I was in Rundu in 1987 on a recovery project, was stationed at 101 workshops in Grootfontein as a Tiffie. The best memories of my life. Respect to every one who served in the SADF!
i was there from 5 Feb 77 until about 25 june 77, was in Pantzer Korps, Staff sergeant Nel Baker he had such a comical moustache, short guy, was such a nice man, but never took nonsense from the other staff, slept in tents close to the airfield, went any times to Bagani on patrol.that part i enjoyed because he never allowed us to do any guard duties as he used the excuse that we can be called out anytime to go on patrol, but rest of army days was not good,
It took us in the Alos about 6 hours to get to Rooikop that day. On the way down there we refuelled at Grootfontein, Otjiwarongo and Omaruru. Great fun!
From about 1975 to 1989 many thoudands of South African troopies passed through Rundu, some never to return to the "States". It was a passage for those generations from being school boys to manhood. In retrospect, this was the end of a remarkable era is the history of SA.
Was my first stop on the way home...Buffalo...Rundu....Grootfontein....Then Waterkloof...then hitch to Durban...Took about 2-3 days to get home for a 1 week break. Freaky....
I was at Rundu 1975 but it never looked like that then i remember sand bag revetments and heavy duty rain in January first 3 month camp i ever did good old days
Been there over Christmas of `72...served in 4 Light Aircraft Esq. I remember buying a battery operated record player and a LP of Donovan at the BBK in Rundu town...guys would come to my tent in the evenings and offer me rations and cuca beer, just to play the old LP...damn, they were fine soldiers! Ek mis julle skurwe klomp bliksems!!!
Was in Rundu vir 13 maande in 1986. Uitgeklaar op Ou Kersdag 24 Desember 1986 nadat ons die heeldag op daardie lughawe gewag het vir die C130. uit Waterkloof.
in Feb 77 we still rode train from Zeerust to Joburg station, then caught a train to Potchefstroom then to De Aar and then to Grootfontein, was 5 full day on train, was hell train ride, , the food was bad, when we arrived at Grootfontein the Friday morning one of the carriages was completely broken down,, one could look right through the carriage from one side to other side as the 3 month campers who went with us did it,, when we got to Rundu we got them at Bagani , thy had to do a extra 3 months without pay to pay back the damage ,lol luckily we could fly back to Zeerust on a C160 ,
i lived in Rundu 80/87..i remeber before the "flosie" c130 arive these aloutte take off, fly over Rundu to give them protection...they use to shoot the 20mm cannon inside them.
I went to Rundu,of all places, on awol with the FlySpy from Windhoek in 88.Certainly beat the shit out of Ondangwa and Oshakati where I spent about 9 months in 87.
If you refer to the S A Air Force being really quiet during the Rhodesian crisis, you are so very very wrong....make sure of your facts before you start talking crap again
@@heuwel I'm aware that they "loaned" a few aircraft and flew occasional reconnaissance and transport flights. I was just more or less shocked that considering how close the threat was to home they didn't hit them as hard as the Rhodesians were. In my opinion I just think that a little more anti-communist collaboration between the two would have helped with their major rebel problem because it was obvious that China was going to keep supplying them with red books and RPGs...

Because it was an Afrikaans speaking person who made the recording.
