Wow, this was uploaded September of 2009. Crazy to think this was before the Switch, PS4, XBONE, Wii U, and even the 3DS! I was in first semester of my 10th grade year of high school when Alpha dropped this classic rant. Man, how time flies.
At least Nero had white hair lol jk. In all seriousness, Nero's only fault is his motivation. You know who I'm talking about. Other that, his character is good.
Roxas theNobody Pretty much, if DMC4 had more development and less of it's element dropped thanks to Cashcom cutting the development time and budget; it's possible Nero could have been a better character. I can at least say he's better than Donte, because Donte is a bigger trainwreck and it's not even his non "Animu, weeb-shit" look that's wrong.
You are correct on a lot of your points. The main reason for 4 is that they didn't want to revert Dante to a rookie again and it becomes that weird clash between story and gameplay, same with MGS2. But honestly I'm reminded of how many times Samus lost her abilities or some shit like that. Its not that hard honestly. And with Dante it was much easier to do since he doesn't carry all of his previous Devil Arms. And the Devil Arms are just trophies for a successful kill anyway so him not having them is not that big of a deal. But the overall problem is for how much they tried to send off Dante, Nero's story went no where. Honestly when you think back on Nero's entire story it was just so forgettable and the plot just wasn't the same. Compare it to the final battles with Characters like Mundus and Arkham. It felt like the whole game just built up to those battles and they were just satisfying. Mostly revolving around the themes of familial love and how it relates to Dante. Nero got a shitty romance, mood swings and some vague connections to Vergil which contradicted the trailer. Especially since the trailer had me convinced that Nero would turn evil and be the main antagonist in 5......................if it ever came out. This also goes into just games in general so sorry if this sounds wordy. But videogame sequels are supposed to be continuing events. Novels and tv shows can get away with that. But with games you can have them happen at any time and a fan can easily judge each installment on its own merits as though it were the same story being retold in a way. It makes the gaming world much more wider in scope and since these characters kind of don't have a concept of time you can literally not worry about aging and such can make a new game when its needed. With MGS it made be a little difficult since it talks a lot about legacy and genetics. But if you apply that same reasoning I don't think people will complain on why Solid Snake is always 30-something.
Devil May Cry 4 is my first Devil May Cry game I played. I fucking loved it, and I thought Nero was badass. But there are people who love Dante and people who love Nero. I think Nero is badass, but if you like Dante more thats understandable.
After replaying DMC4 again recently. I can say that Nero is an all around OK character. His development is short but tbh its a DMC game so character development isn't really a big deal. So long as he's badass, which he was, he's cool to me. I think my only issue with Nero is the limited use of his Devil Bringer and Devil trigger. DMC3 Dante could do sooooo many things with Devil Trigger. Hell he could even fly. Nero...he just hits harder, faster and regenerates health...yaaaay. While yes Dante had the similar problem in DMC4 with his watered down Devil Trigger, his power up was way more apparent than Nero's. Oh and the fact that The devil bringer can ABSORB DEMONIC WEAPONRY INTO ITSELF is such a badass technique that is barely touched upon in this game. I feel like Nero's first debut was good enough but his potential as a character is way way higher.
What's wrong with nero? I never had a problem with games when they change the main character for a bit of fresh combat. I also loved smashing demons faces into the ground like a badass, not being old helped aswell.
To be honest, Nero was always a great character. His outfit and hair design was a little bit questionably. He kind of looked too similar to Dante though lol. But his fighting style and controls were superb. But I honestly couldn't stand playing as Dante because how they made him basically a slow powerhouse. Also JOHNNY. YONG. BOSCH.
I wouldn't mind that since 3 was really really awesome and explained alot more of Dante's origins. I'd like it to take place sometime after 3 or so since i think Dante might be to young if they go before the 3rd game
True, I didn't get the character development I would've liked from Nero...but the most logical explanation for him being there,,,is all the hints Capcom threw that he's Vergil's son... White hair, can control yamato, Said the swrod gave him POWER...and Vergil said he needed more power, darker in personality than Dante, is 17...Vergil was 18 in manga...Dante seems around 34-35 in 4. Do the math on that and Vergil could easily be Nero's father. Not to mention Nero fights Bianco Angelo throughout the game. Nelo Angelo anyone? Ahem. Nero...Nelo. Dante says Yamato has to stay in the family...then gives it to Nero by the end. Multiple times, Sanctus mentions that he inherited Sparda's power.... Nero was an orphan raised by Kyrie's family. Alice from the DMC3 manga could be the mother...since she had interaction with Vergil, wore knuckle rings just like Nero and Vergil called her a whore...Sanctus in the DMC4 novel said Nero's mother was a prostitute (least that's what I've heard, the novel is in japanese only). Now as to WHY Capcom would introduce Nero? It seems like in Japanese culture, youth is widely praised...and when a character gets to a certain age...they move on to another or make prequels...drives me crazy.
makes me wonder how old Dante was in dmc2. since demons don't really get "old", he's probably in his late 80's by then, as it seemed to be in a more futuristic setting than the other games.
i can see your point in bringing in nero to the franchise to keep things from getting stale. my only issue with that is they made him an exact copy of dante from DMC3 cept nero is kinda wishy washy, but they both act damn near identical with that exception. now bringing in vergil made sense since he was the polar opposite of dante and was also more complex since he was both good and bad
yeah they did kinda get rid of him quickly considering what kinda ties he has to the series. but there will undoubtedly be a 5th. the 4th game sold over a million units so thats a guarantee right there. and it got rated well from everyone so that was another plus, just needs less nero and more dante
watched like 4 of your rants now dude, agree with everything, you should do one about the alien vs predator game for the xbox 360 i literally just bought it and was playin through what i thought was the 3rd level (as Alien) and the game story ended ..... i know theirs 3 playble racesin that game ..but seriously they just expect me to kill 9 enemies and game over? so yeah id love to hear you views on that. anyways loving the rants!
I liked Nero. He brought a different mechanic and different combos. He also continues the bloodline of Sparda and raises questions about why he is of spardas bloodline.
He was defeated by Mundus at the end of Dmc3 (secret ending) turned into Nelo Angelo (Dmc1) and brought back as Neros devil trigger Dmc4 but Vergil is back anyway ( Devil may cry 4 special edition summer 2015) look up the trailer! :)
@AlphaOmegaSin I can see your point but Vergil looked like Dante as well (being his brother and all). It makes sense that Nero looks like that since he's Vergil's son.
@TheEgotasticRipoff Changed things up a bit though. They should add Nero's "devil bringer" in the next installment of DMC, being well...DMC. Well the "snatch" ability at least. Not a lot of people are taking kindly to the reboot though. Myself? I'm actually kinda looking forward to it, and how it turns out.
@rrwryan But they could have done that with his character alone, they could have deleped him as a kid and give him a life changing experience that bridges him into being the cocky laid back guy he was. Like if he beat a boss that he struggled with then he got confident enough to get cocky. His appearance was just a self insert of the developer at Ninja Theory.
This is a theory, but no one is sure, Capcom hasn't let any more info loose about the possible connection. And with them switching gears with the new DMC game, we may never find out.
I played 1 & 2 so far and the goofy fighting game version they made which was just....blech. I'm not to sure why they haven't made anew installment yet honestly. Capcom has alot of awesome franchises i'd like to see them bring back from NES and SNES even. I'll have to get around to playing Onimush a 3 then if it's the best of the series. Currently playing through Lost Odyssey at the moment :D
while i like dante a whole lot more as a character, i enjoy playing as nero a lot more in this game. The game is just balanced to favor nero imo. As Nero i beat the entire bloody palace while as dante i could barely make it to stage 40.
alphaomegasin is right, the company that made dmc 4 could have easily just given dante the arm and use it as a different fighting style like his other ones. They even could call it the same exact name. The whole thing with nero was " a jacked up notion of fare play".
@TheEgotasticRipoff All I know is that Nero is /supposedly/ Vergil's son (Which explains why Yamato was drawn to him in my mind) and that Dante figures this out later on in the plot. :P I haven't played all of DMC4, but I'm such a nerd I read ahead on the walkthrough. XD
I wish capcom would reconsider giving the Dmc project to N.T. if aint broke dnt fix it. what age is dante in the new game ? I was thinking like 15 or 16 yrs in dmc 3 i think hes 24 ?
Raiden and Nero were similar attempts with their respective stories. It was an attempt to add an element of drama into the games, and with grounded and solid characters like Dante and Solid Snake, turning them into emotional fighters simply wouldn't work.
in mgs they alway added somebody new in everygame and most people don't know solid snake is a clone of naked snake so in mgs1 snake mgs2 raiden mgs3 naked snake/big boss and in mgs4 they kinda brought everybody back into one ultimate series of everybody
lol i had to give him an annoying goofy voice, but couldn't figure out what to do with Dantes without making him sound goofy. so just went with my own lol
only thing he has really thats cool is his arm, thats about it. personally they coulda just given the arm ability to dante somehow and bam no point in having nero lol
Well what if they make a DMC game after the upcoming failure and make Nero die near the end and Dante would obtain the devil brigger(whatever the fuck it is) and Dante could use it that would be fucking badass but then he's just gonna discard it just like the other weapons
2:13 Umm.... Maybe they wanted to use Dante but why would he be with Kyrie, why he would be in order, why he would want to avenge some old guy, and then they made Nero, the character that looks just like Dante, but younger.
Yeah....DMC2 does suck and I am gradually still playing it in a painful matter to this day of owning the 5th anniversary trilogy collection and the HD collection for Xbox One. But, at least they did the special edition for DMC4....that is worth it now with Lady and her bazooka. Love it!
If nero truly had sparda's blood coursing in his veins he wouldnt even use the Devil. B gauntlet , Devil.B gauntlet the name explains what it does already , whoever where's it is enchantanted with demon power , with Sparda's sword u take on a form Sparda 's power itself and the knowledge of Yamaoto . wiki info...
lol its cool. I liked virgil alot cause he was like the opposite side of Dante but with all the same skill and power making him really cool to play as. but nero? nope, just a silly little wanna be really. if they gave him more his own look or attitude or whatever i won't mind in future titles.
and virgil...nero is original, sure virgil is powerful but the fact that he can resurrect yamamato and then redirect virgil's demon form is very unique...really when you think about it, nero's personality is alot alike dante
@TheEgotasticRipoff not before Dante's concept becomes stale or importance skewed. Dante doesnt even have any motivation to do anything, he just does things... I cant tell if thats what make him cool or just makes him 1Dimentional.
Well the reason why capcom made Nero was that they want a connection with Vergil because i mean why is Vergils Yamato there for just for show but just to say Nero is Vergils son is do I know this just looking back at things before dmc 3 ever happend.
They could have written him in as a believable character in the story with the whole outcast, demonized resident of a church protecting a girl. The problem was the fact that he was Dante. I would have liked him as a different looking/acting character. Maybe he could have been the starter guy to give you a feel for the game. Get a bit of the inside story on the matter, then follow Dante for the rest of the game and have that little glimpse of info that Dante doesn't to make some intensity.
Heres how i see it. Nero is a new character that was introduced to the franchise in order to bridge together DMC3 and DMC2(because 2 is the last one when you put it in storyline terms). With Nero you get cool catch phrases, an arm that can make any enemy your bitch, and the voice of Ichigo from Bleach(no seriously, same voice actor). With Dante you get your guns and a sword and thats it. I like playing as Dante more cause its challenging, the game isnt a pushover like it is when playing as Nero.
@TheEgotasticRipoff I don't know any other method here to decide wether or not they like the new guy. Maybe have the order switched up as Dante has the main story and the new guy has interjected levels of his own but still giving Dante the majority. If Nero was the background guy, people cant judge him unless his character was motivating. Then you get into the lady treatment. I'm sure lady would be awesome to actually play as, heck even as a guest in Bayonetta, but not her own game.
well by your logic that because in devil may cry 3 since virgle walks looks controls and even fights similar to dante that he shouldn't be in the game's either but he is a subsequent necessary character as well as nero is in my opinion besides nero's complete backstory and almost everything about him is shrouded in mystery you don't know why he has a devil arm you dont know where his fighting styles come from.
I don't know maybe he is suppose to be there to bring back Virgil or something. I mean seriously I'm not saying he's a clone or something. Anyway I don't mind having Nero around but maybe they can make him a bit less like dante. They kinda did that with Virgil, a badass character like Dante, but is also an awesome character in his own right, I guess. Plus, I thought he was only gonna replace Dante in DMC4 only and Dante comes back in the next DMC. (his voice still kicks ass...imo...)
And if it wasnt for the demonic gauntlet on his arm Nero would be a normal (Human) swordsman! and even then he still needs a Demonic sword to even have a Devil Trigger Dante on the other hand....
Looking back on this now EVERYONE loves nero.
Hmm, I still like V, Vergil and Dante over Nero after through beating DMC5 today. Nero just gets angry waaaaay too much.
Remember when everyone thought Nero was a shitty replacement for Dante? Then we got Donte

Nero portrayed the human side quite well an fought for a really good reason love.
At least Nero had white hair lol jk.

Travis Touchdown Dmc Dante is better than Nero

Hmmmm, I'd personally say I like DMC3 Special edition more because that was the first time I got to play as Virgil and it holds a special place to me.

The problem with JYB, is he can only make 2 different voice types, and he gave 70% of the characters the same angry ichigo sounding voice.
hahaha When he said all the DMC games were badass I was waiting for him to mention DMC2. I like to pretend that game doesn't exist.
i am back 10 years later lol

Wow i stumbled on this rant video and honestly laughed my ass off threw the whole beginning of this lol great video
I love the Pre-Alpha videos :)

@MrLPWraith "Hinted" not confirmed. It was "hinted" that Johnny young Bosch voiced Nero but it could only be "confirmed" in the credits or bio.
watched like 4 of your rants now dude, agree with everything, you should do one about the alien vs predator game for the xbox 360 i literally just bought it and was playin through what i thought was the 3rd level (as Alien) and the game story ended ..... i know theirs 3 playble racesin that game ..but seriously they just expect me to kill 9 enemies and game over? so yeah id love to hear you views on that. anyways loving the rants!

Le gasp no way :o
Thanks bro
See the trailer!? Vergil- I NEED MORE POWER... AGIAN!!!
yeah but i didnt really like dmc though. the most recent game
Did someone forget to tell alpha Dante is playable after you beat the game with nero?
There is 1 thing nero has going for him hes the only reason why vergil will come back.
before capcom rebooted devil may cry nero's main story line was going to be about finding more about his father vergil
The funny thing is I don't think we're going to see Nero ever again
He's back in DMC5. Nero got better, but he still acts too angry, especially when others get in his way.
the coolest moments in DM4 are when there is Dante
I'd like to know just how and were does Nero fit into Sparda's bloodline, thats what i want to know
I know this is old to some fans but capcom had made public a Vergil is Nero father and if you play Devil May Cry 4 again it makes a lot of since
@AlphaOmegaSin I can see your point but Vergil looked like Dante as well (being his brother and all). It makes sense that Nero looks like that since he's Vergil's son.
@TheEgotasticRipoff
Changed things up a bit though. They should add Nero's "devil bringer" in the next installment of DMC, being well...DMC. Well the "snatch" ability at least. Not a lot of people are taking kindly to the reboot though. Myself? I'm actually kinda looking forward to it, and how it turns out.
@TheEgotasticRipoff But the fact that DMC has a wider universe to explore then just Dante in line to stop the next wave of irelevant bosses.
Ooo Just hate an idea. What if they made a game based on the story of Sparda's Rebellion?
Dante: are you trying to cosplay as me Nero: no! im trying to be you
playing with nero brought life back to dmc series
@freebooster
nero at the time seemed pretty bad but now seems like a damn god send compared to what ninja theory is doing to poor dante :(
i don't remember where i heard this but devil may cry 5 might be another prequel. But that was 1 or 2 years ago.
This is a theory, but no one is sure, Capcom hasn't let any more info loose about the possible connection. And with them switching gears with the new DMC game, we may never find out.
so was nero the playable character? or is he an antagonist
@TheEgotasticRipoff Mess of a character? Like Dante?
You rock at debating I'm almost good as you you convinced me to like Dante cause I liked Nero at first
I played 1 & 2 so far and the goofy fighting game version they made which was just....blech. I'm not to sure why they haven't made anew installment yet honestly. Capcom has alot of awesome franchises i'd like to see them bring back from NES and SNES even. I'll have to get around to playing Onimush a 3 then if it's the best of the series. "Can't they just resurrect Vergil?" They have!!! Dmc4 special edition! Vergil returns summer 2015!! XD
Well, Nero is Vergil's son.
alphaomegasin is right, the company that made dmc 4 could have easily just given dante the arm and use it as a different fighting style like his other ones.
XD

@Stungun48 im too sure about that ,when was on wiki, i saw no cannon info saying that vergil had a son.
OmegaSin? Dante vs Duke Nukem Who wins?
What about the new Devil May Cry? The new and "improved" Emo Dante???
Raiden and Nero were similar attempts with their respective stories. It was an attempt to add an element of drama into the games, and with grounded and solid characters like Dante and Solid Snake, turning them into emotional fighters simply wouldn't work.
in mgs they alway added somebody new in everygame and most people don't know solid snake is a clone of naked snake so in mgs1 snake mgs2 raiden mgs3 naked snake/big boss and in mgs4 they kinda brought everybody back into one ultimate series of everybody
@KingNazaru Dante is Nero's uncle... Nero is Virgil's son. Capcom confirmed it a while back.
The difference between Nero and Raiden is that we knew we would play as Nero, while we were kind of "surprised" of the addition of Raiden.
lol i had to give him an annoying goofy voice, but couldn't figure out what to do with Dantes without making him sound goofy. so just went with my own lol
theres a rumor going around that ninja theory the ppl who made (heaveny sword) is gonna make dmc5,if you guys dont believe me look it up
only thing he has really thats cool is his arm, thats about it. personally they coulda just given the arm ability to dante somehow and bam no point in having nero lol

Umm....
Love it!
didnt like his story but his skillset allowed endless combos. i could stay in the air for ages with him
@SUNNYRAINWIND I thought Nero was Vergil's reincarnation.
@MrTravismccullough
i completely agree
wait u complained about Nero crying whn in The first game Dante clearly cried for trish evn if it was breif.
@TheEgotasticRipoff Lady should have cameo'd in Bayonetta. Just to introduce her gameplay, and the story suits her more then dMC did imho.
lol i liked nero, his moment of saying go blow yourself after the big heartfelt speech of evil from the villian (i forget his name)
At least the 5th game made us care for Nero in the end
Nero could have been done better and his story(as Vergil's son) could have been elaborated on some more
He isnt Vergil son
I downloaded DMC: Devil May Cry and i really tried to enjoy it. I couldnt have been more optimistic about it and i still have trouble finishing it.
@TheEgotasticRipoff We're talking DMC here. Not shadows of the damned.
And the beanie makes its debut!
lol its cool.
1:17 to 1:20 equals funniest part of the video
@TheEgotasticRipoff not before Dante's concept becomes stale or importance skewed. Dante doesnt even have any motivation to do anything, he just does things... I cant tell if thats what make him cool or just makes him 1Dimentional.
@KryptoWolf
fanboy radar is off the charts all of a sudden
@itsallgoodfamz
yes the pattern of capcom making stupid choices for an awesome franchise :P
5:58 i agree but what i think is they shouldave brought sparda and eva back
that laugh at the beginning had me rolling
when playing this game, I think the writer and developers were fans of Bleach at the time
You realize its implied that Nero is Vergil's son right?
Is it bad that I like Nero, especially in dmc5.
Nero is better in dmc5, but he still acts too angry. I understand he lost his arm, but he gets angry at other characters getting in his way.
well by your logic that because in devil may cry 3 since virgle walks looks controls and even fights similar to dante that he shouldn't be in the game's either but he is a subsequent necessary character as well as nero is in my opinion
besides nero's complete backstory and almost everything about him is shrouded in mystery you don't know why he has a devil arm you dont know where his fighting styles come from.
@TheSorrow696 Actually it kinda does since Nero is Vergil's son.
Nero got an upgrade in DMC V
The more I think about it, the more I wonder is new Dante is our punishment for bad mouthing Nero.
