    Never seen one of these with a “motivational” bit like your speech at the end. Your video gets 10/10. Which is something I’ve never said/given out before. To any video. Ever.

      Wow thanks so much! I’m glad that part made an impact. I really love reflecting on my work and seeing what I could improve next time and appreciating what went well. We work too hard on these things to just move on.

    I've been working with wood since 1976 and am mostly disgusted by people who make conference tables that sell for tens of thousands of dollars because their motivations seem mostly about money. I love working with wood and even enjoy sanding a flat surface over and over again with progressively finer grit. Now I came across your channel and I must say, I am proud of you. Your dedication to perfection in form and function and the amount of actual love of the craft you put into this project was truly inspiring even to an old timer like me. Thank you for that. The decisions you made on this project led to a truly beautiful and unique finished piece and you earned and deserve every dollar you were paid no matter the amount. Craftsmen who love their craft more than the money they are paid for practicing it are dwindling in number, you give me heart. 🥰

      Wow. I’m completely blown away. I started this channel hoping to inspire people the way I’ve been inspired by seeing the work of others on TH-cam. So it really makes it worth the dozens of hours I’ve committed already to hear things like this. I’d be lying if I said I’m not concerned about money, I am. But you’re right about me that the reason I do this is because I love the work. The reason I care about money is because I want to be able to afford spending my time making furniture and still support my family. My hourly rate on that table divided out ends up being about $16/hr. But it’s one of my best woodworking accomplishments so far and all the attention it has gotten here is worth way more than that to me. Thank you for watching and for saying such kind things. It helps me keep going on this journey. Happy New Year!

    Lemons to lemonade - brother you killed that build! To accentuate an otherwise overlooked area was genius. That takes it from craftsmanship to artistry. Again, great job.

      Thanks so much for that. I consider that high praise. It’s definitely unconventional to spend a lot of time on the bottom side of a table but it solved my problem and elevated the final result, showing my client that I care about the whole piece, not just the immediately visible parts.

    When I have to flip something that large over I run a strap around the piece and use an old block and tackle to lift one side and then sift it (without jumping up on the table) and then lower it. It takes a lot of the weight out of the equation and is a bit safer than my old way (similar to yours). You can pick up the block and tackle at a yard sale, flea market, etc. for less than $20. Your setup would work much better than mine - you have a higher ceiling.
    BTW - very creative solution for addressing the bottom, it actually looks better than the top.

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a great idea. I will definitely be looking into an alternative next time I need to make something this big. Thanks for the compliment. And I agree it looks better than the top! Haha! Some folks were asking why I didn’t show that many photos of the top side and it’s because I just wasn’t that impressed with it myself. There’s some nice crotch figure near a couple of the bowties but otherwise it’s not terribly interesting.

    2 things.
    1. beautiful work. i love the idea of kintsugi, and would have loved to see more of it.
    2. call the contest, no one beats this.

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha. Thank you so much. Thats a great point about kintsugi - I didn’t really show much of the epoxy areas I fixed, just the “lake” in the end shots. I think I shied away because while it was an interesting touch, I’m an epoxy newb and didn’t nail the timing on my swirling and it faded into clumps. As for #2, I’m grateful for that but I’m looking forward to seeing what others try as well.

    Awesome result! I love that the icing of this cake is on the bottom. "Hiding" that gorgeous organically flowing design on the bottom of the table is so much more of a statement than had it been showcased on the top. This is so inspiring. I will most likely never make a 12 foot table but I can take this concept and hide delightful details within otherwise simple designs for a subtly powerful impact. You got an immediate sub for that.

      @@sturdyboneswoodworking thanks for the heads up! I have only played around with power carving minimally and can see how time can get away from a person on something the scale of that table. I’ve been very reserved with the carver and so it definitely has been a time sucker in my limited experience. The design elements on this build of yours came together so well. Great balance overall, highlights that didn’t compete with each other, and a color contrast that I was surprised worked so well together. Really masterfully done.

    After probably watching well over 1000 videos on TH-cam this is if not the first, it’s one of the few times I’ve commented on a video. I do give the thumbs up often though. Great job and nice editing on the video as well. One question. On the epoxy pour did u go in there with a stick to produce the swirls while it was drying or did it just come out that way? Again, nice job 👍🏻

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow I’m honored to get a comment then! Thank you! It’s interesting you should ask about the swirl. Maybe other metallic pigments act differently but with this pigment and epoxy at least there is apparently about a 30 minute window in which if you stir it the swirls will actually remain. In many of the spots where I stirred it though after the 5hr mark, they dissipated and went back to being blobs. So I’m still learning on that score.

      Thanks so much! I am very blessed with my huge barn and property out in the country. So thankful for my shop. I’m not positive what you mean about slotting the bow ties. I just chopped it straight down to the bottom. But I did give the bottom edges a little chamfer to allow the glue somewhere to go. That’s a skill I haven’t nailed down yet - getting the perfect amount of glue so it holds without creating an air pocket and making my bow tie act like a piston, preventing it from going in all the way. I’ll keep practicing.

      Great question. I didnt show how I mounted the top to the base very closely but I accounted for a certain amount of movement laterally across the table in the mounting brackets and recesses you can see when the bottom side is up. The top was kiln dried in a vacuum kiln so even if it picked up a bit of MC while it was sitting it should have every chance to equalize now that it’s indoors in AC. Then I made complementary but undersized mounting plates from the same red oak which were also rabbeted so they’d fit in but allow for wood movement. The mounting plates had counterbored and oversized holes also to permit wood movement. And the each leg got 8 1/4-20 bolts with washers to hold it on. I didn’t use any c-channel. The hope is since the entire slab top was kiln dried for several weeks in that larger shop’s vacuum kiln, and since it’ll live in a climate controlled environment,it won’t really move very much over time.

      Thank you! I’m using a Canon 5d Mark III. And yeah it was really fun. I’m looking forward to working with it again soon.

    Of course the table build is awesome, but I have a question about the 2-legged chair you’re showing at 1:30: where I can find more details about this style? Cursory google search did not yield any useful lead…

      I’d search George Nakashima cantilevered conoid chair or just Nakashima woodworkers. He did a number of pieces that incorporated similar design features. Though I’m not sure. If there are writings where they go into detail about it. Maybe his book Soul of a Tree he talks about out it some. Not sure.

    Great build but did you just say "Thanks to my CrossFit coaches who helped me to learn how to lift *without* hurting myself"??? That's just not CrossFit. 😂

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hahaha. Yeah and I managed not to hurt myself for a long time but had to “retire” when all the overhead stuff started affecting my shoulders and making it hard to sleep on my side. I really miss it sometimes. But when I need to deadlift or squat I’ve still got it. 😁 thanks for watching!

      How do you know someone does CrossFit? Oh don’t worry. They will find a way to tell you (first time I’ve heard it in a woodworking video on TH-cam 😜)

    I just came from a Blacktail video where he used spray-shellac to protect areas from staining, sanding it out after touch ups were complete. Might be worth a test??

    But I think that would have been awesome flipped over after all that carving ! Either glass or epoxy to make flat surface.
    Just saying all that xtra hidden

      Thank you for watching! And all I’ll say right now is that I’ve been inspired by my giant carving experiment and this won’t be the last time you see me working with this style and that next time it will be more visible.

    I understand the thrick with the water spraying but when I was apprentice, my boss told me to never do this on oak because of tannins that could come up. Did you ever had any problem like this spraying water on oak?

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I suppose you could get some odd staining if it was a lot of water. There is a shot of it drying after I sprayed and that took about 20 minutes probably so maybe just not long enough to work any tannins to the surface. Is staining the issue your boss might have had in mind for why not to set it down to pop the grain? It makes a big difference in how smooth you can get the finish so I guess it’s a risk that’s worth it?

      @woodvibecreation 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sturdyboneswoodworking yes sure. I might try it then. Maybe if it's just a light pass of water, like you say it dries fast and the tannins can't come up. I'll make some test the day I'll start working with oak

    Very disappointing that that beautiful wood used for the legs was covered with black stain. So sorry to see.😢

    • @sturdyboneswoodworking
      @sturdyboneswoodworking  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand. It’s a polarizing look. Some love the black poly and some hate it. I personally don’t love how the color of red oak looks and think the contrast between the black base and the top keeps the focus on the top of the piece where it belongs.
