Like a lot of American gamers I'm sure, I only know these characters from Tatsunoko vs Capcom. Cool to hear a bit more about them!
I think the "wonderswan is just bad anime licensed game" are from the same crowd that were like "3do has nothing special to offer" and "castlevania64 is the worst castlevania" type of people.
Both notions that have since long been disproven by people who actually went through 3do libraries to find that most of it was hidden gems, and that castlevania64 is fucking awesome if a little flawed.
People who never actually played the things they are roasting, and just parroting the words of their favorite AVGN era game youtubers, who would just buy like a single video game with the intention of going viral by just shitting on it without ever giving it a chance.
"All bad anime games" is obviously reductive, but I think it speaks to the underlying truth that the WonderSwan library can feel awfully sparse. Part of that is how difficult it is to find information on WonderSwan games. This series is the best resource I've found so far, including Japanese sources.
As for WonderSwan "hidden gems", well, these days you can buy Judgement Silversword on Steam. The boom in retro game ports, rereleases, and remakes this past decade means that games are hidden or gems, but rarely both. I think it's a shame SquareEnix left Makai Toushi SaGa (WSC) out of the SaGa trilogy rerelease, but the GB version of SaGa is good enough that I can't be mad about it. Just disappointed.

and so this almost ends my backlog binge! yeah not super familiar with this anime outside of TXC back on wii. though this RPG does sound like a neat concept. really playing out like the anime. neat to see the upgrade tangrams system as well!
