The little boy in the video is the little girls angel, that's why he disappeared into that light.

This music video has a lot more meaning once you realize that this song is about her niece and that the gravestone in the video was hers.

Actually it's not. Ms McBride has stated that the story about this being about her niece is not true. How it got started is anybody's guess. And the stone in the video is a prop.

When this video came out, most US states didn't have "mandated reporter" laws in effect yet. Now I think it's been enacted all over the US. Every school employee including kitchen staff & janitors, all daycare workers, ALL medical personnel regardless of field (even volunteer paramedics/firemen sign a statement acknowledging the mandated reporter requirements & procedures) & government workers of almost every category are supposed to contact local CPS & report suspected abuse. It's not complicated & you don't have to be sure/have proof, CPS will contact police & do an investigation. You just file a report of suspected neglect or abuse of any kind, include a statement of what's causing your concern & then they take over.

This one always makes me cry for two reasons The first being this little girl was me at one point, I was abused in every sense of the word, my mom SOLD me because she was broke... And I feel like remaining silent in the face of this makes you just as guilty... So the teacher saw the bruises and should have said something and because she didn't the outcome is partly her doing!! Silence makes you a guilty party too, people saw me being abused and turned the other cheek... So regardless of whether it's my child or not I refuse to remain silent 👌 I've gone to jail for protecting a little girl from her mother!!

I went to work for DHS and worked for the state for just over 6 years. It gave me a nervous breakdown. I went back to college and became a nurse. This song makes me bawl everytime. Now in defense of those that have to make that call, things are going to happen, much past that sighting in the classroom. In my case it turned out not to be abuse, but my heart rings for those that have to not only make that call, but yet see it.

You are right about the system. I reported a former neighbor twice and another neighbor reported them three times. Nothing changed. The child is still in a home that is a nightmare. A home so bad that when someone called about them abusing their dogs, the dogs were removed, and the home called almost unlivable. We no longer live near them, but I dread the day I hear the news that something has happened.

I used to always think this was about little Judith Barsi, a little girl who appeared in dozens of commercials and tv shows for a few years in the 80's, best known for voicing main characters in "Land Before Time" and "All Dogs Go to Heaven."
Behind the scenes she suffered horribly and was let down by CPS and many others who knew about what was going on. Ultimately, her dad killed her and her mother (after threatening to do so for years, yes many people knew about the threats.) He shot himself a day or so later, before anyone found out what he did, after setting their bodies and the house on fire.
    She was 10.
Her gravestone actually says "our Concrete Angel.: but I found out her and her mom's graves were unmarked for over a decade, and the gravestones were put up by fans much much later, after this song came out

There was a family that lived next door to us when I was a kid. This was back in the 1960s and 70s. The father was an abusive, hard drinking, illiterate, brick layer. His wife would be his main target, and his oldest son got the next ration. The three youngest girls also got their share. That all ended when he dropped dead of a heart attack when I was away at Boot Camp in 1976.
At that time, just as it seems to be now, you didn't say anything about that stuff. You had to "get along with the neighbors", so you didn't want to rock the boat. And, you never knew what that guy might do if he found out you had turned him in....even though that's what he needed.
I have to live with that for the rest of my life.

Cussing everyone and wanting to fight others on the bus. I had to talk with him a few times. And they had to come out and talk to me about him. Then one morning his mom met me at his stop to ask why was i writing him up at school. I told her cause i cany deal with him and the way he was acting. Mom then tells me daddy was home now, he had been in prison for the last 10 years. The following year their grandmother got custody of them and the boy went back to being that good kid he use to be.

I believe Martina was singing about her niece and the gravestone is her niece’s stone.

It took me 2 yrs to watch this hole video because that little girl was me. I grew up knowing my mother telling me she hated me and never wanted me, she would lock me in a cold black cellar, hit me a board with nails in it, make me eat a hand full of baby aspirin, full the tube and dunk my head, she would tell me I was ugly and would never be married or have children. I would pray in the morning and ask God to please help me stay out of her way, then pray at night to thank him for helping me through another day. Now I'm a 61 yr old woman with my husband who we started dating at the age of 15, we had 4 beautiful successful children and 4 amazing grandchildren. I truly believe God brought all that into my life to help other young people who are going through the same or similar situations as I did and now has blessed me with my beautiful family that I told myself I would do the complete opposite of the way I was raised and God gave me the wisdom to be able to do exactly that. If God said if I could make your childhood better but you can't have the life I've blessed you with I would go through it all again.

Please watch Alyssa Lies by John Michael Carroll. It is a beautiful song. With a lot of meaning.

This actually happened to Martina Mcbrides' niece. That's her nieces tombstone you see at the end. The kids at the end were all angels that died from abuse. Including the boy.

I worked for CPS for 25 years and it is so heartbreaking. I have seen it and experienced too much in my lifetime.

I'm glad that this video was made because it made awareness of child abuse no innocent child deserves to be beat or deserves to die so I'm glad that I'm going to be a good father to my kids and I will never ever beat my children or hurt them in any way I will love them and cherish him till the day I die😥😥 thank you for reacting to this buddy God bless
