"The Winner Takes It All" is one of ABBA's most famous songs, released in 1980 as part of their "Super Trouper" album. It was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the male members of the band, and the lead vocals were performed by Agnetha Fältskog, one of the female members.
The song is known for its emotional depth and introspective lyrics, which tell the story of a breakup from the perspective of the person who feels they've lost everything. It's often interpreted as a reflection on the real-life divorce between Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog, although both have stated that the song's lyrics are not directly autobiographical.
"The Winner Takes It All" has been praised for its powerful melody and poignant lyrics, and it became one of ABBA's biggest hits, reaching the top of the charts in several countries. It's since become one of their most enduring and beloved songs, frequently covered by other artists and featured in various films, TV shows, and musicals.

This is so much harder to take, when you hear the guys wrote the music and lyrics, from their own perspective, and just expected the girls to sing them. No matter how close to home they were. This was about her divorce from Bjorn, their kids were still young, and here she is singing about it to the world. So difficult, and still done so well.

What I’ve always been impressed with when it comes to ABBA is how well the songs are written lyrically. English is not their first language, yet their songs rhyme exactly where they should, and their songs tell stories. They are 100% fluent in a language that they weren’t raised with. That’s pretty amazing.

Check out more ABBA - Does Your Mother Know - SOS - Waterloo - Knowing Me Knowing You - Fernando - Mama Mia - Take a Chance on Me - Chiquitita ...... and many many more, remember that the style etc.....was 70's Way before MTV
They had a few personal song, both couples met got together and got married, after a few years of touring and having some difficulties both couple broke up and divorced, but still remained a group!
Same as the couples in Fleetwood Mac, seems like couples in bands breaking up but staying together makes for some good music!

The greatest song ever made about a divorce ! Just think Agnetha was singing it shortly after her own divorce. Guess who had been her husband? Bjōrn, the guy with the guitar who's playing and singing right next to her. Moreover, he is the author of the heartbreaking lyrics she's singing. By the way, after a little more time the two other members (Frida and Benny) will also divorce.

This is generally regarded as the "breakup song" about Agnetha (lead singer) and Bjorn's (guitar player) divorce. Bjorn wrote it and showed it to Agnetha, who reportedly started crying when she read the lyrics. Now, I don't know that I would be willing or able to sing lead vocals on a song that my ex wrote that pretty much described our breakup, but she did, and she nailed it, and you can definitely see the emotions in her eyes and on her face... they were real. Now, the other couple, Benny (piano player) and and Anni-Frid (Frida), divorced a bit later, and Frida sings lead vocals on what is regarded as their breakup song, "When All Is Said and Done", and that was another hit single for the group. The funny thing is, ABBA's best breakup song is one that they wrote and sang before either couple split up. It is called "Knowing Me, Knowing You".... and features vocals from both women and backing vocals from both guys, and the lyrics just seemed to foreshadow what was eventually going to happen just a few years later.

Abba was another great vocal group from the 70s but like The Bee Gees there was a danger in saying you liked them. I was in Jr High when they hit it big in the USA in 1976 with Dancing Queen. Admitting that you liked these 2 groups would get you beat up, especially if you were into rock. Disco was heating up and it was met with violent resistance. I’ll never forget the fights, especially if a guy was backing these groups. The girls could get away with it! The guys, not a chance!! I can admit it now I always liked them and my mom had the albums, she played them a lot!

ABBA in the begining two swedish couples, meet inb1969:
    Agnetha (blonde singer) &
    Björn (guitarist songwriter)
    Benny (pianist songwriter) &
    Anni Frida (brunette singer)
Agnetha & Björn married in 1971, with two Young childrens
Benny and Frida married in 1978, withouth own childrens
both couples separated before the breakup of ABBA in 1982:
Agnetha & Björn at end of 1978
Benny & Frida at begin 1981
"The winner takes it all" (1980)
is one of the Best Songs by ABBA
and the Most sad and emotional too
The best lyrics by the guitarist Björn
and the greatest performing with the amazing Interpretation
    of
the blonde singer Agnetha Fältskog and her soprano voice
The lyrics is a fiction about a divorce,
it is not about Their real life,
although it is obviously influenced by Their own experiences
and the realization of the legal divorce between Agnetha & Björn in the middle of 1980,
even though They were no longer a couple or lived together more than a year and half ago, at the end of 1978
In fact, the song was more nearly in time to the split of Benny & Frida as a couple, only a few months later
    "The winner takes it all"
return ABBA to the Top of the charts,
gives their eighth #1 in UK after almost two years and half
Also was the fourth and last Top10 to ABBA in U.S (pick at #8 in 1981)
, and #1 in US Adult Contemporary too
    "The winner takes it all"
was voted the Best ABBA song by the British fans,
and is the favourite ABBA song to the blonde singer Agnetha
and now in the new Voyage concerts at London that begins exactly one year before, the encore song is...
    "The winner takes it all"
ABBA have more than 20 worldwide hits,
Their biggest Is "Dancing Queen" (1976)
Their first worldwide hit was "Waterloo" (1974) when ABBA win the classic Eurovisión Song Contest in Brighton UK
(last April 6 was their 50th Anniversary and still now are homenages to ABBA all over Europe, specialy in Sweden and UK, and probably in Eurovisión)
My next suggestion is songs with the brunette singer Frida in lead voice
"Super Trouper" (the same outfits, the same album, the same TV perfomance in Germany 1980)
or 'Fernando" & "Money money money" (both 1976)
I wish to You a nice week
    my best regards from
    Buenos Aires , Argentina 🇦🇷
    South America

Thank you for another great video/reaction. Both female singers in ABBA had great voices which complimented each other well so sometimes they both did lead vocals & other times either one of them could be lead and the other in the background, usually with the guys singing background a bit too. If you want to hear a song where one of the guys (Bjorn) is more the lead - try watching/listening to "Does your Mother Know". A couple of the best where Frida (brunette female) is singing lead try: "Knowing me, Knowing you" or "Money, Money, Money".

But if you think that that's the end of a story oh no, these guys just came back with a force you would not believe and mainly thanks to Australia, who suddenly discovered them and took them to their hearts to such an extent that they put them on a film called Priscilla Queen of the desert. As the music and that was all it took to open things app in Hollywood and away, we go. But Wayne Britain took them to our hearts. After they won the Eurovision Song Contest, I think in 1976 I really I'm not sure and from that point on that was it. This was released in July 1980, the month Agnatha and Björn's divorce was finalised. They had been seperated since January 1979. Björn says that he does not usually write when drunk, but when he started this one, he opened a bottle of whisky. It was empty when he got to "The gods may throw the dice."
It is not autobiographic. Neither had found a new partner when they divorced. Even so, it is of course about their divorce. It is said that Agnetha wept when she read the lyrics.

'The Winner..." is one of the 3 most popular break up songs of Abba.Next one u may try 'Knowing me Knowing you" with Frida on the lead. And also 'SOS' with Agnetha on the lead. Both non 'disco' songs.Again for u there ...Is someone is aware of their albums they recorded,ABBA weren't a 'disco' band.Abba's music ground was pop/folk genre but expiremented with various styles even classical music..Within their whole carrer they've recorded 9-10 disco tunes 2 of them you have already reacted. They even did some hard glam rock stuff in their early discography btw. try

ABBA is the super group hailing from Sweden and stands for the first initials of their names:
    Agnetha (blonde singer)
    Benny (piano player)
    Bjorn (guitarist)
    Annifrid (Frida - redheaded
    singer).
This song was written about the breakup / divorce of Agnetha and Bjorn and adds to the emotional delivery of the sing.
Frida and Agnetha have the most beautiful voices and harmonies, and their Swedish accents add to the beauty of their delivery. Other songs I recommend are FERNANDO, MAMMA MIA, SOS and KNOWING ME KNOWING YOU. You can't go wrong with ABBA - they are pure genius.
