What a great video on a use if the RGB mixer. And yes, it's true that it doesn't get enough love. I have seen in the past youTubers using the RGB mixer and pushing the levels of each up to 2.00 to turn up saturation, it should be pointed out that this does increase the saturation, but using it that way is no different than just increasing the saturation i n the primary tools from 50 to 100. But this technique of borrowing from the green to push the trace over, is brilliant and something that I have seen done before, but completely forgot about. I think fixing bad footage is an art. And I bet it is of great interest to filmmakers starting to do their own color grades. Especially in the documentary type films where there is virtually no set up time or gear, and worse no "retaking" of the footage. I really enjoyed this one Darren. Nice job.
Thanks Jim, appreciated. Yes I was amazed so little info on the RGB mixer out there. Of course agree sat would be done elsewhere as easier - I was merely proving a point here. As with my other nodes - not my normal node tree but it just seemed a shame to leave it there - I almost couldn't help myself but to correct the shot further and thought would be nice for those who stuck around longer than 5 minutes to see!! Good to be back - it's been. few weeks since I did an episode and intend to get a few out soon now and get back on it. Appreciate your comments as always!! Thanks, Darren.
I personally liked the extra bit at the end. It helps drive home that you were able to save a shot through a solid baseline of using the RGB mixer. I think in general your videos are very focused and your instinct for what to include is excellent.
Luke - thank you - that comment means a lot - I was tempted to stop at what the RGB mixer did but couldn't resist making shot better - youtube prefers shorter videos so I went against the stats and did what I want - as always do!! Thank you for commenting - really helpful to me to know what my audience wants! Darren.
As someone who colors a lot of reality tv, I see shots like this fairly often. Thank you so much for sharing this technique with us. Actually, thank you so much for creating this channel. I love how well you help us understand the why and not just the how. That aspect helps me to actually grow my craft. Thank you so much!
@@DarrenMostyn I second this. Casey Faris has started doing hard promos on his paid for services, which I get (we live in a capitalist society). It's nice that you're sharing priceless information & tutorials to those who are maybe self teaching and can't afford to pay for lessons. I've always used the colour temp to fix footage, but it doesn't always work how I want it to. This is for sure going to help, night and day, for fixing my own shots... It’s funny because that shot looks like something out of a Netflix movie with the yellow-green grade that’s pretty big right now. Super helpful though!
2:56 this is an example of how they used to do special effects in black and white movies circa 1940's. Since it was in black and white, color filters and colored makeup were used the same way your image was affected by sliding a color while in monochrome. If they needed to do an aging effect on an actor, they would paint wrinkles and creases on his face with a certain color only. one filter wont see that color and another will. I just learned that last year and it blew me away on how cool that was. everyone have a great week! thanks Darren
When pandemic started, i did not know anything about video editing but had to fix my daughter's videos which very very important to her. Tried hard to balance the color and minimize the color cast in a free online software. The color cast was still there but my daughter's friend was very happy for the result but was just better for me. Started to know about coloring from some locals video editors tutorial on youtube. When i knew Davinci Resolve is the proper software for video color editing, i found your video about color page tips for beginner and watched all your video & Cullen Kelly ever since. Damn man...I just tried this on a piece of footage I HEAVILY and clumsily graded back in the day - I would normally have thought there was no way of making it look vaguely normal...but BANG, this made a huge difference!
Aloha Darren, I'm doing a BMD Color Training with Daria and we just did a shot matching exercise using the RGB mixer and a split wipe using the parade scope. It dialed the match in straight away and it looked amazing on a questionable shot. Glad to see you back in the saddle after the Mostyn Mayhem week of training! You've been an enormous help! I shot some run-n-gun indoor and outdoor footage with my GH5 years ago of my mom's greyhound adoption day. In my haste, I didn't readjust the color temp to match the indoor lighting. The indoor footage was gross. I struggled to get it to not look terrible. After seeing this, I brought up the project and applied your RGB mixer technique. WOW! So much better! Thank you!

Nice. I've seen so many colour tutorials but this is something I'm going to have to remember. I've often been disatisfied with the colour wheels and warper fixing one thing and messing up another, only to use Lum Vs Sat and all those fancy things, only to get myself in a mess after hours of my eyes adjusting, looking at it the next day and realizing it looks horrible. Thanks for going through in detail about this tool with this knowledge I was able to considerably improve some digitised standard 8mm footage. Along with the restoration tools in Da Vinci the final result was a massive improvement.
Just stumbled across this video in time! Doing a final colour grade of my first short film and getting annoyed by the colour cast of the primary colour wheels, and this is the EXACT tool I need for more subtle changes! I've never used the RGB mixer so off to play with it now!
Great stuff. Thanks Darren. Learned bucketloads about the RGB mixer in those 10 minutes than I ever imagined. I always ued the colour wheels before, but this is so much more effective.
Many thanks just learning DaVinci, and am really glad I watched this, its explained a lot of my questions. I couldn't understand why there were red and green channels in the blue. etc. That's great.
Nice! I love the RGB Mixer! I usually show something similar and end up explaining what's going on by demonstrating with a Splitter Combiner and soloing each channel. Also I like using it creatively for a little teal orange and improve skin tones. Well done for covering it! 👏👏
Darren, thank you for opening your eyes to this wonderful and not primitive frame balancing tool - RGB Mixer. I've never touched him in similar situations. And there are such shots... Oh, how often! Thank you, I will use it 👈👍🙌
i WAS JUSTT ABOUT TO RE-SHOOT A PART TOMORROW AS I SPENT HOURS Searching for this kinda video but couldn't find any. TH-cam Algo Gods today decided to be kinder on me today and this video popped up out of nowhere... You really saved the day my man🧡
Great job. I really learned so much more than just about the RGB mixer. One question however. Do you need to use the "tracker" when applying the corrections to the lady's face to the full clip? If not why do we need to use a tracker for other tools such as magic mask? Thanks again!!
Thank you. This tool has always been hard for me to figure out I guess because it's in YRGB space and not RGB. Still don't quite get why the sat goes up when you raise all 3 channels but getting there.
Thank you so much this was actually such a useful tutorial and I stumbled upon it by mere accident! I learned so much and I was indeed having issues with moving the wheels to get a more neutral image since as you stated the video would just end up looking tinted as opposed to simply balanced. 10/10
Great tutorial, very interesting. One thing that I am not clear on is the mixing of different types of colour adjustment - such as here where towards the end you use the tint controls after multiple adjustments in the RGB mixer. I would be interested to learn more about when and when not to mix different tools like this.
was really about balancing out that bad start point to allow any chance of a decent grade. My normal grade flow can be found in other episodes. Hope that helps. Use my playlists if that helps.
Thanks for this tutorial. I would like to learn how to make adjustments to a pan shot. For instance the shot begins with the subject in low light and poorly exposed and follows the subject as it crosses to a decent light source resulting in a properly exposed image at the end of the pan. How can DavinciResolve18 improve the poorly exposed portion without affecting the other portion? In my example the original footage was shot in Hi8 tape.
Thank you for this Video. I think it is very important to remember the basic tools (Besides the fancy AI tools) Tim on the Farbkanal made a nice Tutorial on working on Skintones with the RGB Mixer.
This was really, REALLY, useful, it seems it's a similar tool to the Photoshop Channel Mixer (which is incredibly good for fixing extreme dominants). If it can be used with also some Lab readout it would been even better (I am so use to correct stills images by looking at the number in the info panel in PS that I still struggle evaluating colour just using the scopes...). Amazing video, thank you so much!

Darren, thank you for opening your eyes to this wonderful and not primitive frame balancing tool - RGB Mixer. I've never touched him in similar situations. And there are such shots... Oh, how often! Thank you, I will use it 👈👍🙌
My pleasure! Its a really unchartered area on TH-cam!
i WAS JUSTT ABOUT TO RE-SHOOT A PART TOMORROW AS I SPENT HOURS Searching for this kinda video but couldn't find any. TH-cam Algo Gods today decided to be kinder on me today and this video popped up out of nowhere...
You really saved the day my man🧡
so pleased to hear that. Makes it all the more worthwhile. Hope your client is happy!
Great job. I really learned so much more than just about the RGB mixer. One question however. Do you need to use the "tracker" when applying the corrections to the lady's face to the full clip? If not why do we need to use a tracker for other tools such as magic mask? Thanks again!!
This is wizardry! :D Amazing explanation! I would have loved a more detailed explanation of the second part too.
And best explanation of the RGB mixer I have seen so far, thank you!
Thanks Rich
Darren always with the powerful fundamentals!
What a great tuto. A new tool for my next edits, if I have problematic visuals. Thanks.
I am a color n00b. This is simply amazing. Thank you, Darren!
You're very welcome!
This is SO good - thank you! Really clear workflow - I feel like I've started to understand not just the how but also the why of how this stuff works!
my whole channel is about WHY not just which button to press! Glad you appreciate that.
Just found your channel, am making serious progress thanks to you. Many thanks!
welcome to my channel - lots of curated playlists for you too!
your tutorials are always a great lessons to me, thank you 👍.
glad it helped.
🔥🔥🔥 always get the best info and straight to the point I appreciate this channel
Great video Darren 👍
Amazing technique! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us! Brilliant!
no problem mishka
Thank you for this Video. I think it is very important to remember the basic tools (Besides the fancy AI tools) Tim on the Farbkanal made a nice Tutorial on working on Skintones with the RGB Mixer.
you are welcome.
Thank you sir for amazing knowledge sharing 😊.... Now I will practice this tool to include this technique in future projects...Its really helpful
Absolutely amazing! No nonsense unlike some, "pseudo pros" out there
This was really, REALLY, useful, it seems it's a similar tool to the Photoshop Channel Mixer (which is incredibly good for fixing extreme dominants). If it can be used with also some Lab readout it would been even better (I am so use to correct stills images by looking at the number in the info panel in PS that I still struggle evaluating colour just using the scopes...). Amazing video, thank you so much!
