- ARTIST TO ARTIST MONOCAST: Episode-1:Philip Svosve
A lot of valuable information is lost because no one wants to sit down with ordinary band members, producers, back vocalists, and everyone else who works behind the scenes because their stories will not go viral on the internet. But they, too, have a story to share.
So, in preparation for my book launch and birthday celebration, I am hosting a very short series in which I sit down with just a few of the aforementioned people and hear their stories, in the hopes that as a nation, we can learn a thing or two about the nature of the cutthroat music industry.
In this first episode, I speak with Mdara Philip Svosve, a saxophonist who has performed with James Chimombe, Mukadota, the Ocean City Band, Thomas Mapfumo, Jabavu Drive, and other artists. His too has a story to tell.

Good to see Phillip again after 59 years. Went to school together from 1963 to 1965.
Great stuff from my Father. And thank you murumbwana. We need. More of this
Mukoma Mono muri dura rezivo. Thanks so much for trying to preserve our music legends's history. The untold behind the scenes stories. Just hearing circumstances that helped musicians compose certain songs like Chimombe's Kudakwashe. I have always wanted to know more about Philip Svosve. Ini hangu ndakatangira kuvaziva nebhosvo ravairova kwaJames Chimombe. He's a legend in his own right. An unsung hero. I hope you plan to have more interviews like this.
Ok success ndiyani aiva band leader
"Thank you for bringing Mdhara Svove onto the podcast. As a saxophonist, I've been eager to learn about his journey for a long time; I was even considering searching for him myself. You've made it much easier. His solo on 'Masutu' is one of my favorites."
I love these interviews with legends, it makes us feel closer to the yesteryear music times. Big up Mono and mdara Svosve. by the way who played saxophone pa "Bindura" ndingade vazondiridzirawo on 1 of my songs.
The difference between music from the past and music today is that music is a reflection of that era. The 50s 60s and 70s was the golden era of music fun love and peace and the musicians of that era were able to express it as it was. They were very creative. Today's music just reflects the chaos that we live in. The Temptations expressed that better in the song Ball of confusion.
I have been enlightened🤗🏃🏿
Thank you so much mukoma Mono, I really enjoyed each ad every moment. Please keep it up we need more of these podcasts anopindura imwe yemubvunzo yatagara tinayo pamadhara edu ekare aya
I've personally followed this artist before relocating outside Zimbabwe way back in 1993.
Had a chance to chat with him in person at Harare's Federal Hotel about 15 years back.
Looks like he is still going strong and wish him the best.
Thanks Mono. Thank you mzukuru wangu Svosve!
This is so informative, very enlightening and thought-provoking. It answers many questions about some factors that influence the growth of the Zim music industry. The politics, arrogance, ignorance, self-centeredness and issues around visions & professionalism. Another book Mono!
Thanx Rute
Thanx for this, mudhara Svosve haachembere zvekumhanya
He speaks like someone I have heard speak, but can't put my hand on who 😮
One thinng im noticing is kudhara Musicians would sign contracts and they knew whats in the contract.
That was a great interview, keep it up
Mdhara Svosve, unassuming and always down to earth.RIP Timmy Makaya.
This is great elder Mono if you follow up on those other names mentioned na mudhara Svisve the history will be tight.
Svosve the legend
Thank you for opening up on politics and payment in music bands.Kushandisana chete.Mono will need someone to interview you again about how you guys were fired by Oliver ,no holds barred 😂.That was my best line up of Tuku’s band .Replacing Never Mpofu by some gospel artist felt was stingy on Tuku’s part. The kid was not bad though
Band leader Mdhara Svosve and Ocean city
Gogogogo karingahore was classic.
Somehow James was right paakati mudanga hamugari mabhuru 2, its best kuti pave ne just 1 lead singer mu band, pakaita more than 1 lead singer the group won't last long, I think thats why ma groups even ku gospel chaiko achizo splitta, panongoda bhuru 1 chete mudanga.
