It's rare to see someone react to Ministry songs at all, but here you did a whole album AND enjoyed it. You're truly a gem Molly! This is in my favorite trilogy of Ministry albums: Land of Rape and Honey, The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, and Psalm 69. I recommend them all. Also, Skinny Puppy are the kings of industrial to me, but they sure took a while for me to get used to. Like other said, Rabies is a good start, but my favorite is Too Dark Park.

Fun fact: the guy doing vocals on Jesus Built My Hotrod is Gibby Haynes from The Butthole Surfers. Al Jorgensen brought him in to record vocals, and when Gibby got there, he was so drunk he couldn’t stand up. So, he just slumped onto a stool and recorded gibberish into a microphone for like 4 hours. Then Al spent like 2 week’s editing it.

I love this era of Ministry. The Land of Rape and Honey is my favorite album of theirs. Psalm 69 and The Mind Is a Terrible Thing To Taste are awesome as well. that run of 3 records from 1988-1992 is their best work, everything outside of that period is just ok in my opinion

This is an absolutely essential album if you're into industrial. However, this is not my favorite Ministry album. I cannot get enough of their album Filth Pig. Most of the songs are slower, but the quality of the songs are much better IMHO. The title track Filth Pig, Welcome To The Fall, and the cover of Bob Dylan's Lay Lady Lay are absolutely fantastic.

you're just wrong on everything here dude. land of rape and honey and mind is a terrible thing are the only good ministry albulm worth picking up, after that you need to grab revolting cocks, 1000 homo dj's, pale head... basically all the wax trax shit. When jourgensen actually got a pay check he just uppped his drug dosage and well if you hadn't heard anything before you were likely tickled with the bullshit he pushed out forever after and never recognized the shit that inspired NIN or marilyn manson.
It's fucking sad but this alubulm should have been a launching point but instead it was the line where al just got really fucking rich and high. Just look at all his collaborations afterwards with his old buddies.... oh wait he didn't do those anymore, instead he made a couple shit albulms while trent reznor and marilyn manson took over the industrial scene and inspired literally no one else? I mean how to destroy angels maybe but that was just trent making an album for his girfrliend.

Skinny Puppy - Last Rights, try that one if you can. There's also an album Skinny Puppy did with Al Jourgenson (singer of Ministry) called Rabies which could be a good segue into their work. For other great Ministry albums, I actually like The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste slightly more than Psalm 69 but P69 does have some bangers on it.

I saw Ministry live in SF in 2015 for what was supposed to be their farewell tour. (Al has died four times so far and always come back but one of these days it might actually “take.” The joke is that Heaven doesn’t want him and the Devil doesn’t want the competition.) It was literally, without exaggeration, the single *loudest* thing I have ever experienced-and I’ve stood in an underground concrete train yard between two running diesel locomotives. (Northwest Station in Chicago.) The first song literally shook the carbonation out of my wife’s beer, it started fizzy and went flat in three minutes *just from the sound*.
Any time they tour, I go. The 2017 show wasn’t *quite* as loud, but as a 30th Anniversary show for “The Land of Rape and Honey” with a live performance of the entire album plus a lot of current songs it was just incredible.
If you haven’t listened to it, I strongly suggest that album for a reaction as well. A friend of mine said, the track “Stigmata,” “I can feel my hearing impairing!”

Yes, indeed, most industrial metal bands have a common thing about their sound, they are very danceable and often keep the same rhythm throughout the song, but at the same time, I would not say that they sound monotonous (at least not in a bad sense of the word). It is a very catchy music genre. And yes, this genre does use a lot of samples. It's funny that you noticed about the militaristic sound - there is even a separate subgenre, martial industrial, where the whole sound is built around militaristic marches and aesthetics.
If you are interested in listening to something similar, I strongly advise you to listen to Front Line Assembly (especially their albums from the 90s), KMFDM (also something from the 90s or early 2000s), and I also HIGHLY recommend the album "Concentration" by Machines of Loving Grace. This is a very cool industrial-rock album, maybe not as heavy as Ministry, but very catchy and enjoyable, somewhat similar to Nine Inch Nails - definitely a must-listen. Also, you can try something heavier, for example, Godflesh or Fear Factory.

    • @ladaddy19
      @ladaddy19 ปีที่แล้ว

@@hermunkulus it was 1992 in the Bible belt. The guy that was over the station (not sure if it was a professor or not) was scared of the FCC and the last line of the song "filled you up with the devil's cock and he'll come in the name of the lord" is both "vulgar" and frowned upon. To be honest it was probably just the loop of 69 over and over again.

Hi Molly! I love how enthusiastic you are about getting into different music. I’d bet it was your My Bloody Valentine video that got me watching your channel as I’m a huge fan. Ministry is great yes, and just the tip of the iceberg as you probably are aware. I would definitely recommend working backwards through their discography from here, and as you’ve read, their first album is quite different. Here’s my hot take on the matter: Ministry started as a synth pop band in Chicago if I’m correct. I believe it was Al listening to another Chicago band called Big Black that convinced him to make the switch to a heavier industrial rock act. I’m sure there were plenty of other influences as well, but the influence of Big Black is undeniable. What’s strange is that they’re not all that well known by fans of that genre. They were an early project of Steve Albini who is better known for recording and engineering a lot of I guess what would be considered indie rock. Anyway keep up the great react videos and enjoy your journey into the various musical rabbit holes! P.s. Kill Em All is my favorite Metallica album but I can’t wait for you to hear Master of Puppets.

I was an exchange student in New Zealand back in 94 and saw Ministry at a big outdoor music festival. They came on after dark (of course) and when they played Scarecrow it was up there with one of my favorite live concert experiences ever. The hypnotic drone of the song paired with strobe lights created a sort of time lapse slide show of the thousands of people around me dancing/headbanging, most of them shirtless and with long hair. Images that will be burned into my mind forever, such a mood. It was almost like I was witnessing a zombie apocalypse, lol. As others have said if you like that song you would probably enjoy most of Filth Pig.

After that show, the venue had to change so many things. During Ministry the crowd tore down the wood fencing and set at least 3 huge bonfires that people were dancing around, and then right before RHCP people started tearing up the sod on the lawn and having a giant sod fight.
The next show I went to there, they had concrete walls and a dirt hill with no sod.

The mind is a terrible thing to taste is another great album, Dark side of the spoon, Houses of the molé is a decent release, animosity before that is good. Just one fix IS the definitive INDUSTRIAL ANTHEM. you liked TV II , you'll enjoy WTV from Houses of the molé, it's pretty much the sequel/sibling track. Jesus built my hotrod, wasn't initially liked by the studio, but became a HIT, and the guest singer Gabby (from Butthole surfers) was beyond drunk, and sings mostly in Scat, Gibberish. they use a Slide guitar in this song

I'm wondering if what Ministry managed to do was to take the Avant-Garde elements out of Industrial and replace them with Metal, allowing it to become more popular. As Industrial has been going as a genre since the mid 1970s (Throbbing Gristle, Clock DVA, Cabaret Voltaire etc) where a lot of the grime/sludge/sampling/transgressive subject matter came from.
Some of my favourite industrial records are the early Coil ones (released between 1984 and 1987), and while they did quite a few videos/remixes for Nine Inch Nails, they followed a more eclectic path.

  • @StuntrockConfusion

that was fun, I still love scarecrow, but just a little point : this is not industrial music, but industrial rock. Not saying one is better than the other, but if you want to get into industrial music, you'll have to go to Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, SPK, Monte Cazzaza, Zoviet France, Nurse With Wound, Coil, Muslimgauze, HNAS, NON, etc, even if most of those, who created the genre, are most often dismissive of it. If you like NIN, you should deffinitly check Coil, probably Trent Reznor's biggest inspiration, as he financed an album of theirs, they did remixes for him, videos, collaborated on the Lost Highway OST, and his side project is named after one of their songs.
