Will be interesting what kind of additions it gets, if it has regular patches.

If you care about any more feedback...
The slimes immediately confused me. They seem very misplaced and lack interesting animation (and AI, for the smaller ones). Hopefully they're just placeholders. A creature that is matching with the (Norse) theme would add a lot to the atmosphere and feel of the game. The slimes just seem lazy...like an asset flip.
Regarding positives, all the little added details are great. They often make the difference between a really good and a just mediocre game.
Really solid work overall. If I were in your shoes I'd just be worried whether the gameplay loop has enough attraction for a big audience. It seems a bit too generic/worn out for my own tastes.

You have those stair case popping in and out of existence around 18:58 …. I would suggest making it more flashy or magical maybe with some fitting sound … it simply looks a bit flat and illogical to me as it is now.
For example you could have some sort of magical clouds fading in and out of existence while inside those your staircases appear. What would be important though is having the timing of the fading in somewhat flexible in regards to when your stairs are supposed to appear so it isn’t to predictable. I think it would also make it more interesting that way as things appear that aren’t staircases and are a bit of a distraction making it a bit harder.

John , was a great privilege to have this game test session with you. Had a blast, even just looking at it now the game has so much appeal - looking forward to checking out the next build, if this blasted ever lockdown ever ends! Also, I was not aware of just how much I say "Ahh, yeah" or "Ahh, okay" all the time. Must have been hundreds in this video !

I've been playing swords and sandals for over 15 years, my favorite version is Swords and Sandals 2. You've inspired me to start developing my own games. I'm now in school for software engineering, and I've spent a lot of my spare time learning programming so I can develop my own engine and games!

I came in expecting the "Pro game designer" to give out some shit and mainstream opinions, but I loved how you actually gave out such good observations and pure upgrades to systems that already exist. You didn't look at the developed things as something to be remade, but rather you gave tips on how to improve them, with some neat tricks that aren't that hard to incorporate. Most of the tips are just generally good tips for anyone creating any type of game, kudos

3:38 Oliver: “What happens if you push the boxes over the edge?”
    John: “Don’t…Don’t…Don’t!”
When the boxes fall off the edge of the viewable screen it causes a divide-by-zero calculation, in turn causing a byte overflow. A zero-day bug in Windows causes the dropped bits to save to a particular block of L1 CPU cache. The dropped bits happen to form a jump instruction paired with a legitimate memory address to the block of L1 cache right before it. So instead of crashing the game, the program jumps to the new address. It happens to be a NOOP statement so it runs and proceeds to the other memory address, creating an infinite loop.
The infinite loop causes a nano-scale electromagnetic field inside the CPU. Now, the new Intel Alder Lake CPU uses a newly-developed composite silicon material for its L1 cache. The particular crystal lattice structure of the material was accidentally engineered to match the fundamental spacetime geometry of our universe. The nano EMF field then resonated with this structure, opening a tiny quantum vortex. The vortex grew as it connected and resonated with more of the composite material. The material acted as an amplifier. The quantum vortex absorbed data from its surroundings. No longer bound by the limitations of computer electronics, it pulled data from the nearby fabric of spacetime itself. It found the concept “MEAD” over and over again from the local vicinity. In a process we mortal humans are too limited to understand, this vortex used this information to open a portal and connect to another plane/reality/dimension, and pull back data/energy/matter from it. Within seconds the vortex expanded to the size of the motherboard and now real fresh, stout Mead poured out of all ports, grates and openings! It flowed straight from the portal that the quantum vortex opened.
At first John thought and said, “Oh $*%!, my computer is ruined!” But he then realized he had a bigger problem on his hands, as about a gallon of mead per second gushed out of his computer’s orifices. His office floor quickly filled with the pungent liquid.
He evacuated what he could and called the fire department and explained there was a “big leak”. They sent out a pump unit and portable tank to vacate the liquid. Luckily they saved his house from completely flooding! But they quickly realized the profundity of the situation and that it needed “higher involvement”. The pressure was so high at the source of the vortex that they could only get as close as a foot to it. And it had no apparent source that could be cut off. At the rate it was gushing it would fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool every week!
They contacted Emergency Management in the Australian Department of Home Affairs. The Feds took over the scene, claimed Compulsory Acquisition on the house, and brought in more equipment. They called in the team that handled the wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan since the amount produced per day was on a similar scale. Even higher up the chain of command CERN got involved to investigate and research the QPI “Quantum Phenomenon Incident”. Not even John or the Australian government knew about their involvement.
After months scientists and engineers found no way to turn off the Mead spigot. They eventually removed the now-rusted computer parts, but the portal was self-sustaining. So they initiated construction of an underground pipe to secretly carry the liquid to a local chemical plant several miles away. They set up a clandestine project to separate the Mead into water, ethanol fuel and fertilizer. They allowed John and the local government to keep proceeds from the sale of it in exchange for their help in keeping the situation secret.
Thus an uncaught user interaction in a game led to one of the most profound technological accidents in history. And Ulric got his mead, albeit in a very meta and roundabout way🍺

I like the quality and look of this game, it's just that it feels like there is no unique twist to it that sets it apart. It just kind of reminds me of old-school flash games I played in the early 2000's. I'll be curious to see how the sales go. Maybe a well executed game that feels a bit generic will still do well. Maybe that's enough. And having this channel definitely helps.

    • @danieltomas3282
      @danieltomas3282 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Truly generic and relatively easy to make on the coding side

    • @Mycrosss
      @Mycrosss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@I ain't no millionaires son! That's not the point, realistically there is not a single soul that would buy this game, even if it was priced at 4.99$, cause it does what most free flash games do, and it doesn't add anything to it. The thing is, this type of game can be made from scratch within a week or two by an experienced coder/artist, hence why there is so many of them. A game this simple, needs to excel at something, like art, music, atmosphere, polished movement, combat feel, level design for it to be sucesful. You have Hollow knight, shovel knight, rogue legacy, and many others that excel at any of these things, but are basic platformers.
I don't want to be mean, but this game is poor to mediocre at most of these, If it was a f2p mobile game, yeah, it probably would get some traction, but as a PC/console game, it just feels like a project a student would make in a few weeks to just get it over with.

I'm not a designer myself so I couldn't say what he's supposed to add but as a player I really don't see why I'd rather play this than another game of it's kind instead

This is probably too late but a subtle change I would like to suggest is when the scroll opens it would be neat to see it animate as if rolling open and rolling closed. There is also a slight lingering delay after accepting the close button to disappear, and I think it would look nicer if the button text animated away before the scroll closes to confirm to the player the action that occurred.
When a secret wall fades, there could also be a shaded vignette around the tunnel space to give the illusion of being under or inside. Not really needed but I thought it would be nice polish to add in the end.

One quick thought I had after watching this. There seems to be several sections of each level where you can no longer go backwards. In this scenario, the player finds out at the end of the sublevels that they missed a hidden rune - what do they do then? Replay the whole level, sublevel, or continue from a specific checkpoint? I'm assuming the hidden runes and chests will give you some sort of power up, so going back would be beneficial. The completionist inside me needs to know :D

    • @LostRelicGames
      @LostRelicGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

It's a good point. The game plays much like new Super Mario platformers, where're runes are analagous to mario's hidden golden rings. My game is not a vania, and follows more of the Mario map style with dedicated themed levels. Within those levels there will however be a degree of lateral movement, back and forth, up and down, exploration. Some levels more so than others. Levels will be repayable. But yeah a good observation on your part, and something I have been thinking about. Thanks for the comment!

It's a small touch to some, but I also really like the way you animate the grass that's super-close to the camera in the foreground. It's such an overlooked thing in platformer art direction, having foreground stuff as well as background/midground, and it helps enormously with immersion, especially when you don't have the advantage of 3D, much less a first-person view, to 'draw in' the player.

Cool to see your reaction to your friends reaction. It's scary to share your work. Especially when it's still so early, but I think it's vital to get some outside eyes on a project. I think it might've been nicer if you'd set the camera n mic up properly, but also it does give it a pretty raw, live and real playtest feel the way you've filmed it, which is nice, cause that's how it actually is. Thanks as always for keeping it real :). Signed up for the playtesting, hope I get to have a play sometime soon too.

Animated Title Screen - Ideas. Have the birds fly on and off screen. Have the guy's axe swaying slightly up and down. Move the waves slightly like Oliver said (maybe pop a shark fin out and back under if you can). Have his helmet glisten slightly, as if being caught by the sun. That's it.
Love the starting sound effect and the rooster. Great opening! The intro is great - don't take it away.
Game looks beautiful John! Breaking and killing things looks very satisfying. Love the Mario feel to the map.

Overall looks very good, I really liked how the game feels, added to wishlist hope it becomes valuable to you. Couple of more designer additions that I think could be help full to make onboarding better and more user centered.
-The checkpoints, reminders can be made as hud reminders (ticker system) that goes into scene after trigger, stay for a while and go away so the players gameplay doesn't have to be broken. Ex : checkpoint reached, press button to use shield. I understand that appearing on signs looks cool but have to disappear with time not with location imo.
-Can be good to have a meta effect when health is too low to inform player, red screen flash maybe super subtle one.
-rewarding and coin collection can also have maybe very minor feedback to player that pushes emotion a bit forward.
-Can have some shake effects on objects for destruction as well on cage or same texture to represent action.

Ha, I am very new to game dev but my very first game, I am working on, has a little animation in the title screen to make it more interesting. That made me happy. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. I took a few things from this session.

This was really fun to watch. Here's some thoughts I had:
Rather than having the player go left at the start to do the tutorial section then go back right to get to the boat, you could redesign it a little to just have the player traverse the tutorial section on the way to the boat. It's a quick section, it would remove the backtracking, and it might flow a little better.
For the secret passages you can walk through, it may look nice if only the front of the wall disappeared, so it looked more like you were walking through a tunnel. This is more so directed at the secret passages outside like the first one you come across.
When jumping backward if you're in the middle of an attack animation (whether throwing or main weapon) it may be nice to have the character not turn around. So you're not flipping back and forth and you're always facing the guy you're attacking.

The crack in the wall when walking through should have a backdrop of the wall still as if it's a tunnel in the wall and not a free floating wall

  • @matthewventures

    Looks amazing. Some thoughts:
    - Making them walk back through the level at 4:50 is interesting. A good time to make sure they know they can hold to charge the jump over the double block. Maybe remove the old signs and have a new sign to catch players who have only tapped jump until then. Maybe add an enemy or chicken to kill on the way back.
    - The idle is a bit too aggressively animated, I think it looks a little glitched. I think it would look better slowed down.
    - The player is asked to wait for too long at 5:30, the ship should move at least as fast as the character does else it feels weird.
    - AN emergent tutorial at 6:40 should remind the player they can throw if they have not done so already
    Did not watch past 8:30

Best of luck with your game dev. Just saw this video. Even if platformers are not my cup of tea, your game looks great even in alpha. I like the fact that it's very responsive; I think that's more important that graphics or anything else and what makes a game fun to play.
To be honest, I've had an idea for a fairly large and complicated turn based strategy game (that's the genre I like to play- in what little time I have - in addition to board games), but between two jobs, I've not done much coding on it yet. (past a couple of small prototypes testing specific concepts only) I don't know if I can find the time to code such a massive project, it can be a bit daunting, but we'll see.
If you have any insights, drop me a response. I've seen some of your other videos, and there is some more to see, maybe I will find some answer to my questions.
Keep up the good work, it's nice to see someone who's in it for the games (and the fun).

Looks great. As a suggestion I think the check point flag should come down right when you land on the platform because when it comes down with the player blocking it, it loses a bit of the flag effects. When you go over the flag maybe it could come up with the word check point like it did with the level name but not as large.
