  • I have previously uploaded Keely Smith's excellent version of "I Wish You Love," but here is another terrific version recorded by Gloria Lynne in 1963 on the Everest label, reaching #28 on the Billboard Hot 100, #10 on the Easy Listening, and #3 on Cashbox Magazine's R&B chart in 1964. It was included in the LP of the same name which is available on CD on Essential Media. The song was originally written in French by Charles Trenet and the English lyric by Albert Beach. I do not own the right to the song, audio, or images contained in this video. The sound recording is administered by IODA. No copyright infringement is intended. The purpose of this upload is for viewer enjoyment and education not for monetary gain.

This is the definitive version of this classic song. That honeyed voice, that phrasing, she really knew the best way to showcase the music and lyrics. Gloria Lynne never gained the fame she deserved, but this song will always bring her to our hearts.❤

I can remember sitting on the couch would you believe we lived in Harlem? We had a pink loveseat. Don’t forget the plastic that was on it.😅 my godmother and my mom were bookings. I was little but my godmother made me learn Nancy, Miss Lynn, and for some reason today this song is just in my spirit. I don’t have either one of them walking this earth. I’m telling you I thank you thank you Meme for making me learn the words to this and I think My Mom for sitting back and laughing and clapping Harlem USA family memories. They always wish me luck. I think I got it now.😢❤

For me this song represents the quintessential signature song of Ms. Lynn ....some may argue other wise. Not only is this a beautiful song in and of itself but Ms. Lynn's masterful renditioning is for me....flawless. Perhaps it's because it was the first recording I fell in love as a kid and she happened to the one singing it....... To die and part is a less evil; but to part and live, there, there is the torment.....but I wish you love

NO LIE, my mother had a passion for the old female Jazz and Blues singers: Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson et al., but when I was 2 Yrs old this was her favorite song, I Wish You Love, specifically the Gloria Lynne version despite her affection for Nancy Wilson. As for the "NO LIE" part, I learned how to sing this song, start to finish, without missing a single lyric, BEFORE I COULD TALK. I was singing this song before I was talking.

And I knew nothing about Ms. Lynne, then read the Wikipedia article and was appalled to read that she, like so many others, was exploited by rotten music executives and "left penniless." I remember hearing this beautiful recording on rock'n'roll radio in 1964, mixed in with the Beatles Stones Animals and the rest who dominated the airwaves at the time. It seems music was less segregated by genre back then -- Nancy Wilson, Theola Kilgore, Peggy Lee and so many others somehow managed to get airtime during the British invasion. To this day, I'm glad they did; they left an indelible mark on my musical tastes.

Goodbye, no use leading with our chins
This is where our story ends
    Never lovers, ever friends
Goodbye, let our hearts call it a day
    But before you walk away
    I sincerely want to say
I wish you bluebirds in the spring to give your heart a song to sing
And then a kiss but more than this
    I wish you love
And in July a lemonade to cool you in some leafy glade
I wish you health and more than wealth
    I wish you love
My breaking heart and I agree that you and I could never be
So with my best, my very best, I set you free
I wish you shelter from the storm
A cozy fire to keep you warm
But most of all when snowflakes fall
    I wish you love
My breaking heart and I agree that you and I could never be
So with my best, my very best, I set you free
I wish you shelter from the storm
A cozy fire to keep you warm

I remember her from my teen yesrs. I realize that some of the greatest singers csn be underrated because
of poor management. We loved Ms. Lynn and thought of her as one of the very best!!

So frikkin true @boomerang905 I'm a musician and I've seen it first hand. Some mediocre person will get a break and some super-talent won't. So these voices that get remembered as "the best" of a certain era are not necessarily better than someone who just was unlucky enough to have a shitty career. Sucks.

Nice. I grew up hearing the Charles Trenet version: "Que reste t'il de nos amours".

Never heard of Gloria Lynne until this very moment. I'm a tail end baby boomer and only knew this song from Barbra Streisand's 1966 recording. Regardless, Ms Lynne's version is delightful. It has a sensuous, jazzy feel that Ms Streisand's lacks BUT, that said, Streisand's take on it is still my favorite. Please don't hate me.

You have a right to opinion but Gloria happens to be the real deal not taking nothing from Barbara but I'll see Gloria gives her run for her 💰

Gorgeous. I discovered Gloria in the 1990s. She did some very fine jazz albums for the Muse and HighNote labels at that time.

Gloria Lynne was a great singer who often Gigged at the 'Parisian Room' Jazz Club on Washington & La Brea in Los Angeles, 'This recording hopefully will be 'Remastered' sometime in the future 'as it's a 'Gloria Lynne Classic' !!!

This should be the greatest breakup song ever. Saying , we didn’t work out but you’re something special and I wish you the absolute best…
“My breaking heart and I agree that you and I could never be, so with my best, my very best I set you free”
