Glad someone is making videos on this kayak but I dont think people understand the design difference between a stand up kayak (Topwater) and an off shore kayak (Salty). When a swell hits a boat broadside a boat with a round or v hull can stay relatively straight up and down on the side of the wave. You dont feel like the wave is trying to tip you over as much. When a wave hits a flat or tunnel hull the kayak tries to stay flat on the water surface so if its a steep angle the boat is also at a steep angle. While it is great that you can stand in this one its design is to be comfortable in hours of offshore swells.
Exactly! It’s made for it! I think people are just curious to know if the design is also suitable for them to stand when they’re inshore. Having a boat that can do it all is a HUGE upside.
@@CaptChrisCanning Totally agree its just that some people think the reduction in standing stability is a negative when its actually a positive for the purpose of this kayak was designed for. Its supposed to rock more easily.
Chris, thanks for a great review of the Salty PDL. I just purchased 2 of them today for my wife and I. After trying them out in Roosevelt Inlet here in Delaware, I definitely agree with your comments as to the speed, agility and fun.
Thanks Chris for the honest review. Just ordered one and can’t wait to get it on the water. Coming from a Perception Outlaw 11.5 where paddling was a little tiresome, the pedal drive will be a welcome change. Keep up the good work.
Dude you had me so worried when you started rocking it. I thought you were going over. Ha ha, the label, it's the "SS Minnow," ha ha...Great job Chris.
I want a speedy kayak that I can take out recreationally… with the option to fish. I don’t live by the ocean but I live very close to the Great Lakes… both Erie and Ontario. This would be perfect and maybe a a small troller like a Bixby or the other one, Torqeedo I think it’s called. This thing would haul with that hull design 💨 💦
Hey Chris, I’m torn between the Salty and the Sportsman 120 PDL. I fish more fresh water than salt, but do fish both. Which do you like better? Thanks, man.
This kayak is actually harder to flip than you think. It just feels like it will, but it will lean to the point that water will start filling in before it flips.
Subd. Keep the content on that badboy coming. Have you thought about how to install a FF? Not too many vids out there on that. Although I did see someone run their wires up and on top of the boat. I think I’d rather add a couple thru hull wiring plugs for the transducer and batt cables to keep it clean and inside the hull. The only thing is having to snake the batt wire from the rear hatch area to the thru hull plug, seeing that’s where the batt will be. Hmm..
Hey Chris , I'm not really into yaks but doesn't any one make a trolling motor that you just clamp on or adapt to kayaks ? I mean even if you don't have auto pilot it would. Be quicker and less tiring , I'd be more of the John boat trolling motor dude, I know it's just easier than hauling the boat but comfort level and easy access to equipment and stuff , plus I like to fly fish so standing on a deck and easier site fishing ! Great video as usual , and tight lines ! 🐟👍🏼
Well, YES I can say that fly fishing in a pedal drive kayak would probably have it's own difficulties, but I will be doing it. Really anyone that seems to add a trolling motor to their kayak ends up not being happy with the design. That is why the AutoPilot is so great. It's seamless
I would love to see you Chris fishing in costal waters or in Tampa Bay. Thanks for your review. I see you having twice the amount of subscribers real soon.
@@CaptChrisCanning Sure do. I was thinking about upgrading to the sportsman autopilot but I can't see myself giving up instant reverse and my deep V to cut through and redirect those waves.
Nice yak 👍🏻do they make plugs for those holes by the pedal drive looks like a good bit of water comes in there ? I still haven’t decided on what to get . I wish they had somewhere near me were you could test them .
oh absolutely AJ, you can get scuppers for all the holes and no water would get in at all. Where do you live? and what kind of kayak are you looking for? Maybe I could help you look in the right direction?!
Chris Canning I’m in Maryland . Not really any close locations that sell any old town stuff that I know of . I will find something but thanks Chris 👊🏻definitely gonna be the pedal or minn Kota powered .
Yeah Chris, I've been considering this one. So far, not a lot of content out there, but now it's starting to break open. Old Town now seems to be sprinkling them out there to TH-camrs, such as yourself, and the salt is starting to flow (I heard that somewhere). But, I just brought home a Topwater 120 PDL today. In the end for me, it came down to the greater stability, and to the large dry storage up front. Fishing isn't the only use for me. I might try some kayak camping, and the Topwater (or Sportsman) seems to have better cargo capability. Would love to see you give kayak camping a try on your channel! Looking forward to more great Salty vids.
Bro if you needed the storage on the inside then the Topwater was the way to go! I promise you will not be disappointed with that boat. I have plenty of hours on the Topwater, both it and the Salty are different boats. That being said Old Town makes such a quality product that either boat will make someones dream kayak a real life thing.
Just preordered my salty on Saturday. Almost got the sportsman 120 but I know this will be better for the big water recreation lakes I fish🤙 thanks chris!
Nice yak Chrissypoo.. Actually keep me of surprised you didn't get the auto pilot.. Still think Josh is going to run away from you..lol. But I can see your going to be catching a lot of fish from it.. Great video , keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.. Always your friend, fan, and subscriber..
RICKKKK Missed your comments brother. Thanks for watching and noooo it wasn't the autopilot, but hopefully i will be getting that one soon. Hope all it well!
Another awesome video on the Salty, thanks! When do you think you're going to get a chance for the flip test? You don't know where the limits are until you've pushed past them, lol. Seriously though, this boat has been on my radar for months. No stock around, but I can get the "regular" Sportsman PDL 120. I'm drawn towards the Salty because I think it will be better for choppy waters and the occasional surf launch, but I really need to know how much stability I'm giving up to get that. I'm hoping the Salty is one of those kayaks with awesome secondary stability, where it only *feels* like you're going to tip, but it's actually a lot harder to flip than you think. Now go test that theory for me!! 😂🤣
I actually did the flip test this past week and the video will be up this week. I am going to be honest, it is not as stable as the 120 PDL (topwater too), but after doing the flip test I have more confidence in the boat. just like you said, it tips A LOT, but it;'s designed like that. the side save you from flipping and you can save yourself pretty easy. Like i couldn't flip it standing on one side of the boat. Stay tuned for the video.
@@CaptChrisCanning That's great news, and I can't wait for the video. In kayak terms, it sounds like the Salty has more secondary stability and the standard Sportsman has more primary stability.
@@CaptChrisCanning so if im just sitting and never intend to stand am I'm I going to feel like I'm going to flip all the time. My last kayak I owned was an Ocean Kayak Drifter and I nevwr felty tipsy in it but that was a design from the late 80's..I'm 5'11 at 220 lbs
*Nice Review Chris... Almost makes me wonder why there aren't some kind of "Optional Factory Outriggers" that could be slapped out from the sides for when you want to stand up to see or fight a fish... and then easily retracted for cursing.. er.. ah... cruising... Be Safe Young'n!* Thanx ..gw

How does this compare to the similar priced Hobie compass for inshore/offshore?
I have never personally used the Hobie compass, but I have been very impressed with my kayak so far! Been about a year now too
