  • Over 35 years ago when I was a young Brit new to the U.S.A., I remember sitting in the immigration offices in New York City with THOUSANDS of other people for hours and hours on end.
Immigration procedures everywhere are notoriously cumbersome and Guatemala is no exception although I must confess my experience getting permanent residency in Guatemala was a LOT easier and infinitely more pleasant than it was in New York City.
In Guatemala you do have to be careful with those 'too-good-to-be-true' offers to 'accelerate' the immigration service for a special fee which you may hear from unscrupulous lawyers and facilitators.
In this video we'll chat about the five different types of permanent residency and how to choose a qualified Attorney to help you apply for your Visa or residency here in Guatemala?
Can I Apply for Guatemala Residency On My Own Without Speaking Spanish?
But first I hear you ask: "Could you apply for residency in Guatemala yourself?"
    Absolutely you can!
You might not get it right the first time but many people who understand some Spanish have successfully applied for and received their residency in Guatemala on their own.
If you're like me though and you don't understand the ins and outs of residency law in Guatemala and you have more important things to do with your time than stand in lines, then I would strongly encourage you to seek the help of a proven Guatemala residency Attorney.
In Guatemala There are Five Types of Permanent Residency:
    1) Permanent Residence by relative within the degrees of Law, of a Guatemalan person which means a relative who was born in Guatemala.
    2) Permanent residency for foreigners who have been temporary residents for a period equal to or greater than five years which applies to persons from countries that are not part of the Central American Federation.
    3) Permanent Residence for foreigners who have been married or in a common-law relationship with a Guatemalan person for one year or more.
    4) Permanent residency for those born in other Central American countries when they have been temporary residents for one year. That is to say Central Americans.
    5) Permanent residency as an annuitant or pensioner which is a person who lives on his/her income or retirement.
