The Athearn Genesis locomotives were made by Samhongsa in Korea. The main gear on the axle is prone to splitting like the diesel center gears did on Proto2000. Replacements are available from NWSL. The other issue is the wires get pinched en route to the tender. Love the steamies!
The Hiawatha class As and the Daylight are my favourite American steam locos, one day I hope to get a Daylight for my model railway! Edit: Big boy is also one of my favourites
This 2 part special is something different. And i like it. Done very well man very good. I also love how every locomotive has a story to be told of. @@imfunniguy3744 interesting. I was thinking of just buying a chassis and a shell for the Niagara locomotive from Bachmann and then I will have a updated better version.

There is nothing wrong with doing some collecting and having some projects to work on if you like spending time doing that. That being said, there is also plenty of truth to the advice you hear often given on model railroading sites. Something to the effect that you are better off having 3 or 4 or 5 quality locos that work very well rather that 20 or 30 that don't run well, if at all. Particularly if somewhat realistic scale speed operation is important to you. A younger child is happy running everything at 100 mph scale speed around the layout, which just about anything will do with decent trackage. But as you mature into the hobby, reliable, realistic operation becomes important. Most people serious about the hobby start focusing on quality trackwork and fewer but better running locomotives. Maybe fewer isn't always the case, lol but better operating is.
I completely respect your opinion. I personally like having both some decent and low quality engines to mess around with but I agree, operations wise they don't perform well.
@@SMTMainline There is plenty of room in the hobby for people to do what they like. I am not going to be like some people that get all critical if things are not done exactly prototypically, or the way "they" think things should be done.

Fun fact: 4005 had a crash back in the 1900s killing a few animals and killing its crew but luckily it was repaired after the crash and she was put back in service again before being scrapped I think.
SMT, Bachmann will sell you a brand new set of drivers for your GS4. All you do is remove the 6 small 3mm bolts and the flat screw on the eccentric crank, pull the lower cover and drop the new wheels in. I think they are 40 bucks. I have fixed my 18-20 of these GS4s like that
How did you tune your big boy to work without stopping? Mine kind of stops in slow speeds. I got mine for a great price from my hobby shop. Could you show us how you took apart the shell and the repairing process. Not too many videos here with the old cab mounted motor.
Athearn Genesis mikados are infamous for having damaged gears, both the axle and idler. I rrplaced mine with a NWSL replacement gear. It runs much better now!
