- Inspired by a Wax Modelling book I'd received, here I have a go at carving a high doom ring out of carving wax. I think take Sterling Silver and applying the Lost Wax technique, convert it to a heavy, solid silver ring.

It's a classic. Simple and elegant : )
Check with an industrial supplier when things settle down and see if they carry Jewler's Rouge. You can get it in either block form or as powder. I perfer the block because it's easer to carry and makes less mess. Combined with 3 in 1 oil it makes an excellent finish polish. I use it for cleaning contacts but a couple of guys I work with use it to clean there jewelry.

I like the fact you showed improvised tools, too many channels will reach for some expensive tool of some kind. The sandpaper on a stick was a great example of a way forward on a project, if the tools needed are not at hand.

What do you use for the mold? Is it just plaster of Paris one can find at a hardware store? Or is it something special?

Geoff, I know you can buy wax ring blanks, but do you know if you can melt/cast that hard wax in silicone molds? I would think that would make things go much faster if you are making similar rings (or anything else for that matter) - make your own custom "95% there" hard wax blanks.
Hi John, yes you can. I've recycled the carving wax you saw in this video on previous occasions, usually into a silicone muffin mould. It's not very good as an injection wax, but it's happy to be melted and poured : )

Hey vog quick question! I noticed after you casted the ring that you have another block right under the ring that you attached to the sprue. Is this for drawing the heat into that block rather then the ring? For porosity problems?
Question. I had a ring casted around the same size but my castor guy said it was too thick and there was a huge amount of porosity all over the ring. But yours looks beautiful. Was it just a skill issue on his end? Why does my ring look bad?

I tried that, but I got banned from all the local lingerie stores ; )
I used to rub the waxes on a wool scarf to buff them. Sometimes I use a the heat of a torch to gently soften/ smooth the wax.

so Vog, how do you like this setup now than your previous outdoor big pours, this looks great for jewelry , thinking now Im invest in all of this stuff and use the gas furnace for big pours .
It's all about what you want to cast Zach. I started big and outside, but then realised I enjoyed small and detailed much more 😊
VOG well my electric foundry just was delivered about 10 mins ago, still haven’t bought the wax injector or the investment vacuum machine I found some that look like the one you reviewed but a knock off brand on eBay for around $650 I think I’m about to buy it the more I watch your videos and a few other guys the more excited I get!

Many jewellery designers don't have any casting equipment. Many CAD or wax design and send their items off to casting professionals. You can generally Google these services 😁
Can you please tell me the advantage of using plaster with a vacuum as opposed to the sand approach. Thank you!
Theoretically, wax in plaster achieves the best possible finish as the plaster forms a perfect negative copy of the wax. Once the wax has been melted away, molten metal is poured in and vacuum sucks THROUGH the porous plaster, pulling the metal into every part of the pattern. Sand can get trapped in tiny details, spoiling the finish, so you can see how plaster has its benefits. But, of course, when you want something big cast, you almost always return to good old sand 😊

What an interesting video - it´s nice to see an online production promoting a real, paper book, too.
Though I would of course expect nothing less from you, I did think it was very chivalrous of you to refrain from mentioning in this video how you did get hold of the stockings. I´m sure that Ms. Jolie is grateful to you for your gentlemanly tact in this regard.
Lastly, I was a little puzzled when you mentioned that the book directed you to reduce weight by hollowing out the ring - does this refer to the band, the bulgy bit, or both?

As for your last comment, it involves the previously demonstrated stick and is best avoided.
One question, do you melt the wax after the concrete is dry?
Great video Geoff. Very nice result in the end as well. Some would say perfect even ; While 3D printing is great, I like the 'hands on' feeling of using wax. Plus, if you stuff up, you can remelt the wax and start again. Well, I can... 'cause I use beeswax. :)

You should use your Dremel to finish the wax ring as well as hollow the knuckleduster bit out before investing. much less metal and a lighter ring. Maybe get Dremel to send you a set of products to review on some more of the rings from the books?
In honesty Louw, it was deliberate. The book demonstrates the hollowing process, but I fancied a big 'knuckleduster' type ring. It felt great : )

There's good content in these books and the steps are simple, but I've never read any other books on the subject to compare. Given what you've said, I think you'll enjoy the content and quickly adapt the techniques for yourself, which is what it's really all about : )

Not suited for wax, no. Coarse files are ideal and those I don't have. If I need to coarsely file metal, I tend to use an angle grinder : )
