Yep, that part of the stream cracked me up a little. I remembered Mike predicted that that was the case on previous stream, and welp it's confirmed. Yea, I can confirm, at least personally, that once you got someone doing the screen-accurate, you'll grew more tolerant or even liking a stylized release. Now that the definitive 2014 Goji exist, I wanted that old SH's exactly for its stylization. Tho I can't say that for every stylized design, personally speaking. Like 2019 Ghidorah and Goji isn't a good one. 2024 tho issa good example of stylization done right. I think it looks nice from every angle exactly cuz it is stylized, and that sort of stylization is what I would love to see. That is if SH is going for the stylized market and not a mixed bag.
My dream Godzilla line is 7 inch, aka Hiya's current scale. To me, issa perfect size, I don't like kaiju figures that are too big. A, cuz of display space, and B, cuz of how expensive one unit would be. I am a completionist after all, so I want 'em all. Which leads to another point, it gotta have EVERY single kaiju in the chosen era. My pick is obviously Mv, as it is my fav aesthetic and to me personally is a perfect kaiju look. I've loved every single design they've came up with thus far... except for Terminator Goji. It has grown on me, but I've seen better fan design, for me personally. In terms of articulation range, I don't need hyper articulation, nor do I wanted them being 5 points, I just want enough. Again, kinda like what Hiya is doing.
The reason why I dislike too much articulation is cuz, A it's more expensive, B it's harder to manage with the amount of moving parts, and C part swapping issa nightmare. I've taken apart an SHMa neck once, and I couldn't imagine how hard and annoying it'll be had Hiya used multi segmented dumbell joints instead of a single long barbel joint.
In terms of paintjob and sculpts I want dem screen-accuracy. Some bit of stylization is allowed, so long as it doesn't deviates too far from the screen accurate. But for sculpt, uncompromisable, cuz I love the uncanny feeling of seeing the kaijus from my screen right in front of my very eyes. Next, I would love them to be reasonably priced, again Hiya is my example for this. Lastly, no exclusives. I truly hate manipulated scarcity, and I despise with a passion ppl who would charge astronomical price for an exclusive.
Like man, I used to want SHMa's Shinagawa and Kamata-kun but it was sold faaaaar more expensive than Awakening Shin in the aftermarket, which is also already got a huge mark up. I don't like it when hobby being too much of a business, where all ppl care about is investing, not enjoying the hobby too much. I could tolerate differing preferences for how the figure looks waaaay more than I could tolerate ppl doing and supporting scalpers. Hiya on shelf here is crazy, it makes SHMa looks cheap. A new MISB 2024 SHMa Goji is around $60 while used pre-evolved Hiya Goji is over $100. Same thing also plagueing Lego as a single minifigure could cost $200 from a $300-ish huuuuge set. It's like less than 1% of the whole piece counts. Man, I wish ppl would sell reasonably here, especially for exclusives. Again, why I hate them. Cuz it wasn't seen as a novelty item to enjoy or remind you of a convention you gone to (if it's cons exclusive), but seen as an investment. Heck, most didn't even care about the toy, and yet they took a unit or more that could've been bought by ppl who truly wanted them.
Tho I suppose I'll be fine if the exclusives are the non-canon forms, aka actual stylized look. Like SHMa's 2014 poster color and 2019 night color, as suppose to 2019 burning or atomic breath. Canon colors/forms to me are alt look/color change that is shown on-screen or other media (graphic novels or comic) that is a result of changes that truly happened to the body of said character. For example the blue glow of an atomic breath Goji, color code change for Ultraman, or the blonde hair of a Super Saiyan. Non-canon forms are stylized look that isn't based on any on-screen or other media (graphic novel/comic) and is something truly made up like an interpretation of an artist to said character, or it could be a conditional lighting like 2019 night color or 2014 poster color, aka color changes that were effected by the lightings on the environment and not from the character's body itself. I would be ok if these guys exist as exclusives, as I don't think many would want them as much as canon forms.
A bonus wishful one, more than the aforementioned points, are releasing fan-made designs. I've seen sooo many cool fan-designed/recreation of legacy kaijus in Mv aesthetic. One of it is the Kiryu I can't stop yelling about. There's also King Caesar, Titanosaurus, Moguera, Spacegodzilla, Anguirus, Destoroyah, Keizar Ghidorah, Hedorah, Biollante, etc. Would be cool if fans could submit a design, their own or others, and the company would do a poll/survey to see if anybody would be interested to buy. Afterwards they'll put out a PO with a certain MOQ before begin production.
    To summarize:
    1. 7 inch or 1/666,6 scale
    2. Need to have all kaijus in the selected era/franchise
    3. Enough articulation (not a statue nor hyper articulated)
    4. Screen-accuracy in both paintjob and sculpts
    5. Affordable
    6. No exclusives except for heavily stylized looks
    7. (Bonus) Fan designs included

Also, I’m really excited for the upcoming Hiya Toys GMK Godzilla and Millennium Godzilla too, hopefully they will eventually make the Final Wars Godzilla since the sculptor officially confirmed that the Final Wars Godzilla is his most favorite Godzilla incarnation so it’s possible that it may eventually happen.

The way Hiya is doing it is certainly the way I would do it: accurate as possible, very attentive to relative size, affordable enough that most people can get in on it! Although personally I’m a lover of plenty accessories myself (been a hard time for people like that 🥲).
Plenty more ideas I’d like to see in figure form, like a series featuring original designs for all the monsters, exploring some of Godzilla’s unmade foes (as hard as that would be to get off the ground), I’ve had this idea for “anthro” style figures (think of the “Monster Warrior Godzilla” designs but as action heroes). I just wanna see people get real creative with it!

To be honest, Bandai’s kinda doing my dream Godzilla line(s) right now! Having a line of 5-inch scale soft vinyl toys, AND 6-inch articulated action figures AND cute little blind boxes with sweet color variants is pretty much everything I could want! I really hope these lines do well so that they’ll continue, because it’s making me incredibly happy. Having smaller soft vinyl’s is great because A. They’re easier to get/accomidate, and B. They go with my Ultra Monsters. The “Godzilla Action Figure” line is right in the sweet spot for me of being articulated/accesserized enough to get some neat poses, while still feeling approachable and playable. And those blind boxes are just the sweetest thing, and I love them. My hope for these lines is that they do well, so we can get more obscure monsters.

  • @Arghust

Me personally, Hiya damn near fulfills what I want from a line. Bigger, screen accurate, fun and posable, cheaper, learns from fan feedback, seemingly seeks to up themselves on improving product quality even when the fans don’t ask for it but I really appreciate it, and for how quickly things are getting done. 2 years down the line and they are already starting to mix fan favorite designs from the Heisei and Millenium Eras in with the monster verse releases. They have an incredible looking GMK on the way and my reaction was me squealing like a little bitch. And I’m not saying that Neca or SH didn’t do a good job with theirs, it’s just that Hiya has a more satisfying feel to their plastic and gives off vibes like they are bringing the figures to life just like the movies did with the suits.

Been a SHMA collector since day one in my junior year of high school.
Always found a way to budget for each release, but lately I've been skipping more and more releases. The brand feels diluted and too comfortable with its position.
SHMA has been putting way more resources into other properties and honestly I think that's a good thing. Their MH and Yugioh releases have been fantastic.
A majority of their kaiju releases over the past 5+ years have been reissues, repaints, or reuses of the same mold. When we do get new releases they're usually super solid, it feels like two completely different entities running the same line, there's no consistency to the brand anymore.
Hiya coming in and offering I'd say 60-80% of the quality of a SHMA for as low as 30-60% of the price, It's a no brainer that Bandai Tamashii are getting dragged.
I want to buy both lines but SHMA has just been giving me less and less reason to keep going in.

(10:25) My dream Godzilla toy line would be something very similar to what Trendmasters did back in the day (and with a little bit of what Playmates is doing currently with the MonsterVerse toys as well). Like have 5 or 6 new monsters for each wave that comes out, release a new wave once a year, and have it come with some accessories along with a trading card that has little bit of info on that specific monster as well. Have many different verity of figures like ones with sound, ones without sound, and ones that come with fun gimmicks. Different sizes like 3 inch, 6 inch and even 12 inch toys of each monster. There would also be some play sets like what Bandai Creations (or Bandai America) used to make like the "Crumble Zone" set from 2002, with destroyable buildings and vehicles. And it doesn't really matter to me if its movie accurate or not or how posable it is. As long as it looks good, doesn't break easily, and doesn't look cheap or lazily made (like with paint *cough *cough "Movie Monster Series" *cough *cough lol). 💵📦🤔💭🦖🃏
    (0:08) Priceless lol. 👌😆

I think Hiya is doing way better than Bandai, but that doesn't mean I hate SH monsterarts, I still love a lot of the figures they make, at the end of the day, we all will like and enjoy what we think is best. And thats the beauty of the Godzilla community (at least it was), that we love talking about how cool these figures are... and hell, Competition is VERY VERY good for my shelf and my wallet.

Like you said earlier in the video where Hiya goes all out for accuracy. SHMA is leaning more heavily into the "Monster" aspect of SHMA and go with my stylized takes. Both are good for different reasons and are competing in the same general market of "Articulated Godzilla Figures".

Honestly, at this point I feel like there's one of three futures for S.H.Monsterarts, each with their own different feasibilities. One is what you outline here, SHMA leaning into the stylization aspect even further, something akin to their Godzilla 2000 release. The second is that they might just let Hiya have Godzilla and focus more on Gamera, which I don't find particularly likely. And the final is that SHMA could even just forgo Godzilla entirely and let Hiya go nuts while they continue with Yu-Gi-Oh and Monster Hunter releases instead. I feel like there's at least some likelihood of the third one, but I suppose that depends on exactly how well their Yu-Gi-Oh and Monster Hunter releases sell, something I'm not privy to.

On the topic of SHMA getting hate for being the only option...well, for Showa designs, today they still are. Super7 has been all Heisei and one Reiwa, Hiya has been Heisei, Millennium, and Monsterverse.
And I know Super7 is getting to Showa eventually, but I prefer the pricing/sizing of Hiya...and there's been no indication so far they're ever touching Showa, so if I want my Showa monsters, it's SHMA or nothing, and SHMA is way out of my price range.
    Feels bad.

SH Monsterarts is billed as a standard figure series that incorporates Bandai action figure "art" under the theme "pursuing character expression through monster action". That's what they do and that's why I like them. They are the ultimate Godzilla action figures. They are to me now what trendmasters was to me when I was a kid. In fact, if they would have stuck with the lights and sounds they would have been exactly that but for an adult collector. They never claim to pursue movie accuracy. In fact they often put out figures that pay homage to the artist's original work that led to the final on-screen representation. Sakai's 2000, Ohrai Noriyoshi's poster color variants for the Hesei characters, Ghidorah KOTM's concept, and Jared Krichevsky's Shimo are some examples of this and are all represented in the line. I'd like this about the line because no one else makes those figures. I think they already stand out in the market because of this.
I don't know about a line I would want, but I want an X-Plus Gigantic Series Minya. Full blown 50cm Minya.

I like sh monsterarts. I really do. But I'm sick of the fact that in recent years we've been getting almost no accessories. Mainly for Godzilla for some reason. Ok, if they don't want to give us atomic breath, then at least they should give us something. I don't know, for example extra hands (like in gvk), extra head (like in 72 and ultima), or some minifigures (like in ultima (small jet jaguars)). Minus one should have at least a train or tanks, but unfortunately it only had air. And I'm not saying that because I can't stand sh, quite the opposite. I want them to compete with hiya with dignity. They can be more expensive (but not too much), but at least they should entice potential customers with something. And let them finally start using cgi files, not concept art. It's important that they don't lose their license either. Because if they lose, it will also be the end of hiya as we know them now. Why? Simple. Without competition they will raise prices without hesitation and stop trying so hard. Unfortunately, that's how it works, it's not charity after all (and I'm saying it as someone that likes hiya (sh too))

The Charging Variant, that's fucking amazing.
My dream Godzilla line? Honestly what I want from sh figuarts when they have both the matte painted SSJ hair and then the translucent hair for when they have powered up in the aura, but instead of different releases... make them in the same damn box.
Essentially swappable back spines as you have pointed in the new larger scale Hiya intends to release, with a light up feature, swappable heads, with translucent glow up eyes, swappable tails for both an articulated and static feature, and a light that shines through the translucent beam. The scale is around 8-9", Godzilla is too small in his figure lines, especially compared to Marvel Legends for instance, where I have Thors and Hulks that tower over my main boy.
This would be fucking expensive but I want a definite figure for the suits and enemies for the eras. It's bonkers that pretty much every line can be seen as Godzilla meeting this niche, articulation or sculpt. I want something like Mafex Hush Batman, in the sense it's a definite figure that can fill in as a centre piece ( not scale wise but the ultimate version)
Additionally yeah the fucking conversations around Hiya vs Monsterarts figures in the past year and half have been fucking exhausting. So many shit talks and complete dismissal of many fantastic releases. I procure both when I can because you get a great product from both ends. People are too dogmatic these days especially around fucking toylines, it's not the PVC Civil War for "insert IP like here", they're as you said,
    FUCKING TOYS.
Too many motherfuckers in this hobby are way toxic/passionate ahout their favourite pieces of plastic. From softgoods vs plastic capes, articulation vs sculpt, stylized vs media accuracy. The only thing people can generally agree on is the lack of accessories and companies (cough Hasbro) stinginess with them.

Something that's not mentioned across TH-cam among the Hiya v SHMA discourse is the country of origin for each company. Hiya has some government funding in China that allows them to sell their figures at a borderline at-cost price. Bandai on the other hand has to work with capitalist restrictions in Japan which creates inflated prices. It's just an observation of a specific context that is not used when discussing these figures and their companies.

Sure for same figures most of the time I’ll go with hiya because of affordability but in some cases like Kong I like shmas Kong more just because it’s more posable and smaller I prefer Kong to be smaller and also Showa stuff because shma has the license to Showa while hiya doesn’t so I’ll gladly sell my kidney for a good articulated Showa figure but for heisei, MV, and millenium I’ll just stuck with hiya because well affordability it’s just much cheaper than paying lets use sdcc 89 for example and ik hiya doesn’t have an 89 but 91 is the closest in this case I’d rather pay 51 dollars for a larger, cheaper, and cooler looking in my opinion plus he comes with a beam unlike the 100 dollar shma one which doesn’t
But atleast there’s options to choose from, If you want a more 6 inch scale with better range of articulation and amazing detail go with shma if you want a cheaper alternative that’s 7 inch scale and really good articulation and detail go with hiya this year has been a gold mine for Godzilla collectors or collectors as a whole.

You think that's bad... Professional wresting fandom is the absolute dregs. The way trolls talk, you'd think the company you like to watch slapped their mom around 😆 As for my ideal Godzilla line... well... honestly... it WAS 5PointXL. Beautifully sculpted, didn't take up too much space, compatible with 1/700 scale model kits for diorama-making, sold at a reasonable-enough price point considering that you got them in sets that included a nice variety of kaiju that I might not otherwise buy on their own. It's just too bad the line ended so prematurely. My ideal scenario would have continued the 5PointXL with Godzilla vs. Megalon (Godzilla, Megalon, Jet Jaguar, Gigan), Ebirah Horror of the Deep (Godzilla, Mothra, Ebirah, Giant Condor accessory), Destroy All Monsters Round 3 (Kumonga, Kamacuras, Manda, Varan), King Kong Escapes (King Kong, Gorosaurus, Mechanikong), Space Amoeba (Gezora, Ganimes, Kamoebas), and a one-off of Dogora .

Nope, sorry but thats cope. Its ok if they want to stylize like with Kong, but the concept art excuse is no longer acceptable for making them look worse. Kong didnt look worse, he looked different, G14 didnt look different, he looked worse, same as all of 2019 except Godzilla.

I should have clarified that this explanation is only for the older suits. MV and even newer Toho movies are different when it comes to reference material that is available. Look out for TAS' interview with Bandai from SDCC coming sometime soon where they talk about development timelines for new movies. It's a balance between having enough development time to have product available when the movie is released, and having the most updated assets to work from.

@@kaijucanuck4492 I guess my issue is I’m not entirely sure how viable the “concept art” excuse truly is in the end, especially with a similar company making figures at a similar scale that are at the very least revealed around the exact same time as SHMA, and yet have far more accurate figures. Of course, I have no knowledge of the inner workings of the production of either Hiya or SHMA’s lines so forgive me if I’m missing something, but I’m not sure if it is wholly comparable anymore. How exactly does Hiya make almost perfect depictions while SHMA, a company who seems to have much more funding at least according to their asking prices, and assumedly the same support from Toho/Legendary as Hiya in terms of reference material, keep fumbling so bad?

This is one area that I am generally unclear on.

How many more companies should give us more accurate figures before we all point at sh and call them out on not trying.
Thats the true question tas and others avoid. They have their system, we ask how it works instead of asking how have they not changed it in 10 years, and thats the problem.
The people who have access to SH contacts never ask the real questions. Sadly its always the other side, the one sh will never contact because its either small creators, customers with no platforms, or STR. And A LOT of these guys would get too aggressive and antagonize sh too much, but the sh supporters are too afraid to ask, so theres this void of communication and SH never gives true explanations to the real questions.
