime added alot of stuff that wasn't in the manga so it's really debatable just how much of is canon.
The special was never considered canon since none of it was made or agree on by Toriyama. They took the two canon panels we have seen in the manga and made a story around those, but nothing except those panels was canon.

Toei just stole Toriyama's thunder since they never thought Toriyama would bother with a storyline set before Dragon Ball. The special came out first and Toriyama liked the finished special enough to include it in flashback panels.
The manga was originally released in a weekly manga magazine along with other properties before enough chapters get released to make up its very own book. This means the magazine version is the absolute earliest a chapter can be released to the public. The chapter Bardock was shown in was published on January 5, 1991. The Bardock special came out first on October 17, 1990 - an 80-day difference.

Simplest answer. Bardock special wasn't canon. Eventually, Toriyama made Bardock and Goku's mother Gine("Gi-ney") canon in Super, relatively recently. Though, Bardock was retconned, and made a lot more chill
So long as you're on this journey, it might be worth reacting to the old Dragonball anime. It's not too common for channels to do reactions to it, and it's old enough that they might be less strict with copyright strikes. Not to mention, I think that the majority of it is better than the Cell and Buu sagas, though that is just my personal subjective opinion.

Here’s the story with Bardock being cannon. This tv special aired during the Ginyu force fights in Japan. Toei made the special with some involvement from Akita Toriyama (Dragon ball’s creator). Toriyama must of liked the Bardock special because in the manga when Goku appears to fight Frieza he wrote that Frieza is reminded of Bardock when looking at Goku. Then after Dragon ball ended Toriyama made Jaco the Galactic Patrol Man which was later revealed to be a Dragon Ball prequel spin off type thing. Once that ended and was released as a complete set there was a bonus chapter Dragon Ball Minus which retconned Bardock’s story. People debated whether Minus was cannon or not until Dragon Ball Super Broly Confirmed Minus is cannon.

I remember the first time I saw this special was during the original run on toonami, and this came out in between the namek saga and freeza saga (technically arcs but they flipped them for dragon ball)

Bardock was canon because Toriyama watched the special and really liked it, but while the character was canon, the events of the special never were. Toriyama wouldn't make his version of the events until DBS broly. Bardock's appearance was indeed retconned though because he did show up in like one panel in the manga and his design was the same as in the tv special then.
At the end of the video I was internally screaming at him to look at the clips playing. He missed all the og dragon ball clips that were put in the end credits.

Yeah cause once you get to super then they completely screw up the ending of dbz by having Pan being born already cause she was 3 in the last episode and goten and trunks were teenagers but then in super she's born and trunks and goten are only like 9 and 8 I think

Those few episodes he recorded off-stream towards the end of the Frieza saga were so much more entertaining because they had his full attention and engagement. Having it go back to 40% watching, 60% reading, responding and talking to chat is kind of disappointing.

not huge GT fan but people being like Super doesn't have any cringe scenes or cringe episodes
The plot itself in GT is actually not that bad it's the execution of the plot that went horribly wrong. I liked that it was focused on the dragon balls and I liked how it ended but most of the enemies aren't that good. If they would make a GT remake and change a few things: For exemple: Goku wouldn't stay a kid for the entire anime. He would turn back after about 20 episodes and make the dragons have actual good reason to go against humans and not just because Oolong wishes for panties one time (Yes this was the reason why 1 of the dragons wanted to kill the humans).
It would be good if SSJ4 somehow became canon in super. Maybe Gohan or the 2 kids could discover it somehow and it would give them a chance to be on higher level.

The Bardock special came out during the Ginyu saga as a special, since it came out around 30 years ago, the Broly movie came out. The Bardock special has been altered slightly (between it and the the current running DBS manga) so it’s heavily debated if it’s considered canon.
