Sequential Circuits Pro One Tutorial

  • Overview and tutorial of the Sequential Circuits Pro One synth. This is a vintage analog monophonic synthesizer from the 80s. I go over each knob and switch and end with a bit of a demo. My keyboard double triggers occasionally and some of the switches are a bit scratchy but it gets better towards the end.

Thanks for watching! Sorry about the keyboard and scratchy knobs, it gets better towards the end. I need to get mine serviced/cleaned probably soon.

I imagine the keyboard is frustrating as a user, but as a listener I dig it. Nice tape dropout feature. ^~^

@@anodyneinstitute Was a common problem on Pro One, they had "J" wire fed contacts on the keyboard, not the best idea lol...de-oxit cleaner will sort your issues.

You beauty! Always great to have someone knowledgeable go over something you own, because it's easy to overlook a function or sound possibility.
Btw - the Techsmechs replacement keyboard pack is definitely worth looking into. Fixes everything that's wrong with the original keyboard design.

I had a Pro-One back in the early 1980's as part of my set-up in the band I played in back then. I loved it to bits. When the band fell apart and I went on to do other things for a decade or so I sold this wonderful machine … I always regretted it. A 'wound' that only healed when I acquired my Moog GM in 2018.

Having grown up with "Upstairs at Erics " on heavy rotation , I recently purchased a vintage pro-one with the non -board mounted power supply and J-wire keyboard. The Behringer version is a great option but I will buy at a later date. The moogs are deep and buttery...arps are thick and fizzy and pro-1's are fast and cutting and a bit more aggressive and meaner all around.

SCi Pro One is great and indeed is the sound of upstairs at Eric’s & to this day is still Vince Clarke’s favourite ever synth..but Vince Clarke era Depeche mode used
a Moog Prodigy for bass (Andy Fletcher) a Yamaha CS-5 ( Martin Gore) and Vince used a Kawai s-100F. Live. For the reel to reel tape backing drum track and percussion Daniel Miller of Mute used an ARP 2600 for that incredible bass drum sound & filter percussion sounds and for the wonderful snare & metallic ringing hi-hats they used a Korg KR-55 drum machine. This is Depeche mode 1980 & 1981. (not on the speak & spell album though, they got in the studio & ruined in. Their live sound then was amazing in the early days) In my opinion the best synth pop ever. To hear the above instrumentation listen to their first single vinyl version Of Dreaming of Me or the some bizzare version of Photographic or Ice Machine. Just Can’t get Enough was the biggest hit with that instrumentation. Vince Clarke & Daniel Miller of Mute were a match made in synth heaven.

They need to do a re-make, like they did with the P5 and P10. The old original pieces don't deserve to sell so high. I'd like to see that market fall flat. Prices on keyboards like the Roland Jupiter-4 are ridiculous. It wasn't even the best machine by those standards back then once the JP8 and OBXa/OB8 came along.
