- Hudson River Walking Beam live steam model "Thomas Powell".
Part eleven
The Maiden Voyage!
Going back in time, gauge one!...
...and the journey was a long one!...One that took over 5 years and over five thousand hours of work to complete!
"Thomas Powell" is clearly the most challenging scratch built steamboat model I've made up to now, and the one I spent the most time working on, but I think it was well worth it!
Watching this model gently, steadily "walking along" is quite a sight!
Just imagine what it must have been to watch the real paddle steamer majestically passing by from the rivershore, as many locals did back then!
Unfortunately, the only two surviving "walking beam" engine steamboats still in existence today are both static ones! (Eureka, San Francisco and Ticonderoga, Vermont)
The "Walking Beam" name came from Indians living along the rivers; they coined a name for the paddle wheelers which In English meant "mill that walks on the water"!
The Marine Walking Beam engine of the famous 1846 Hudson river side wheeler "Thomas Powell" had a Cylinder diameter of 48 inches, and stroke of 11 feet !
"Tom Powell" or "swan of the Hudson", as she was then called, was believed to be, back in 1846 (!)
the fastest steamboat in the world! She could easily sail up or down the river at 22.5mph! (35.5km/h or 19.5 knots!)
.
Please note : As a "one-off" , parts or plans for this paddle wheeler and it's engine are not for sale!
Thanks for watching!
Peter
Music : Henry Tucker (1826-1882)

Bateau RC à vapeur vive et roues à aubes "Thomas Powell"
Episode 11.
Après de nombreuses heure de recherches, élaboration de plans et de travail (plus de 5000 heures) pour construire ce bateau à roues et sa machine fonctionnelle en vapeur vive, voici enfin son voyage inaugural!
Stunningly beautiful work with an unreal attention to fine detail. Beautifully engineered and built.
Thank you for your kind comment, I'm glad you liked it! 🙏 😀
That is one beautiful and seriously impressive bit of work.
I appreciate your comment, thank you! 👍🙏
As a model railroader I have to admit. This is BY FAR a cooler hobby, gosh darn excellent
Locomotives are cool too! 👍
But I'm glad you appreciated what I think is the best hobby ever ! Thank you! 🙏
This is the best authentic steamship paddle wheeler I've ever see! Beautiful craftsmanship!
I'm glad you liked it! Thank you for your kind comment!
Great to see her maiden voyage steamboats are fascinating to watch large or kit nicely made a great hobby and interesting the craftsmanship and effort you put in very enjoyable 👍
A great hobby with many different things to do!
Thank you for your kind comment, I'm glad you enjoyed it! 👍🙏
As an artist-builder who specialize in steamboats; especially the Hudson River and New England ones, I raise my glass to you on this fine build. Well deserved, sir.
I'm honoured by your comment, Rex, Thank you! 🙏
And I raise my glass to you: the hand-carved paddle steamers you build are awesome!
Very impressive
Thank you, glad you liked it!🙏
This looks so realistic. Great job!
Glad you liked it!
Realism is my biggest concern!
Thank you!
Beautiful job on this boat. I've seen a lot of Steamboats out on Spreckels Lake in San Francisco but nothing that quite measures up to this. If you do another video on it, let's see some more of the mechanics at work. And maybe a description of the engine and a close-up of the mechanism operating the paddles. Great job
Thank you!
I came many years ago (1994) to see Ferry "Eureka"...but not a single model sailing on Spreckels Lake...
Every video I make has a short description.
You can see it's engine here:

Thanks for watching!
I just stumbled on this today. I must say this is a beautiful model you have done here!
I'm glad you appreciated it, Randy
Thanks for the compliment !
Certainement le plus beau modèle de bateau à roues que j'ai jamais-vu, exceptionnel !
Merci beaucoup pour le compliment!🙏
Incredible work! It's amazing to see her afloat after all the time and effort you put into making the model. I especially liked the detail of using the period-appropriate US flag!
Thank you, I appreciate your comment!
The pleasure of finally watching the model "walking by" certainly makes it worth all that time and effort spent!
Wow!! UUUUhhhhhhhh....... the genius at work here! I'm stunned.
Those who built these amazing steamboat "flyers" 175 years ago were the geniuses!
Thank you for the comment! 👍
Phenomenal
Thank you for the compliment, John!
BRAVO!!!
I have been waiting to see her maiden voyage and the experience is far better than I had hoped. You have built yourself a true steamship my good Sir! Outstanding accomplishment 👏
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
The journey to get to this "maiden voyage" was a long one!
Watching her underway, with the steady rocking motion of the beam is quite a sight!
Thank you for your kind comments, well appreciated! 🙏
this is amazing! so rare to see somebody make a sidewheeler, bravo!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Most passenger sidewheelers have these beautiful sheer lines! And I also think they are the most interesting ships to build! 🙏
Fantastic! The Craftsmanship!
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! 🙏
Congratulations on a successful launch. Tons of hard work went into this!
Yes, tons of fun all along the way too!
Thanks for congrats, I appreciate it!
@@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG Thanks for your response! I’ve always been a fan of these lake steamers. Disney built two of them for the Florida park, since scrapped. I’m sure you’re familiar with the Ticonderoga in Vermont. Amazing story there. Thanks for sharing your hard work!
So you certainly also know about the other surviving walking beam steamboat, the Eureka!
She has a wooden hull and an engine with two sets of eccentrics and hooks!
I'm glad you appreciate the "hard work" Thank you!
@@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG Indeed I do know about the Eureka! I went about that’s ferry in the mid 60s. It was retired and part of a maritime museum. It was fascinating to see the engine and paddle wheels. It would be amazing if it could be restored and operated for occasional trips on the bay. Very interesting subject!
She did go through an extensive cosmetic restoration since then!
I doubt occasional trips will happen anytime soon...but who knows! 👍
That is an awe inspiring piece of work. My hat is off to you.
I'm honoured by your comment, Thank you!🙏
This is beyond awesome. I love it. Thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed watching, thank you! 🙏👍
@@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG I worked on tugboats all my working life. I'm thinking of building a classic wood tug model with a steam engine.
That's a carrer!
And you will have fun building a live steam model, guaranteed!
Master piece!!
Thank you !!
Top one
Thank you!
You definitely made a few "Top ones" too!👍
❤
i coulnt tell if it was a full sized one or a model in the tumbnail good job!
I'm glad you appreciated it!
A full size one would be amazing!
...but unfortunately would by far NOT conform to today's regulations...
The very last "boilers on the guards" steamboats went extinct 100 years ago!
Thank you for your comment!
Breathtaking! This says an old german steamboat modeller! I know the difficultis of this models with big superstructure - one must avoide toplast. I made the "Mt. Washington" with walking beam engine and boiler in the middle of the hull, but I had to extend the height of the hull. it seems, that your excellent casco has the original scale height of the hull?
Thank you for your interest and comments!
Of course, as usual, I adapted draft and shape below waterline to fit my needs (all my metal models are heavier than should be at scale.
I hope you will show us a video of your Mt-Washington!
Stunningly beautiful! What is the scale of this model and where could you buy those beautiful miniature figures?
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it!
Not sure you can buy those anymore...
I made this video, it has a written description with some info :
Thomas Powell's "Preiser passengers"

@@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG Thank you. I now realized that I have one box, unpainted of those vintage figures, original from Preiser. I hope someday those passengers get to be on board to one of my model boat!:)
What is the song at the beginning called?
That's a Hudson River steamboat song! (I love it!) It's name is "Francis Skiddy Polka", and was composed for the Captain of that boat, which appeared on the river in 1852!
I'm currently "scratch building" a much earlier model, the steamboat "North America", as she first appeared on the Hudson River, back in 1839... nevertheless, I picked the song again for "part one"!
