  • Lithium, Hydrogen, Solid-State: Which Will Shape the Future of EVs? • Video
What makes an EV truly stand out from the crowd? One of the key factors is the motor, which converts electrical energy into mechanical power and drives the wheels. There are many types of motors available for EVs, such as induction motors, permanent magnet motors, switched reluctance motors, and more.
Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages, such as efficiency, cost, weight, size, and performance. However, there is one motor that might be the most impressive one yet: the magnet-free EV motor developed by ZF.
Join us as we discuss ZF’s magnet-free electric motor.

what a news! Induction motors without magnets or synchronous machines with electromagnetic excitation were invented a long time ago and were considered as classics until they were replaced by EM with PMs, now we are returning to machines with electromagnetic excitation and consider it something new! Are you seriously!?

Magnet free induction motors have been around for DECADES. Those motors are used in washing machines, refrigerators, furnace blowers, etc.
They are bulky for the power they output so the trick is to make the.motors smaller and more powerful for electric vehicles.

    • @jerryli5555
      @jerryli5555 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

That is true. To generate strong enough magnetic field, the current and coil turns must be crazily large. It is very difficult to make a powerful motor campact without permanent magnet, unless you use superconductor. So I doubt the video is real.

Those are squirrel cage ac induction motors though. This is really just a dc motors with a rotating inductor to excite the rotor instead of using brushes or slip rings. The inductor receiver has a built in rectifier to convert the AC induction current into DC. I'd imagine the power density of these motors will be great since you are able to generate flux from both the rotor and stator and since it's using DC power you don't have to worry about skin affect so you can run very thick wire to minimize resistance

Thing is: ANYONE who know a bit about electric motors, is aware of brushed, brushless, synchronous etc. variants.
ANYONE who is SHOCKED by such a development is either a babbling journalist or ... clueless.
The only 3 questions of interests about any new development in this sectors:
*) Did they manage to build the motor without a fallback to a brushed rotor (which would mean losses and extra maintentance)
*) What's the "power density" = output per weight?
*) what's the efficiency?!? brushed ones did >93% for ages

Tesla applied for US patents in October and November 1887 and was granted some of these patents in May 1888. "

Ironic they've gone from magnet free motors to permanent magnet motors to magnet free in just one generation. See, the ancients did know what they were doing 😁
Independently excited generators have been used since forever, so it makes sense to try it in a motor.
Wireless transmitting of the excitation current will be prone to interference so you may not win as much as you think, as you may have to put a lot of effort and cost into keeping it interference free.

      We call them brushless motors.
There are a few differences between the two...
Brushless motors have a higher level of control using AC and permanent magnets .
The induction motor makes it own magnetic field. It lacks the ability for precise speed control. These motors are best suited for things that run at a constant rpm.

bullshit it is not a new invention, the inventor, the Russian, was murdered here before because people would risk a revenue model with petrol and oil and he sold mopeds and cars and wheelchairs with a magnetic drive, which turned 10+ if you don't actually stop them !! The world can get rid of all those dangerous car batteries within 5 years, but the revenue model is number one for the money-grabbers and tax countries who earn a lot from car fuel, for example the Netherlands charges more than 2.15 per liter. That has to change. cars with magnet motors can then be sold at half of today's prices!!!!

Ford and GM just officially stopped EV production cutting losses. People don't want bulky batteries and long charging time. Even Sales for Tesla cars slowed down. Meaning this is a niche market for high tech fans at about 10 - 15 percent of total auto market. There is a huge consolidation in EV industry in China, lots of startups going bankrupt. Giants like BYD and Tesla can cover 10 percent of battery cars. No more is needed. There is a strong anti battery sentiment right now and market moving into hybrids of various types.

People that not really care about costs per km/mile, they can choose other solutions.
At least in the second hand market the buyers are looking for cars with quite low maintenance and running costs.

Uh? First off, all car sells are lower this time around then last, so both ICE and EVs have lower sell numbers not just EVs. 2nd Evs make up over 15-20% of all call sells right now and growing to 40% by 2030. Some markets already see new car sells of EVs around 30% today. Next year a few battery type comes out that is safer and more power dens as well allowing 15min charge times or better and double the current range from 300 to 600 miles. I will agree with the china issue, but thats chinas doing - not EVs doing. Their sub their cars to the point that startups came out of the wood work - in a industry not really design for a ton of startups. Hydrogen is horrable for the environment. The current hybrids are still EV + ICE .
