Hi Kelly! I'm watching from Highland Lakes, NJ - up in Sussex county. I just found your channel today. Last summer I started to really get into gardening so I am a beginner and have made a lot of mistakes, but I am sure I will get the hang of it eventually! Last spring, my husband and I planted two hydrangea bushes called "Let's Dance Blue Jangles Bigleaf Hydrangea." The leaves looked great all summer. It grew a lot from the time we planted it, but only produced flowers around the bottom of the plant. I am hoping they will do better this year. Thank you for all the great hydrangea videos! You have a lot of great tips and you are great at explaining things. Thank you!

Hi Janie, looks like we are garden neighbors here in the Garden state💃🌸. Hydrangeas sometimes take a while to get established with lots of blooms. Sounds like good news though that you did have some blooms the first year .
There’s a chance you may have too much nitrogen in the soil . This will cause your hydrangeas to have gorgeous lush leaves and they will look healthy but there probably won’t be any blooms. Too much nitrogen inhibits bloom production even though it encourages lush foliage . If you can , have your soil tested by a local university or buy a do it your self soil testing kit .
Here is a link for soil testing in your state..
      ⬇️
State by state list of soil testing places
      gardeningproductsreview.com/state-by-state-list-soil-testing-labs-cooperative-extension-offices/
Also make sure your hydrangeas are getting enough sunlight and water . They love water and seen them referred to as the drunks of the garden 🌸😊.
Here is some information I found on the internet explaining how to lower nitrogen in your soil if the tests show the level is too high...
Too much nitrogen in soil can harm plants, but while adding nitrogen is relatively easy, removing excess nitrogen in soil is a little trickier. Reducing nitrogen in garden soil can be done if you have patience and a little knowledge. Let’s look at how to amend too much nitrogen in the soil. Tips for Lowering Soil Nitrogen Content Using Plants That Will Reduce Nitrogen in Garden Soil In order to remove excess nitrogen in soil, you need to bind the nitrogen that is in the soil to something else. Fortunately, as a gardener, you probably grow many things that bind nitrogen - in other words, plants. Any plant will use some nitrogen in the soil, but plants like squash, cabbage, broccoli and corn use up large amounts of nitrogen while growing. By growing these plants where there is too much nitrogen in soil, the plants will use up the excess nitrogen. Be aware though, that while they will grow there, plants may look sickly and will not produce many fruits or flowers. Keep in mind that you are not growing these plants for food purposes, but rather as sponges that will help lower soil nitrogen content. Using Mulch for Removing Excess Nitrogen in Soil Many people use mulch in their garden and have problems with the mulch depleting the nitrogen in the soil as it breaks down. When you have too much nitrogen in the soil, you can use this normally frustrating problem to your benefit. You can lay mulch over the soil with too much nitrogen to help draw out some of the excess nitrogen in the soil. In particular, cheap, dyed mulch works well for this. Cheap, dyed mulch is generally made from scrap soft woods and these will use higher amounts of nitrogen in the soil as they break down. For this same reason, sawdust can also be used as a mulch to help reduce nitrogen in the soil. When you have too much nitrogen in soil, your plants may look lush and green, but their ability to fruit and flower will be greatly reduced. While you can take steps towards reducing nitrogen in garden soil, it’s best to avoid adding too much nitrogen to the soil in the first place. Use organic or chemical fertilizers with nitrogen carefully. Test your soil before you add any nitrogen to the soil to avoid having excess nitrogen in your soil. 👋🏼 from Salt Lake City Utah!
I’m new to your channel and wanted to share the verities of hydrangeas I’m growing (admittedly I went a little nuts this season planting hydrangeas ☺️)
Limelight both hedge form and a standard tree, Tough Stuff, Tiny Tough Stuff, Fire and Ice, Next Generation Pistachio, Strawberry Sundae, and Miss Saori. Some of those verities were planted last season but most were planted late this season as very tiny 1 quart plants so it’ll be a bit before I get the big beautiful show of blooms; but oh man when I do, it’s going to be glorious! Well that’s if they all survive since we had an early freeze only 3 days after I planted the hedge of fire and ice, and the tiny tough stuff. 🥶🤞🏼

So glad you shared these varieties with our Flower Tribe in case others like me ( who can never get enough of the hydrangea love ) want to check them out . Mother Nature can be tricky with the early freezes but i'll bet your hydrangeas survive. They are usually pretty hardy. Please send pictures in spring and summer when they all start to bloom . You are going to be swimming in flowers ! Well done flower friend . 👏🌺

Hi from Denver. It seems to me to be better to buy only hydrangeas that bloom on new wood, being that if the stems are destroyed in the winter, you will not get blooms.on them That way there is no question as to when to prune also. Just prune in the spring.and you know there will be plenty of blooms.

So if I cut them down and don't get blooms this year, will I be able to get blooms next year?

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

You’re chances of getting blooms from endless summer and nikko are usually better if you don’t prune them back .
As you saw , if they are pruned back at the wrong time you may cut off the new blooms .
However, there are a number of other reasons people don’t get blooms including having too much nitrogen in the soil and getting a winter zap ( I made videos explains these)
      LUSH LEAVES BUT NO BLOOMS?

WINTER ZAP - WHY ARENT MY HYDRANGEAS BLOOMING ?
      ➡️ th-cam.com/video/Q9t0uykceB4/w-d-xo.html
I will be posting a video soon explaining a few other reasons people don’t get hydrangea blooms . These reasons include , too little sun, too much or too little water or planting them in a planting zone they are not meant for .
Good luck with your hydrangea blooms next year . 👍🤗🌸

Super hydrangea wiestion👏👏👍 if they have to be pruned , your best bet is just as the flowers start to fade but not too late into Aug . Sometimes bids are already forming in August . You can always just give them a deadhead if you like to play it safe . Here is a video I made explaining this

Hi Navy Nurn, I have a feeling a lot of hydrangea varieties will wilt due to the strong heat in your neck of the woods . here is some information i found on growing hydrangeas in hot sunny climates . You may want to try one or two varieties out . i would plant them in an area that gets morning sun and afternoon shade . Also , make sure you give your hydrangeas plenty of water to keep them hydrated. Here is the info i found online ...⬇
Sun Tolerant Hydrangeas: Heat Tolerant Hydrangeas For Gardens Hydrangeas By: Mary H. Dy
er, Credentialed Garden Writer Image by AliLooney Hydrangeas are old-fashioned, popular plants, beloved for their impressive foliage and showy, long-lasting blooms available in a variety of colors. Hydrangeas are appreciated for their ability to thrive in cool, moist shade, but some types are more heat and drought tolerant than others. If you live in a warm, dry climate, you can still grow these spectacular plants. Read on for more tips and ideas about hydrangeas that take heat. Tips on Hydrangeas That Take Heat Keep in mind that even sun tolerant hydrangeas and heat tolerant hydrangeas benefit from afternoon shade in hot climates, as too much direct sun can wilt the leaves and stress the plant. Also, even relatively drought tolerant hydrangea shrubs need water during hot, dry weather - sometimes every day. So far, there are no truly drought tolerant hydrangea shrubs, although some are more tolerant of dry conditions than others. Rich, organic soil and a layer of mulch will help keep the soil moist and cool. Sun Tolerant Hydrangea Plants Smooth hydrangea (H. arborescens) - Smooth hydrangea is native to the eastern United States, as far south as Louisiana and Florida, so it is accustomed to warmer climates. Smooth hydrangea, which reaches heights and widths of about 10 feet, displays dense growth and attractive grayish-green leaves. Bigleaf hydrangea (H. macrophylla) - Bigleaf hydrangea is an attractive shrub with shiny, toothed leaves, a symmetrical, rounded shape and a mature height and width of 4 to 8 feet. Bigleaf is divided into two flower types - lacecap and mophead. Both are among the most heat-tolerant hydrangeas, although mophead prefers a bit more shade. Panicle hydrangea (H. paniculata) - Panicle hydrangea is one of the most sun tolerant hydrangeas. This plant needs five to six hours of sunlight and won’t grow in full shade. However, morning sunlight and afternoon shade is best in hot climates, as the plant won’t do well in intense, direct sunlight. Panicle hydrangea reaches heights of 10 to 20 feet and sometimes more, although dwarf varieties are available. Oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia) - Native to the southeastern United States, oakleaf hydrangeas are hardy, heat tolerant hydrangeas that reach heights of about 6 feet. The plant is appropriately named for the oak-like leaves, which turn reddish bronze in autumn. If you’re looking for drought tolerant hydrangea shrubs, oakleaf hydrangea is one of the best; however, the plant will still need moisture during hot, dry weather.
