Love this! If something is too good to be true, than it most likely is! As a nutrition coach for digital nomads, it's hard to compete with people selling those "get thin overnight" diet plans. It takes time and effort to make a sustainable change, but in the long run, it's so much better for our physical and mental health! Thanks for sharing such an insightful and truthful video. :)
I did Adkins Diet for a year, and lost 70 pounds. The only downside I found, is once I hit the weight I wanted, and went back to eating little carbs with my meals again and my weight almost overnight kept growing and growing. In the matter of a month I grew 20 lbs, and I barely changed my diet, I just ate dessert more days and had the occasional cheeseburger.
I have always listened to the back voice of my head that “balance” what we wat & “ exercise” is the ultimate solution for a good healthy life . NO SHORTCUT.
My mom and brother religiously and periodically go on the south beach diet even though as soon as they stop they ALWAYS gain the weight back. I have tried telling them this doesn’t work and the best way is to have a healthy lifestyle but they just don’t listen. It’s so frustrating because those types of diets are so bad for your body.
This is incorrect. It should have said "doctors and DIETITIANS" rather than "doctors and nutritionist." Anyone can become a nutritionist, even the person selling you the fad diet! Where as dietitians have a degree in nutrition, undergo internships, register in the state and nationally, in addition to taking continued education hours.
If you ask 100 different "experts" to tell you what they think is the best diet or weight loss plan, you'll get dozens of different answers. Maybe that means that humans are incredibly sophisticated, diverse, and adaptive beings. There does not have to be *one* answer or diet that works for everyone. There could very well be many different diets that all work for certain person, and just because a certain diet works for one, doesn't mean it will work for another. At the end of the day, if your combination of nutrition and activity is helping you reach your goals and feeling healthy, it's the right diet for you. Some people find success cutting carbs, others find success counting macros, others find success going vegetarian, others try intermittent fasting. At the end of the day, to each their own. The only commonality with all weight loss plans/diets is that they need to create a calorie deficit. There are many, many, many different healthy ways to create that calorie deficit... so just pick one and see if it works for you.
+Aly Maldonado I slightly disagree with your 4th point. It shouldn't say "When you eat more than your body uses..." but instead "When your body _takes up_ more than it uses...", because different bodies digest differently, _even if_ there is no disease. That's what I have found at least. =)
i have always love eating and that made me lose weight super hard, tried a lot of diets and exercises along with it, but what made it possible was agoge diet. it changed my life. its always about the right diet for u
I don't see many fat people wandering around my country post-war period, in general 70s-80s and even 90s. We barely had any food to eat and my mom who is 157 cm tall and was weighted 40kg in her 20s was called FAT. Upon the open of the economy to companies like Cocacola, we have had more foods to eat and then the outburst of obesity among people in all age categories. Sugar and fat are consumed excessively in daily basis. Sugar in milk, in yoghurt, in deserts and in all kinds of foods. Naturally made foods are looked down of due to bland taste. If you eat everything in moderation and take good care of your body by frequent exercise, you will eventually drop weight regardless of whatever diet you choose.
CICO (calories in vs. calories out) IIFYM (if it fits your macros - (macronutrients)) TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) This is all you need to know about dieting. Make sure to try your best to eat your daily micronutrients as well (vitamins/minerals). Eat fewer calories than your TDEE to lose weight.
I lost over 100 lbs on a low carb diet in a year. I guess I had a lot of water to get rid of. I am off all 6 of the medications I was on, reversed fatty-liver disease and am no longer pre-diabetic. The food I eat is FANTASTIC and don't plan to ever go back to high carb/highly processed food. Most importantly, the science supporting low carb lifestyles has exploded in the last few years. The low fat diet is the biggest fad ever created. Do the research.
+Valerie Hanson Really happy for you, I'd never be able to give up carbs entirely. Really sad to see TED give this false information--saying lowering your calories amounts to a "fad diet" is just sad.
I am a major low-carb supporter. I have spoken (online) with far too many people who have lost 50-100+lbs and kept it off for 3+ years (the typical sign of true success) to say that it's "only water weight" and so forth. 🙄
Lost nearly 30kg (~70lb) over the past year, lost 5 kg in the first week and somewhat steadily for the next 7 months or so when I was studying and taking the stairs to classes
you can just eat like a "normal person"(you can eat everything but with moderation), and do gym or run on your neighborhood(physical exercises are good for your body). In short terms "Just live your daily life with moderation", i repeat, the key for a better life is the "MODERATION"
The single biggest problem with almost all diets claiming to have the effect of losing weight quickly is that they aren't sustainable. It sure will get rid of weight quickly at the beginning but the problem is that once you start, you have to stick to that diet for the rest of your life if you don't want its effects to be reversed. It doesn't matter how self-regulating you are, as humans, we are vulnerable to attractions and you simply won't be able to stick to the diet. The diet must be sustainable, meaning that you won't have to force yourself to do it. That's not saying that you shouldn't regulate yourself at all, its that you must realize that you cannot resist all the attractions as a human being.
+13thxenos - Now we're talking! Or maybe just an exercise bike, with a TV for playing Dark Souls.... Hmmm, i am getting a sudden inspiration! I wonder what an exercise bike costs on Ebay or similar?!
IchBinEin good for you! let me know how it turned out. I'm currently broke and don't have enough money to upgrade my pc. So I can't play DSIII even sitting on my ass, let alone on a treadmill or a bike. But I think a treadmill would be better, because I need my hands to be steady on a exercise bike. Or maybe I can put my elbows on the handlebars and keep the joystick from falling. That sounds better actually.
13thxenos - Turns out exercise equipment is super expensive, if you want something just a little bit decent. Who would have thought? The plan is on hiatus, but I'll keep my eyes open if I see a good deal!
Low carb diets work though. I have lost more then 20 kg on doing. However the reason it works, is because of how fast you'll feel completely stuffed, making eating 200-400 kcals less pr day much much easier, which is what really causes the weightloss.
+Sokar I haven't seen anyone that says LC didn't work for them, I also lost more than 20kg. also it's not a fad diet as this video showed, it's been around for centuries, eskimos/inuits eat half a kilo of fish every day, most of their energy comes from fats with little to no carbs at all.
Cutting down on REFINED carbs helped me a lot. It's a tradition in my country of Vietnam to eat white rice for almost every meal, including breakfasts. I used to eat white rice in such way for a long time till I learned about the problems with refined carbs. Now I eat lots of vegetables, even more than I used to (which many people around me already considered a lot), and sometimes fresh fruits with nothing added. I substituted refined carbs foods with unrefined carbs or high protein foods like fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, yogurt, kefir and milk for breakfasts. For other meals, I increase the amount of veggies and protein sources like meat and tofu. These are not as easy to find as food options high in refined carbs. (Common breakfast options where I live are mainly refined carbs from white flour from rice or wheat, like buns, noodles, rice pancakes, sticky rice, sticky rice pie- bánh chưng, or leftover rice and other dishes from dinner.) Many people around me discouraged me for cutting down, sometimes completely, on white rice or refined carbs as refined carbs arein almost all traditional Vietnamese dishes. I still eat refined carbs in unavoidable situations like a quick snack break (5') at work, but much less than before (3 main meals + snacks). The main problems finding healthy yet quick food when working is that on-the-go foods (other than fast-foods or processed foods), even regular hand-made meals in food stalls are highly processed and rich in refined carbs. But now when I look and feel much better, all those hard work pays off.
While the Banting, Atkins and South beach diets may have been fads, the low carbohydrate diets that they discus have been well supported in controlled trails published in reputable medical journals.
I'm having a special diet, it's called the ABC diet. Its calories intake changes frequently so the body gets confused and doesn't adapt to low intakes. So there are days when you can eat a lot, and others when you restrict. I'm on day 8, and I've lost good amount of weight so far.
That's the first time I heard a non-brazilian saying “Açaí” the right way! Thank's for the research! :) (btw, people around here eat açaí because we find it delicious, not because of some mumbo jumbo! it's pretty sad to see it being used to scam people elsewhere!)
FreakWithGun It looks like a grape-coloured large blueberry with a harder, waxy skin. Here in São Paulo it's usually served as a thick smoothie or as a sorbet, blended with guaraná syrup. The flavour is earthy and sweet. In the North and North-east of the country, it's used on savory dishes too (although I've never tried it like that).
Couldn't exist a right diet for all beacause we are all different. I'm follow a personal diet. Simply I leave out those foods that make me feel bad (like red meat, dairy products, white flour, sucrose and eggs)
As a young college aged male, I find that for me high protein intake, both in solid animal meat and in all forms dairy, and a high intake of carbs, particularly rice and grain, as well as several fresh fruits and some vegetables and if i'm not drinking milk, with the meal I have a quart of water with it. I have a naturally high metabolism but don't exercise regularly and my girlfriend tells me I need to eat more, despite snacking on normal portions every few hours and eating double portions at meal time.
there is such thing as a detox but it doesnt happen over a day or a couple days it takes months or years detox means rid the body of heavy metals and if you try to do it all at once youd get incredibly sick
Diets are really simple. 1. Cut back on carbs (bread macaronni ect.) 2. Cut back on sugars 3. Cut back on fatty foods (no all fat. Just not deepfry/animal fats) 4. burn more calories then what you eat. The first 4 weeks are the hardest. After that you will run, cicle, walk or swim more do to more energy and your body will no longer feel more hungry do to the sudden lack of carbs, sugars and fats.
Rosestyles8 If you want to gain weihgt you do the opposite of what I just wrote down. Simple. If you want to gain muscle you have to eat more then 2,500 calories, lift weight for 2 hours and let around 800 to 1200 of those calories be eggwhites(protein)
+hermanPla Yeah but how do you burn 2000 - 3000 kcal? You don't. Nobody does in the beginning. You musn't undereat, you have to aim for faster metabolism. Which means you gotta work out to build muscle to have faster metabolism -> to lose weight and burn calories. Saying 'burn more calories than you eat' might actually lead some beginners to undereating and slowing their metabolism down.
May04bwu Were did I say that people should undereat? And its very possible to burn 2000 to 3000 calories a day from good excersise. And ever tried to excersise while you haven't eaten well? its very hard. And I already sayed that your metabolism should be good. Just not the way you did it. "After that you will run, cicle, walk or swim more do to more energy and your body will no longer feel more hungry do to the sudden lack of carbs, sugars and fats."
I’ve been trying forever to lose the last 10-15 lbs. and tone up and that’s exactly what happened so I am very happy. I feel great about myself, I don’t find myself holding in my belly anymore and feel confident about myself and people have noticed that about me too...and my love handles are gone! I couldn’t be happier with the diet I've come to and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking to lose a little or lose a lot.”
Eat balanced, don’t think about it all the time, but be aware. You can have junk food once a month or twice, but eat it with joy, not feeling guilty. Do some sport that you think is fun like tennis, football, basketball... Cardio is not that efficient and I think is pretty boring. Constant salads become unhealthy
And for info about how cow's react to the physical harms inflicted on them in the dairy industry, please see Ted-Ed's video on animals feeling pain... Cows feel pain and value being alive. They also love their babies. We don't need to be breastfed past infancy. We can live and thrive as vegans. Please do the right thing. ❤
@@Sarahizahhsum If it's emotional abuse to speak out against animal rights violations because it might make those participating in oppression feel bad, then it's also emotional about to speak out against human rights violations for the same reason. How dare people make oppressors feel bad.....who cares about the victims of oppression, think of the poor oppressors!
@@Sarahizahhsum Yeah no. If someone is contributing to violence, exploitation, and oppression of others, I'm going to call it out. If you want to call it abuse to call out abuse, so be it. 😑
@@VixenAurora How is my statement at all so inflammatory? Are you gonna call a tiger immoral because he needs meat to survive? We do too. We are obligate carnivores anyways. Now that I can see as a debate, for sure. But on that premise, and given that 84% of vegans drop out, I'd say that we probably are obligate carnivores in a way.
Do your best to improve your sleep, stress, exercise and food. Make sure to sleep well, find ways to relax yourself which can work with exercise such as taking long scenic walks and doing short high intensity exercises when possible and do your best to eat balanced meals ~

My mom works for weight watchers and what they do is say you can eat whatever you want, as long as you don't exceed your daily "points". So healthier food is encouraged, but you can still eat unhealthy stuff, in moderation.
+Daisy Slusher - Some say the weight watchers approach to regulate the overweight is the only one that can work in the long run. Your mom will probably know it.
+Carl von Herrlichingen It probably is! Some of my mom's coworkers have been doing it for 20 years or more. My mom has been on her plan for about 4 years, and she said it's really easy to stick to the diet.
If it's a "cleanse", just know that bulimia (abusing laxatives to lose weight) is the other name for that style of "dieting". There's this one great diet that works for 100% of people. It's called the "Eat Right and Exercise" diet :-) Reduce, but don't eliminate, carbs (because it's *_SO_* easy to over eat on carbs). Eat plenty of protein and a big variety of vegetables and you'll lose fat without exercising. It'll take a while but you won't be hungry since you can eat all the meat and fat you want.
Is exercising really that bad? I exercise on a non-regular basis, (running & skateboarding whenever I feel like it) & I love it! Running is especially good.
The two most common mistakes imho are: 1) not even lifting and, 2) not eating enough protein. which can be reduced to 3) just caring about losing weight rather than caring about looking better. Doing proper strength training and eating enough protein won't necessarily make you lose weight faster, but it'll help you to go from fat to fit rather than going from fat to skinnyfat.
I'm studying Nutrition and Dietetics in my college, I'd say fad diets aren't really what my RDN professors suggest to their patient or to anyone at all. After all, its food fadism. It all boils down to individualistic approach of diet tailored specifically to an individual with unique characteristics and genetic factor that is substantial to take note when approaching on such. Not anyone is capable to do it correctly. So.. the best option is always to consult your Registered Nutritionist and Dietitian 'cause that's what they do.
Fad diets are a total waste of time and do your body more damage than good. But the MOST important factor is the psychology. You lose weight. And gain it back. It's not SUSTAINABLE. The key to making progress is sustainable lifestyle adjustment. This involves looking at your whole diet, everything you eat and asking 'is this what my body needs, and is this something i should eat for the rest of my life for optimal health?'. Knowing WHAT to eat and what NOT to eat can be complex for many people. In my Facebook group "Secret Body Transformation Principles", facebook.com/groups/304109307100257/ we discuss these topics and the psychology of having the body you want. It all comes down to feeding your body what it NEEDS. We will support you along the way and get you to where you want to be and we don't ask for any money off anybody.
I went on a very strict diet last fall, I would eat less than 1000 calories a day and work out for more than 1 hr... worst mistake of my life!. I felt lightheaded and tired most of the time. I did loose a great amount of weight tho, went from 197 lb to 150 lb in about 5 months or so. but then I stopped dieting and working out all at once and now I have gained some of that weight back!. even if I try to eat healthy, I just can't seem to loose any more weight, I feel like I gain 1 lb for every bite of food I eat :( so my advice is to eat normally and exercise! cutting back your calorie intake will only work in the short run but make things worse in the long run.
+kelly2ne1 Sometimes its the genetic predisposition only to get fat . Its not the fault of the dieter. It seems you take the way that works best for you.
+Carl von Herrlichingen i think you're right, most of my family from my dad's side is obese so I have a very strong genetic component for that. at least I'm in a healthy weight range now.
I've always been one of the heavier guys in my age group, but for the reason that I have a bunch of muscle. I have very low body fat, for the reason that I am very fit and have a high metabolism. In the winter, I sometimes play 200 minutes of hockey a week, and I know I work hard enough in hockey to burt hundreds of calories in an intense, 50 minute workout (or a hockey game). The only thing I've seen to work is calorie counting.
Kerbalnaught Even fat people are healthy when they are young, shit just goes downhill. In the end of the day if you can't survive a face on nuclear blast, you are a weak piece of shit,
***** a joke with a lot of truth to it! There is no clear definition of what a "superfood" is - having high values of something doesn't mean it is super - the adding of the word super to foods is nothing but a marketing device! So yes, the OP is ment as a joke, but also as a comment on the very idea of labeling something as being "super".....
this is why i practice self love and eat whatever i want because i hear all of these different things and i get pulled in opposing directions even by doctors/nutritionists/etc. who are supposed to know what they're talking about, but i feel like no one actually does
"this is why I practice self love and eat whatever I want" Well that's the reason you're fat. Also, treating your body like crap isn't self love. Self love is when you take care of your body and make sure you are healthy.
John Hunter lol brah, how do you know i'm fat? how do you know i'm treating my body like crap? i'm also questioning why you think "eating whatever i want" means that i just eat things that are unhealthy.
JoHorror I know you're fat because people that practice self love are part of the fat acceptance movement. I know you treat your body like crap because you are fat. Eating large amounts of healthy food and getting fat is still unhealthy.
John Hunter just because someone is fat doesn't mean they treat their body like crap. healthy looks different on everyone, there can be healthy fat people. no, you should really stop treating fatness as a sure sign of unhealthiness because it's not.

Where as dietitians have a degree in nutrition, undergo internships, register in the state and nationally, in addition to taking continued education hours.
doesn't mean it's incorrect
+Aly Maldonado Yep. Agree with all of the above.
+Aly Maldonado I slightly disagree with your 4th point. It shouldn't say "When you eat more than your body uses..." but instead "When your body _takes up_ more than it uses...", because different bodies digest differently, _even if_ there is no disease. That's what I have found at least. =)

I'm not, just gluten intolerant. And its mild. Acne and depression for me.
Some are sensitive. Many falsely correlate diet change with health improvement.
So what I'm hearing is, use fad diets before a high school reunion for quick, easy, yet temporary weight loss?
That temporary weight loss will surely bounce back soon though.
Ketki Mungi Yes, hence me using the word "temporary."

Ted ed is the one source I really trust im happy they made this video

CICO (calories in vs. calories out)
IIFYM (if it fits your macros - (macronutrients))
TDEE (total daily energy expenditure)
This is all you need to know about dieting. Make sure to try your best to eat your daily micronutrients as well (vitamins/minerals). Eat fewer calories than your TDEE to lose weight.
It's simple:
- eat (foods that aren't bad for you) whenever you're hungry, don't skip meals
- have no psychological issues whatsoever
No diet advice is good, including healthy eating. It's all about mentality; evidently Noom is the real deal but take uber discipline.
If only I had watched this a long time ago...
Thank you TED-Ed

Normal people suffer the Human Condition, which affects healthy behaviour in many life aspects.
Love the TED on the Fad Diet topic. Nice cartoon and explanation. Thank you. Let's eat organic.
I like this style of animation.
Cutting out sugar (non fibre carbohydrate) is actually very good and healthy if you can achieve it in an appropriate way.
I want that treadmill with the LCD screen in front playing a video of moving road
+Vikas V I want that LCD to show my computer. Then I can play dark souls while running.
+Vikas V How about you run outside?
(Common breakfast options where I live are mainly refined carbs from white flour from rice or wheat, like buns, noodles, rice pancakes, sticky rice, sticky rice pie- bánh chưng, or leftover rice and other dishes from dinner.)
Many people around me discouraged me for cutting down, sometimes completely, on white rice or refined carbs as refined carbs arein almost all traditional Vietnamese dishes.
The illustration were darling!
Food is such a complex topic. Calories, exercise, etc -__- it really just depends on the person........
So that's how you pronounce "açai"...

While the Banting, Atkins and South beach diets may have been fads, the low carbohydrate diets that they discus have been well supported in controlled trails published in reputable medical journals.
Fad Diets include Atkins, Mediterranean, Paleo, Keto, Vegan.
It's not sodium that causes a diuretic effect. It's the loss of glycogen in the liver from eating fewer carbs.
I'm having a special diet, it's called the ABC diet. Its calories intake changes frequently so the body gets confused and doesn't adapt to low intakes. So there are days when you can eat a lot, and others when you restrict. I'm on day 8, and I've lost good amount of weight so far.
+Rania Channeraul The thing is even on the good days the calorie amount is very restrictive so unless altered it would still not work very well.
I doubt that worked long term
That's the first time I heard a non-brazilian saying “Açaí” the right way! Thank's for the research! :)

Is it more like a blueberry or grapes? Google images doesn't help much..

It's all about cutting down on your calories.
You could also just balance and exercise more. That's all you literally have to do
As a young college aged male, I find that for me high protein intake, both in solid animal meat and in all forms dairy, and a high intake of carbs, particularly rice and grain, as well as several fresh fruits and some vegetables and if i'm not drinking milk, with the meal I have a quart of water with it. I have a naturally high metabolism but don't exercise regularly and my girlfriend tells me I need to eat more, despite snacking on normal portions every few hours and eating double portions at meal time.
Cody Lynn I sincerely hope, that you stay like this your whole life. Unfortunately, chances are your metabolism will slow down eventually:(
BRILLIANT. Sport on, TED!
So there's no such thing as a "Detox"? Mind-literally-exploded
there is such thing as a detox but it doesnt happen over a day or a couple days it takes months or years detox means rid the body of heavy metals and if you try to do it all at once youd get incredibly sick
Diets are really simple.
1. Cut back on carbs (bread macaronni ect.)
2. Cut back on sugars
3. Cut back on fatty foods (no all fat. Just not deepfry/animal fats)
4. burn more calories then what you eat.
The first 4 weeks are the hardest. After that you will run, cicle, walk or swim more do to more energy and your body will no longer feel more hungry do to the sudden lack of carbs, sugars and fats.
I'm a swimmer, I eat a low fat high carb diet averaging around 400-500g carbs a day, 2,500- 3,000 calories and I am borderline underweight.

Which diet are you referring to? Is it the Smoothie Diet because I've tried it and it worked very good for me and lost 8 pounds under just 4 weeks.

¨healthy addition to a balanced diet¨
I just wish I knew what a balanced diet is, especially considering everyones diet is personal
1:11 I'm not doing either of those things, thank you.
I've been on the South Beach Diet for over 10 years, and it has served me well. More research could have been done in regards this diet.
It's called the "Eat Right and Exercise" diet :-)
Reduce, but don't eliminate, carbs (because it's *_SO_* easy to over eat on carbs). Eat plenty of protein and a big variety of vegetables and you'll lose fat without exercising. It'll take a while but you won't be hungry since you can eat all the meat and fat you want.
Those characters looks like the 'Mumin trolls' (Or what they are called)
So cute!
Is exercising really that bad? I exercise on a non-regular basis, (running & skateboarding whenever I feel like it) & I love it! Running is especially good.
The two most common mistakes imho are:
1) not even lifting and,
2) not eating enough protein.
which can be reduced to 3) just caring about losing weight rather than caring about looking better.
I lost 30 pounds in 1.5 months cause of low carbs high protean. Cut down to 50 grams a day, but not completely out. No carbs will mess you up hard.
nice job!
Great lesson (that's still accurate) and wonderful animation.
We will support you along the way and get you to where you want to be and we don't ask for any money off anybody.
what about fasting?
Whole foods with balanced nutrition + regular workout
I went on a very strict diet last fall, I would eat less than 1000 calories a day and work out for more than 1 hr... worst mistake of my life!. I felt lightheaded and tired most of the time. I did loose a great amount of weight tho, went from 197 lb to 150 lb in about 5 months or so. but then I stopped dieting and working out all at once and now I have gained some of that weight back!. even if I try to eat healthy, I just can't seem to loose any more weight, I feel like I gain 1 lb for every bite of food I eat :(
so my advice is to eat normally and exercise! cutting back your calorie intake will only work in the short run but make things worse in the long run.
+kelly2ne1 Holy shit, only 1000? No wonder it fucked up, your metabolism went into full panic!
+Epiclol WutJumper yeah I know.. and now I'm paying the price for my stupidity ;'c
So which is the true diet?
I'm on a all cake diet it makes me thin!
3:44, what was the animator thinking? O_o
Well, it just sort of happened. I never really had that good of a diet, and no workout plan, but I still am in good health.

There is no clear definition of what a "superfood" is - having high values of something doesn't mean it is super - the adding of the word super to foods is nothing but a marketing device!
So yes, the OP is ment as a joke, but also as a comment on the very idea of labeling something as being "super".....
Eat everything Only small portions
this is why i practice self love and eat whatever i want because i hear all of these different things and i get pulled in opposing directions even by doctors/nutritionists/etc. who are supposed to know what they're talking about, but i feel like no one actually does
"this is why I practice self love and eat whatever I want"
Well that's the reason you're fat.
+JoHorror no having to much fat is bad
