I can relate so much as a hispanic woman. When I rededicated my life to the Lord, some of my family surrounding me made me feel like I was walking away from my ethnicity. They could not and still don’t understand why I do not participate in Day of the Dead, or how can I not be a Catholic, if Mexican is basically the same as being Catholic. I had alot of searching the scripture to do because I thought I was in the wrong, I was beginning to believe that I had to participate in Day Of the Dead if I was Mexican, that I had to be Catholic and pray to Mary. Thank the Lord for His word, for giving me His Holy Spirit and wisdom to understand scripture. I cannot wait to read the book!
I can definitely relate to this as well, as an indigenous chamoru woman from Guam. 🇬🇺 Catholisism goes hand-in-hand with our cultural identity. This episode was comforting to know that I don’t have to give up my roots, in order to stay rooted in Jesus Christ our Lord! 🙌🏽

For me as a black woman, a few of my closest friends + family are really questioning (in different ways) why I believe in Jesus Christ rather than some self-serving, ancestry-praising, Egyptian gods/goddesses-idolizing entities!🙄 It’s either that, or Islam- yet, following Christ is the one thing they side-eye. 🤦🏽♀️ To me, that just confirms everything I’m learning about just who Christ is! Almost all cultures find different ways/reasons to dismiss belief in Christ. Those of us who want to be (& those who are successfully being) part of the remnant of God must be doing SOMETHING right! 🙏🏽👏🏽❤️

Yes- the Perry’s have been great examples (at least publicly) of following Christ & walking the walk! 🎉 Lacrae is still working on his luke-warmness it seems (like many of us), but I like that at least he is aware of these shortcomings in his own walk & faith. I feel if he continues to surround himself by people like Jackie & Preston, Meagan Ashley, and many others (especially the real God-worshipping black male pastors), he’ll be good soon. I like hearing things from his viewpoint; but one must be wise enough when listening to him that they recognize his worldly struggles from biblical truth & don’t make the mistake of thinking some of his ways are acceptable in the eyes of Christ. But it’s important for people to see themselves & their struggles in other believers of Christ too. 🙏🏽❤

I'm born and raised in South Africa but still resonate with all this 100%. Also found myself in the thick of "African Spirituality" (even though I was raised Christian) all from the pursuit of trying to "find myself". But by the Grace of God He saved me and opened my eyes. It's still the same view here in SA that Christianity is the "colonisers religion" and we are apparently still oppressed because we are Christian. I'm here to say, you can still be African, you can still be Xhosa and a servant/follower of Jesus Christ my Lord.
You're absolutely right. However, that narrative of Christianity as a colonial religion isn't unfounded. Many missionaries pursued self-interest over the gospel when they got to Africa. The results were often disastrous for locals. It wasn't an expected discovery for me to find out about the Dutch Reform Church's role in developing the the apartheid policy. The best thing about getting saved is learning the truth of the gospel and by our actions, correcting those mistakes from the past.

Yes, the faith was already in Africa but not widespread enough to trump this colonial narrative, which persists because people still feel the effects of that abuse. African-Americans are doing a great job of unpacking that for their context. That's still to happen on a significant scale in Africa.

Yup! Definitely my story! I saw a documentary that made me rethink my faith. I ended up feeling like I was lied to so I ended up denying Christ because I wasn’t sure if He was real. I wouldn’t even speak His name -for two years!!!! I’d pray and say God but would never say Jesus. Got into tarot, and crystals- all the things. I was GONE chile! I came home in 2020 after asking God to take control of my life. That was May 2020 and by August 2020 I was saved! I’m sooooo happy He welcomed me back.

I love this interview. I went to college thinking everyone knew and loved Jesus because I grew up Christian as I was born into a family that professed to be Christian. I thought as long as was a good person, sing a couple gospel songs and go to church from time to time, I was going to heaven. I had no idea what salvation was and what studying the entire Bible for yourself and cultivating a relationship with Christ looked like. I am grateful that I gave my life to Christ sophomore year. I’m definitely looking forward to this book!
I love the references to Daniel. I was just reading it this morning. I said to my husband Daniel is a blueprint of how to live in Babylon and still be faithful to God. I loved this show.
Needed this! Grew up in a church culture and household that taught young girls the most important thing to do was keep our legs closed. They didn’t prepare us for what the world would do or the other temptations we would face and how to not stray away from God. We were put out into the world with our purity rings and internalized shame but no clue how the world and the enemy would twist our faith because the foundation it was built on was shaky and man made. They did not prepare us to meet unbelievers who knew more about scripture and had similar church hurt/testimonies of abuse. It’s hard not to fall into the world when they have the same scars. So glad God took a hold of me and helped me strip away what was his word versus what pleased the church. AMAZING WORD!!
As a bi-racial black women raised by a black mom, aunties and grandma this is for me, I see myself as a black women. I’m looked at and not seen for who I am, I have to always defend who I am because my skin color doesn’t announce me. I will be reading this book… excited about it…

Hey y’all, Texas white woman here… Dr. Lyons, I promise we’re not all “Karens”, lol. I’m thankful that you chose to be obedient to the Lord and write to the black ladies specifically of our Christian faith. My black girl friends, Christian or not, that were born in the US or in an African country have deep thoughts on their ancestors’ spiritual beliefs and how they differ with their own Christian beliefs. They have talked to me about the shame they receive for practicing Christianity from their family and friends since it is not that of their ancestors. The weight of the shame is even heavier when it comes from their living elders. So, with that said, this white chic over here does not have the same issues as her black girl friends. I have no idea if your book speaks to the above mentioned issue, but my point is, if the Lord gave you an assignment, I’m thankful you chose to be obedient to Him. Papa knows the hearts out there and what is needed. Just don’t let the stupidity of some (white folks) cloud your heart to think we’re all like that. Keep up the great work. ❤

My God! I identify so much with your story. In college I was told I was judgemental for being Christian then I started dating non Christian men to prove I wasnt judging non believers. So I dated a 5 percenter and started diving into “African spirituality” and trying to find identity as a black woman and love and not even realizing how I was being led astray from truth. It’s like I’m hearing my story outside of myself for the first time.
Dr. Lyons is Christian Fiyahhhh. I am really grateful for the dedication to Christ and diversity in Women as disciples! On April 14, 2024 The Lord called me from living a lesbian lifestyle for more than 32 consecutive years...3.2 decades, and The Lord called me out of it in less than 30 minutes 🙌🏿. The Lord called me, counseled me, guided me, instructed me, affirmed me, and esteemed me. He called me to live Holy unto Him, and I surrendered completely shouting YES LORD! I'm Blessed to have been born into a family of Grass-roots Christian Men & Women of color, yet I'm fully able to appreciate the "Great Altar Call" The Lord told me He's doing. Thank you all for living out Romans 8:28 and I'm completely on hallelujah cloud 9 and pleasantly overwhelmed by GOD'S GOODNESS! I'm headed towards discipleship training in my local church and wherever The Lord tells me to go! You all are encouraging and winning so many souls for Christ! ❤

this is the conversation that needs to be had at the loudest decibel available! I'm from the Caribbean and the majority of my people have strayed away from Christianity due to the rise in the "Jesus is the white man's God" teaching. The rise in ancestor worship and the embracement of spirits in my region of the world is so concerning.
This was such a a beautiful interview. There are so many things Dr. Serita said that apply to African American/Black women. God allowed a voice to be given to a part of the body that needed a voice.

Also, I don’t see this as a divisive at all, this is speaking to a particular need within a culture. Things I have no clue about, just as I have no clue about drug addiction, but books are written all the time to a target audience. But I can learn and pray for those that life experiences are different from mine, there struggles are different, but different is not division. Difference is a place to sit, learn and grow in God’s beautiful vision for His creations. Just because I struggle with sitting well, doesn’t mean I do not need to receive the message and grow in Christ. Come sit, learn and struggle to sit well with each other to know Christ who die for all of us.

Handsdown all of my favourite episodes. I didn’t want it to end!!! Dr Sarita dropped so many gems. As a girl living in South Africa, people worshipping their ancestors is very prevalent here. Black people go with the idea that Christianity is the white man’s religion and I didn’t know how to reconcile that its not. Neither have i heard the perspective of someone who ever practiced syncretism. Now i have genuine compassion for them and an idea of how to evangelise to them from Dr Sarita’s testimony. My goodness I just lost it at the part of your dad hollering hallelujah hallelujah, as a mom of 2 adults now I felt that in my soul! I have definitely wore out my knees and face for those 2 over the years.
Whew! Dr. Sarita blew me away yet again. There’s something about how she breaks things down that speaks to my soul. She is direct and a wordsmith, but also compassionate and faithfully true to our God and her mission. Whew!
I relate to Dr Sarita Lyons. I never got into African Spirituality but almost dabbled in the Hebrew Israelite faith when I was younger because of racial trauma. And it was because I was the zealous Christian who never knew these temptations would arise. I had never felt so lost and numb in my life. And that is your spirit bearing witness you are drifting. When I came back to Jesus on my knees, He did open my eyes to many more revelations about the world around me, and who I was, but also letting me know never to forsake the gospel and faith I first heard. And that is why people need to have these conversations with their kids on how to study and show yourself approved and let them know temptation will come and how to stand. I definitely want her book and want to give it to others. This episode was so enlightening and a right on time for me. I needed this reminder when evangelizing.
I am glad she is speaking on this! I did take the time to teach my child because I experience being challenged in college in a different ways . However, Satan does come for them early way before college. God is good and his word does not come back void. I remember being recruited to become a member of another religion we were targeted because we were of African descent and was told I was in the wrong religion and believed in the wrong God! However, I did not walk away from the Jesus.

Also found myself in the thick of "African Spirituality" (even though I was raised Christian) all from the pursuit of trying to "find myself". But by the Grace of God He saved me and opened my eyes. It's still the same view here in SA that Christianity is the "colonisers religion" and we are apparently still oppressed because we are Christian. I'm here to say, you can still be African, you can still be Xhosa and a servant/follower of Jesus Christ my Lord.
You're absolutely right. However, that narrative of Christianity as a colonial religion isn't unfounded. Many missionaries pursued self-interest over the gospel when they got to Africa. The results were often disastrous for locals. It wasn't an expected discovery for me to find out about the Dutch Reform Church's role in developing the the apartheid policy.
The best thing about getting saved is learning the truth of the gospel and by our actions, correcting those mistakes from the past.

@a.dlamini I didn't dispute the truth of Christianity. Yes, the faith was already in Africa but not widespread enough to trump this colonial narrative, which persists because people still feel the effects of that abuse. African-Americans are doing a great job of unpacking that for their context. That's still to happen on a significant scale in Africa.
Same sis that movement exploded here in 2020 and i was caught up in it until late 2022 THANK GOD i found my way back slowly but surely.

Yup! Definitely my story! I saw a documentary that made me rethink my faith. I ended up feeling like I was lied to so I ended up denying Christ because I wasn’t sure if He was real. I wouldn’t even speak His name -for two years!!!! I’d pray and say God but would never say Jesus. Got into tarot, and crystals- all the things. I was GONE chile! I came home in 2020 after asking God to take control of my life. That was May 2020 and by August 2020 I was saved! I’m sooooo happy He welcomed me back.

I love this interview. I went to college thinking everyone knew and loved Jesus because I grew up Christian as I was born into a family that professed to be Christian. I thought as long as was a good person, sing a couple gospel songs and go to church from time to time, I was going to heaven. I had no idea what salvation was and what studying the entire Bible for yourself and cultivating a relationship with Christ looked like. I am grateful that I gave my life to Christ sophomore year.

Needed this! Grew up in a church culture and household that taught young girls the most important thing to do was keep our legs closed. They didn’t prepare us for what the world would do or the other temptations we would face and how to not stray away from God. We were put out into the world with our purity rings and internalized shame but no clue how the world and the enemy would twist our faith because the foundation it was built on was shaky and man made. They did not prepare us to meet unbelievers who knew more about scripture and had similar church hurt/testimonies of abuse. It’s hard not to fall into the world when they have the same scars. So glad God took a hold of me and helped me strip away what was his word versus what pleased the church. AMAZING WORD!!

Hey y’all, Texas white woman here… Dr. Lyons, I promise we’re not all “Karens”, lol. I’m thankful that you chose to be obedient to the Lord and write to the black ladies specifically of our Christian faith. My black girl friends, Christian or not, that were born in the US or in an African country have deep thoughts on their ancestors’ spiritual beliefs and how they differ with their own Christian beliefs. They have talked to me about the shame they receive for practicing Christianity from their family and friends since it is not that of their ancestors. The weight of the shame is even heavier when it comes from their living elders.
So, with that said, this white chic over here does not have the same issues as her black girl friends. I have no idea if your book speaks to the above mentioned issue, but my point is, if the Lord gave you an assignment, I’m thankful you chose to be obedient to Him. Papa knows the hearts out there and what is needed. Just don’t let the stupidity of some (white folks) cloud your heart to think we’re all like that. Keep up the great work. ❤

My God! I identify so much with your story. In college I was told I was judgemental for being Christian then I started dating non Christian men to prove I wasnt judging non believers. So I dated a 5 percenter and started diving into “African spirituality” and trying to find identity as a black woman and love and not even realizing how I was being led astray from truth. It’s like I’m hearing my story outside of myself for the first time.
Dr. Lyons is Christian Fiyahhhh. I am really grateful for the dedication to Christ and diversity in Women as disciples!
On April 14, 2024 The Lord called me from living a lesbian lifestyle for more than 32 consecutive years...3.2 decades, and The Lord called me out of it in less than 30 minutes 🙌🏿. The Lord called me, counseled me, guided me, instructed me, affirmed me, and esteemed me. He called me to live Holy unto Him, and I surrendered completely shouting YES LORD! I'm Blessed to have been born into a family of Grass-roots Christian Men & Women of color, yet I'm fully able to appreciate the "Great Altar Call" The Lord told me He's doing.
Thank you all for living out Romans 8:28 and I'm completely on hallelujah cloud 9 and pleasantly overwhelmed by GOD'S GOODNESS! I'm headed towards discipleship training in my local church and wherever The Lord tells me to go!

this is the conversation that needs to be had at the loudest decibel available! I'm from the Caribbean and the majority of my people have strayed away from Christianity due to the rise in the "Jesus is the white man's God" teaching. The rise in ancestor worship and the embracement of spirits in my region of the world is so concerning.
This was such a a beautiful interview. There are so many things Dr. Serita said that apply to African American/Black women. God allowed a voice to be given to a part of the body that needed a voice.

Things I have no clue about, just as I have no clue about drug addiction, but books are written all the time to a target audience.
But I can learn and pray for those that life experiences are different from mine, there struggles are different, but different is not division.
Difference is a place to sit, learn and grow in God’s beautiful vision for His creations.
Just because I struggle with sitting well, doesn’t mean I do not need to receive the message and grow in Christ.
Come sit, learn and struggle to sit well with each other to know Christ who die for all of us.

Handsdown all of my favourite episodes. I didn’t want it to end!!! Dr Sarita dropped so many gems. As a girl living in South Africa, people worshipping their ancestors is very prevalent here. Black people go with the idea that Christianity is the white man’s religion and I didn’t know how to reconcile that its not. Neither have i heard the perspective of someone who ever practiced syncretism. Now i have genuine compassion for them and an idea of how to evangelise to them from Dr Sarita’s testimony. Whew! Dr. Sarita blew me away yet again. There’s something about how she breaks things down that speaks to my soul. She is direct and a wordsmith, but also compassionate and faithfully true to our God and her mission. Whew!
I relate to Dr Sarita Lyons. I never got into African Spirituality but almost dabbled in the Hebrew Israelite faith when I was younger because of racial trauma. And it was because I was the zealous Christian who never knew these temptations would arise. I had never felt so lost and numb in my life. And that is your spirit bearing witness you are drifting. When I came back to Jesus on my knees, He did open my eyes to many more revelations about the world around me, and who I was, but also letting me know never to forsake the gospel and faith I first heard. And that is why people need to have these conversations with their kids on how to study and show yourself approved and let them know temptation will come and how to stand. I definitely want her book and want to give it to others. This episode was so enlightening and a right on time for me. I needed this reminder when evangelizing.

I am glad she is speaking on this! I did take the time to teach my child because I experience being challenged in college in a different ways . However, Satan does come for them early way before college. God is good and his word does not come back void. I remember being recruited to become a member of another religion we were targeted because we were of African descent and was told I was in the wrong religion and believed in the wrong God! However, I did not walk away from the Jesus.
