There is an old business adage, you hire personality and you teach skill. While it doesn't directly translate to sports, the lesson is the same. It's far better to have 7 or 8 good players than it is to have 1 or 2 NBA caliber players. I think that's what Mark Pope did. He went out and got great men, who could also play basketball. There isn't a single person on that team who is a problem in or out of the locker room. When you have a team of guys who love one another, love their coach, and love playing basketball....they will be successful. Will they win a championship? That's yet to be determined. But I love this Kentucky team and I love Coach Pope. He was exactly what Kentucky basketball needed when they needed it. Another 3 or 4 years under the previous coaching staff and Kentucky would have been relegated to a lower tier team.
True. You actually have to be able to coach, and not just during practice. Cal all but quit coaching in game once that ridiculous 'dribble-drive' (wtf does that even mean? how else can you drive the ball w/o dribbling?) offense became the end-all for him. But even moreso, after he couldn't win a title w/ that LOADED '15 team, he just decided to let guys go get their own shot to impress pro scouts to get as many to the pros as possible.
I think its better to recruit small school prospects who have consistently produced at that level, have the measurables, and are just happy for the opportunity to play at a higher level. These type of players don't have an attitude of entitlement, but are hardworking and itching to prove themselves against better talent.
As a Kansas State fan, I can definitely say that the buy in and effort from our team is not at the level it needs to be (for a multitude of reasons). There just seems to be so little cohesion and passion on the team full of newcomers.
I love how this squad thinks that they're God's gift to basketball. How can you realistically make any sort of analysis of NIL spend less than 30% of the way through the season? Strange.
IU laid an egg in the last 7-minutes in Nebraska. The most likely outcome for them will be some improvement and still struggle to make the field of 68.
People will eventually realize that Iowa State has the best strategy in the portal. Forget where guys are ranked and forget the guys asking for millions. Go aggressively after good culture and personality fits that will fight like hell for the name on the front of the jersey.
Coleman Hawkins was a lock to the biggest bust of the year. @@Cooliewhistles Didn't spend even close to the numbers they are throwing around for some of these high school kids. I don't actually think we had the biggest NIL deal, NIL was only part of the reason he came to Tennessee.
I gotta say this. I told you so, you were not right from the beginning of last summer. You and the media guys weren't good at your evaluations. You weren't even close on quite a few. Even on generational players' evaluations.

Not sure I’d put Arkansas in the same group of “poor” NIL returns with Indiana and definitely Kansas State. Things feel pretty good now and Aidoo is finally healthy (very much not the case in the 2 losses). Johnell def not living up to his price, though. Wouldn’t say there was a problem with the strategy, though.
Not sure about that. Arkansas has beat one marginal top 25 team and lost to every other tier 1 opponent. Theyve done nothing so far with that roster. Just a bunch of tier 3 wins.
@@MrZenigame huh? Facts are facts . Go look it up. I know you got Internet. Actually you probably don't have to look it up. Kentucky fans have a spreadsheet with every stat Arkansas has because you guys are obsessed with our team more than your own.

Bad coaching, talent evaluation, and bad fit doesn't mean NIL causes problems. CFB is totally different. Best players play the position they play yeah there are schemes but it’s not even close to the same. To say UK could 'lose 15 games in conf. play' is just dumb. How the hell can a team that's already beaten Duke & Gonzaga lose 15 conf. games? Also, every team has injuries. Incl. UK, who won two games w/o their top 2 PGs.
If these guys are clowns Michael pesky then all guys are clowns in sports because 90-95% agree with them. Let's me real cal just takes whatever 5 star he can get for the $ and puts him on the team there isn't not strategy to it no fit . That's cal in a nutshell

Mark Pope was able to bring in an ENTIRE team of transfers and is #4 in the country! Money doesn’t mean shit if you can’t evaluate talent

Coach Pope has gone into a little detail about evaluating guys who did specific things well and looking for system fits as well as character fits.
Pope is also a really good coach...that matters too. just look at Indiana.
Ugonna did tie or break the rupp arena record for blocks against ole Miss, so saying he’s done nothing isn’t really correct.
We keep hearing "need that one or two NBA-bound talent to win a natty"...no you dont. If that were the case Cal would have multiple champs...
