I wish people that react would actually take that into consideration that she wrote this song and it was meant to be personal, soft and sung with with love from her heart. Whitney just belted out meaningless lyrics.

This song was wrote to the guy you see at the end of the video. Dolly was leaving his show and she decided to write a farewell song for him. Dolly was born and raise about 70 miles away as a crow flies from my hometown! We're all Hillbillies and so proud of it! Ps Dolly thought Whitney's version was sung great and she told Whitney that the song should belong to her now!!

When Whitney sings this beautiful song I’m stunned by her vocals. When Dolly sings, I simply cry. Dolly can act the hell out of a song, it’s like she’s singing just for you. I’ll always love you, Dolly. 🦋

When asked about her decision to allow Whitney to do the cover, Dolly said "When I sang the song, I took it to the bank -- twice. When Whitney sang it, I BOUGHT the bank!!" Every time anyone performs this song, Dolly's cash register rings!

Ola! Dolly wrote this song for her first manager Porter Wagner. Dolly fulfilled her contract for 5 years then she went on her own! Porter was in love with Dolly and she loved him also, but only as a friend. If you know the meaning behind all of Dolly's music. There's always a deeper meaning than so many people realize! Just wanted to drop the bit of information on my Girl Mrs. DOLLY Parton! Put some respect on that name, after all Dolly is the Queen of Country! Just saying, I'm also a huge fan of all of Ms. Whitney Houston's music also! Adios Amigo! Much love and success to you!

I think Porter was in love with the money she brought him because his stuff wasn't selling anymore but people tuned in to see Dolly on his show & their recorded duets always sold. After she left he sued her because he was losing money.

Agreed. Whitney and Dolly have different deliveries. Whitney is more soulful, but Dolly is more genuine. It's a melancholy delivery about her reluctant departure of her relationship in the selfless pursuit of bettering the life of her partner. Whitney and Dolly both have amazing, unmatched vocal capability. But as an accomplished songwriter, Dolly made bank from Whitney's cover for sure. :)

Dolly wrote this song, she wrote this when she left Porter Wagoners show. She thinks Whitney did an amazing job with this song and even said better. Whitney had a power house voice, Dolly’s softer.

That man joining Dolly was Porter Wagoner, gave Dolly her first big job. When she was going solo; he was really unhappy. They fought & had an ugly law suit (settled out of court). She wrote this song for him to explain why she had to move on. This clip you played was Dolly returning as a guest on his show. that's the joke when he said "sorta sounds like you mean it." Dolly says "I sorta did meant it." Years later, Wagoner had to sell his music catalogue. Dolly bought it & gifted it back to him. I guess she did mean it. Thx

Let's get it right! MORE "BLACK" people think it's Whitney's song! I,BLACK, KNOW that DOLLY HAD HER SONG GO TO #1 ON THE CHARTS 2 SEPARATE TIMES (YEARS APART), LONG BEFORE WHITNEY EVEN THOUGHT OF recording it! I say "black" people simply because MOST blacks don't listen to "country music", but I was RAISED on it, so I KNOW!

Dolly Parton wrote and sang "I will always Love You" and also "Jolene" back in 1974. Dolly was doing a TV show with a guy Porter Wagoner. Dolly had told him that she would hang around and then she was going to go out on her own. She sang it on the TV show and then she left. At the time she was about about 27 years old. Well anyway November 25, 1992 they made a moved called "The Bodyguard '. In the "Bodyguard " a very pretty girl had to start on the movie and Whitney Houston was her name. They wanted her to do h a couple.of songs and one of them was,,"I will always love you" Whitney said that even though the song was beautiful it was country and she didn't sing country. Well then they said that she could even change some of the lyrics and now in the beginning of the song, she did. Well not only the show was a success so was the song. Then of course Whitney had to keep pay Dolly and then Whitney started calling her song. And when that got around, Dolly said she can call it her song she did card as long as the checks would still be coming in and then. Dolly laughed about the whole thing. You got to remember that Whitney Houston was born August 9, 1963.. Dolly Parton has written over 3,000 songs has a whole bunch of Academy Awards, Oscars and even Life Achievement is a Hall of Famer and is known as "The Queen of Country Music" And not only writing music and singing music but Dolly can also plH five or di. musical instruments very well but Dolly has a net worth of s little over 650 million dollars. But anyway according to Rolling Stone Magazine zFolly had only received about seven thousand dollars from Whitney Houston. But anyway young man, I was wondering if you could please play another one of Dolly Parton's songs that I heard a whole back called ' Me and Little Andy" for me? And please tell me what you think of this song because your opinion means so .j b to me Thank you Amigo. Have a Blessed Day. Goodbye. Adios.

Dolly was saying goodby to a real person.. written and sung from the heart. Voice of an angel. Houston's version was meant to be a blockbuster theme of movie and she sang with lots of power.. but the emotions were about a character in a movie..

Dolly doesn't feel a need to impress us. Just sings from the heart a song that she wrote. She knew that you don't have to holler out when you tell someone you'll always love them. Dolly is real. She's "on point" the entire song.

I personally find Dolly’s has more soul in her version. It’s all emotion and tenderness. Whitney’s is big, vocal gymnastics. Technically amazing, but I think people today think that is emotion. It’s not. It’s technical.

Some people confuse soul, with power in their voice. Music from the soul, is what you just listened to. I admit I haven't read through all of your comments, but I hope you have done your research on this song....and Dolly Parton. At the age of 75.....she is still relevant!!!! She has now written, sung or produced approximately 5000 songs. 10 time Grammy winner.....and just this month recorded 3 WORLD RECORDS!!! There is nobody else doing that. She has also donated Millions of books to children. And $1 million of her own money which helped produce the covid vaccines. #LivingLegend

I love Whitney's rendition of this song as well!, I get different emotions from them though! With Whitney I feel more of the pure power of her voice more than the actual lyrics of the song! With Dolly it's as if she's literally reading a love letter to a melody!
I get people that love Whitney's rendition more because it's the one that they grew up listening to, but what I don't get is the utter disrespect from some people!!! I've seen a reaction where the person started laughing then had the audacity to say that Dolly should stick to writing! WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I enjoyed your reaction and everyone's comments. I am a fan of both Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston. I think comparing the two versions is like apples and oranges. As I understand it, Dolly said Porter was not hearing that she was telling him she was leaving. In a couple of interviews, she says that she went home one night and decided to write him a song so he would understand it. She sang it to him the next day.
I guess what amazes me is that she sang it live, with minimal backup up on his show not long after she wrote it. In a few places it sounded like she was still figuring out which syllables went to each note of the melody. He seemed effortless but she had obviously put enormous though into it. Also, remember that this was the 70's. If she had gone on there and sung it to her boss as a power ballad, she would have looked like the ungrateful understudy trying to debase what Porter had done for her success. Had she come across anything other than humble and appreciative, she could have ended her career before it started. Dolly knew this better than anyone because she is evidently a genius in business and marketing. So, it as sweet, within the tradition of the paternalistic genre of country music and it had the right impact to get to leave.
Whitney was the ultimate power ballad singer. Her delivery was what one souls expect from the movie because she was the boss in the movie being the popular artist. The version she ended up delivering had every advantage of super producer/arranger David Foster through his arrangement and guidance. It was fully produced, marketed, came with a movie and sung by the power ballad super star of her time.
So, to me, they are both brilliant representations of what the best of music can provide and such diverse output. Dolly's poetry delivered in an almost bluegrass innocence blossomed into a World Wide Legendary Smash hit produced with the finest minds, voices and technology offer. Only in America! Thank you for featuring this.

Backsory: Porter Wagoner was a country singer whose career was waining but still had a TV show. He hired Dolly to be "The girl singer" on the show & the audience loved her immediately & ratings grew. His solo recordings no longer sold at all but duets with Dolly sold well. She had told him she'd stay 5 yrs. She stayed 7. His reaction to her wanting to move on was terrible. She wrote this to convince him to let her go in peace. He finally agreed but then sued her because his fortunes went downhill. Still, Dolly always said she loved & was grateful to him. Years later, when his finances were so bad that he put his music catalog up for sale, Dolly heard about it, bought it & gifted it back to him.

From ET: The track became a massive hit and, according to Forbes, earned Parton a minimum of $10 million in royalties. On WWHL, Parton revealed that she decided to invest that money in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Nashville called Sevier Park because it felt like "the perfect place for her to be." W. Huston sang this with power and it is beautiful, Dolly sang it from the heart for the purpose she wrote it for, and it is beautiful. God bless Whitney and I miss her singing now she sing for the angels. But since Dolly heard Whitney sing it she says it is Whitney’s song now. Did you know she turned Elvis down because he wanted to buy this song and all the rights and she said no because it is her song and she wrote it. So Elvis never sang it.

Dolly wrote & performed this song from the heart. Just for Porter Wagner, when she left his show to break out as a solo artist.
Whitney Houston was her second choice for the remake from another artist. I believe it was Patty Labell who regretted not taking it on.
Both Whitney & Dolly are both phenomenal & gifted singers, I enjoy them both. No reason to compare two talents. Just enjoy each one for the beauty they are so gifted to share and honored they share their talent.
Whitney is definitely a stronger, powerful & more aggressive singer… soulful.
Dolly is a soft, sweet, country story-telling heart-felt singer.
So glad you enjoyed both of these talented ladies.

Like apples and oranges, even though it's essentially the same song. Dolly's got a lighter soprano, makes it sound almost delicate. Whitney's voice trended more toward alto (her range notwithstanding) and her voice is much more robust sounding. Not to mention the difference in composition, the smooth, steady, lullaby-like country vs the more dynamic and changeable R&B/Pop that Whitney produced. :)

I agree, it's nice when someone recording a cover makes sure people know the history of a song. That being said, that wasn't really necessary with this song. At the time, most everyone knew this was a Dolly song. Dolly took this song to #1 in both the 70s and again in the 80s when she re-recorded it for the soundtrack of the movie The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress). It hit #1 a third time with Whitney's rendition. Even Elvis wanted to make a cover of this song if that gives you an idea of how big a hit this was long before Whitney ever recorded her beautiful rendition.

Whitney's version is much more powerful. Both are beautiful & very different & almost like different songs. Dolly was on this TV show for 5 years 'The Porter Wagner show' & her contract was up & the guy in this video was her boss Porter Wagner. He wanted her to sign another contract & she wanted to go solo. He wouldn't listen to her, so she went home & wrote this song for him to explain her feelings. I enjoy how Dolly performs this now, after polishing it up. This was literally her first performance of the song. She also sang it in a very fun comedy western movie, starring Burt Reynolds, called 'The best little whorehouse in Texas'. She was the madam of course & sang it to the sheriff she was in love with. Fun movie. Check out Dolly's song 'Jolene' to see her sassy side. She has an awesome sense of humor & loves to brag about Whitney making her rich.

The great thing about this song is that Dolly and Whitney made it their own. Dolly wrote it and put her unique voice to it and Whitney honored the song by putting her own emotions and incredible voice to it. You just can not compare the two.

Whitney's version was created for the movie.

I think Whitney sings it with more power and desperation to hold on to love. Dolly sings it softly. And like she's content with moving on. In this song people fail to realize. The man is left crying. That being said you dont get that point with Whitney's version. Dolly's version you get shes saying goodbye.

Dolly has the rights to this song so she gets royalties every time Whitney’s version is played. You have to know the story behind the song. It makes a big difference.

Whitney sings this song in a way that showcases her magnificent voice. Dolly sings it in a way that conveys the meaning of the lyrics. And why not? Dolly wrote the song, and she knows what each word means so obviously she puts more meaning into the song. No one would dispute that Whitney has a great voice but I much prefer Dolly's version.

Dolly wrote this song to explain to her manager/agent that it was time for her to move on in her career. She wasn’t going to renew their contract. Yet, she would remember all he did to get her career started. She’s happy to move on but still sad that their relationship would be changed. She just wanted him to understand. Hence, the softer version.

Whitney made her own. Dolly I think is the mellow and a story teller. Both are amazing

Both of these women can sing, and when they sang this song if was with a different purpose for each of the. I love both version’s. I believe they mode their point when they sang. I don’t see either one being better then the other. And because they are just different enough I can have both in my list and I joy both versions.

Dolly has told the story that Elvis wanted this song but they also wanted the rights to it and the thing that has made Dolly the bazillionair that she is is that she doesn’t give up the rights to her music and she said no. She also used money which she got a lot of from Whitney’s version and put it back into black neighborhoods in Tennessee because she is a national treasure. She also said she had to pull over her car the first time she heard Whitney singing it it was so beautiful

I definitely appreciate your appreciation and you explained the differences very well and you're right it's just differences but I feel that she is speaking it more because this song is to somebody actually she's singing it to that man right in the show that she's singing on he walks on to the shot at the end I don't know if you're gonna have it but if you do it's cole Porter cause he she was leaving him his show and because she left his show failed

Omg stop him, Dolly doesn’t need your approval of HER song and what she felt when truly feeling it! You have an 4 from me. I love Whitney but the credit goes to Dolly!

Dolly is singing to a person in the same room.
Whitney is singing to a person in the last row of an auditorium.

Dolly Parton wrote that song she also said she didn't care if Whitney Houston covered the song as long as her cash register with ching ching she is quoted as saying she made a lot of money off of that song about three different times there were three different people who did the song including the songwriter Dolly Parton

The great thing is we DO NOT have to choose between the two versions. Dolly's version shows a fragility and vulnerability. Whitney's was more soulful and (obviously) much more powerful. They are both excellent and we are able to enjoy both.

Like Dolly Parson's version, softer, but gets stronger. More sincere. Her lyrics, her song.

It is Dolly's song first and foremost. She wrote it and sang it first.
