  • There are so many things to consider when caring for small seedlings but also so much to be gained. Here is a tutorial of repotting them.

    Hello
My name is Kevin, I live in England 🇬🇧 in a county called Derbyshire. I belong to a Orchid Society, which is known as the Sheffield District Orchid Society, which is based in Sheffield South Yorkshire. I know you live in the USA in Florida. I believe and I often hear you say that you have been giving talks to other societies up and down the United States. I was wondering if you would be interested on doing a talk on zoom to a society i.e. our society in England, obviously they would be a time difference, but if you could let me know your time difference between England and the United States then I could have a rough idea on the time lapse between us and if it was possible.
Thank you for your Orchid videos, they are very interesting and have lots of information in them. Please keep up the good work and all the best for the future in the Orchid world.

I just bought a bunch of seedlings, around the same size as those in this video, and this video is most timely for me. The plants have arrived from a warmer place 85/75F to my place where its a bit cold (70/60F). A few of my seedlings have outgrown their pots, and a few are still inside the pots. Many of them are in coconut coir. Spring season has started here, so maybe new growths will start soon. I am thinking about giving seedlings atleast a month to get adjusted to the new environment before attempting repot. I have got largish chunks of bark, which I will break into smaller pieces, along with medium charcoal. My doubts are- A few of the seedlings seem to have had new roots in recent past, so would they put out any new ones soon? How many times do cattleya seedlings grow new roots? And another Q? Do you water immediately after repot? A light drizzle or a full soak? And how frequently do you fertilize the seedlings? And does the question of fresh root growths gain more significance if the type of medium is changing, e.g. from coconut coir in which roots are embedded to bark vs from bark to bark?

Wow!! That’s a lot to answer. I would repot everything now. Cattleyas produce roots at different times depending on the species used and will produce them at the same time relative to every new growth. A minority produce growths and roots more than once a year. The best media to use is that which the roots were in. Roots adapt to what they grow into. That is not always possible and they’ll make it regardless. I don’t like coir much because when it rots it does so very quickly. When I repot the plants go onto the bench and get water and fertilizer with everything else.
Let me know what I forgot and good luck!

When you water those will you soak...for how long? Or will you just run water through several times?
    Thanks

I just water them from the top with the other orchids. Very small seedlings (just out of flask) get a heavy misting almost every day.

@@wadesorchids7219 that's what I've been doing. I have a couple of large ones I let soak a bit. I mist then have a fan running till the mist drys. Thanks

Hi Mike. I have a Facebook account but I get on very seldom. It started with all the politics but I realized that Facebook is extremely manipulative and I’m happier without it. My web site, www.wadesorchids. com, has contact info. I’ll be happy to talk about anything.
