If that's the case, then it might be a pun on the word "crone" which is a usually derogatory term for an older woman. In stories an old crone might be accused of being a witch. Since 0wned is pronounced like owned. So the achievement name might've been intended to be pronounced as "crone-d" rather than sounding like crown, but players just looked at it and said crowned instead, which makes perfect sense. This is all conjecture, but I wouldn't put it past valve, their achievement names tend to be pretty clever.
I always thought it's called "crowning" because the "crown" are the bullets you're firing from your shotgun, and when you shoot the witch in the head, you're lodging all these bullets into her skull so she's wearing a crown made up of a bunch of shotgun pellets.
this is most notable on the parish second map right before the bus stop. if you find a witch there, trigger her and close the door, she cant get in and is infinitely stuck running towards you
I think the standing witch is faster than a sitting witch, due to her zombie muscles being more active than the sitting witch who's probably been sitting for hours
That and because the sitting witch is probably in a weakened state during night time than day time, probably confirms that she is stronger thanks to the sun.
The bot once anger the witch because it just staight up running into it when fighting a horde, but the game said "You has startle the witch" and then it start chasing me instead, like wtf man.
Crowning makes sense. "A triumphant culmination of an effort or endeavour" is a pretty good description of one-shotting a boss infected, and it was an achievement in L4D1
7:10 - just want to clarify: she technically doesn't attack if you're "in her way for too long". If you touch her twice in a short amount of time, she will change target. However, she won't change target if the original target is close enough to her. This can be seen when your friend is close behind you whilst being chased by her. But if she has literally no other path to take, or is forced to take a longer route, she will still target you despite her original target being close. An example would be the grey "tunnels" in the third chapter of No Mercy, in the sewers. If you get in her way, she'll push you once, when the stumbling animation is over, if you touch her again that's when she'll change target to you, but if a targeted teammate is close enough to her, she will continue pushing you instead in an attempt to kill them. 7:18 to 7:43 - The witch does not swipe at players blocking her target. She will only swipe at common infected (there was a lot of them in the clip you used) if they touch her. This swipe will NOT damage any player except her target. At 7:26, Rochelle is not her target, she is going for Louis, it is not randomized, she tried to swipe at Louis, but he backed off and Rochelle was in the way. Considering Rochelle wasn't the Witch's target, the swipe didn't damage her. It's like the common infected's swing, it's kind of a "blank swipe", it only damages common infected in range and her target, nothing else. 7:32 - You must've touched her at least once, so touching her against didn't play the stumbling animation. Everytime you touch a witch a second time while she's startled, her target will change to you and the stumbling animation will not play, unless it's been long enough so that you can touch her again. Not sure how long the cooldown is, however. That is why she killed you there even if she was trying to get someone else. Contrary to popular belief, staring at her or staying close to her does not change anything, as long as you don't touch her twice. 7:38 - She is in a "burning idle" state. She killed her target or lost them, she will not attack anything, even if common infected or her target (if she lost them) get close. Edit: Little side note: if you aren't her target, and if you touch her while jumping or falling, she will instantly change target to you. It still takes into account if her target is close or not, so if her target isn't close, do NOT jump out of her way, as that'll completely cancel the stumbling and she will go after you in one push.
For anyone wondering the best melee to kill a witch with is the nightstick because it is the fastest melee, of course excluding doing the melee switch trick which can be pulled off on any melee, so if you have a shovel which has a very slow attack speed you can just switch to your primary and back to the melee
You need fast melee weapons if you wanna do the jumping trick behind her, if you have a slow melee weapon such as an axe, then you're gonna have to get lucky and move away from her, not just jump and continue attacking.
For slower melees it can involve luck the axe can get a forth hit before her second attack just barely but it depends what attack animation she does. Some hit you earlier than others.
A moment I’ll never forget is this one time I had a decade ago in (I believe) “Blood Harvest”. We got to a small building on the path, & the way through was a small corridor. As soon as I rounded the corner: right on the other side, was a witch.. staring me face to face. No shotgun to crown her with, I just froze & stared back for a split second before backing off.
YEEEEEE i remember when i first discovered crowning and i always died cause i thought you were actually supposed to shoot them in the head up close with a shotgun and not have all the pellets hit i was so confused and thought i was doing something wrong xD
Fun fact, if you throw a molotov and before said molotov hits her, you go afk, the witch will be confused and won´t chase you, as if she landed on a prop with fire in it, this also can be done with gas cans, but the timing is a bit more tricky, mostly good on realism if you have no other choice but to kill her.
@@nascoz3884 yeah, i know, but i just wanted to throw this glitch out there just because, could be pretty useful for someone playing realism with a friend (this also works on l4d1 lel)
I also learned recently the witchs freak out timer will tick up if you're too close even if you're behind a wall if she is in her startled state, she won't if she's idle. So rounding a corner to deaggro getting passed her doesnt work if she's already close to attacking
Found this out in a SI training map, I snuck over to a sitting witch, partially aggro’d it, then ran around the corner. Although the witch didn’t get fully triggered and start running at me, the witch was still staring at me, still angry, instead of going back to crying. It only went back to it’s normal state after I went further away after losing line of sight, very interesting
4:22 My theory is, each shotgun pellet/bullet represents a crown's spikes or gems, it simbolizes how much royalty you are for the team to take down the witch alone and with only 1 shot.
Idk if I’m correct but from just watching like 2 HS top videos The standing witch only appears when it’s daytime in a campaign or map, while the sitting witch only appears during night time Not really an explanation, but with the daytime and nighttime in question, the witch only runs faster when she’s standing only because the morning/walking state is when she’s actively moving, while night/sitting state is her laying dormant/resting It doesn’t affect normal running speed, but the fire damage maybe hinders a witch when she’s resting
Valve's balancing is weird. The Witch on Easy "Realism" takes away only half your health but suddenly can end you instantly on Normal "Realism". But on regular Easy difficulty, she downs you instantly. Then again, Valve also decided that Realism shouldn't effect the Desert Eagle and AK for some reason.
5:15 the sitting witch is slower because of the crouching penalty not being removed, it’s coded, but it happens so fast it’s not reliable! Witch speed gets sped up by a flat multiplier, and either way she’s faster than running speed. Valve said “eh, both versions still can outrun any player, so it don’t matter right?”
5:25 while I agree with this statement, the differences help highlight the unique aspect of the witch, in that despite having claws that would make Freddy want a Mrs. Krueger, the witch surprisingly keeps a lot of (mostly phycological.) human traits throughout her infection with the rabies like virus we know as the green flu. Thought I would specify that last part because, while I would be fine with calling the zombies whatever type of zombie you wanted to call them, I draw the line at using points in your videos that line up with the rotting corpse zombie despite the left for dead zombies not being those types of zombies, such as in your realism is nonsense video when you say that “these rotting shambling corpses can somehow tank a massive amount of ammunition to the body.” (In that particular example, it would be mute because humans are not as fragile as corpses, and while the zombies are mentally no longer human, most of them are still physically human, *most of them anyways,* who the hell knows what the jockey or charger are anymore, besides zombies of course.). Anyways back to godamn point, one of the many human traits witches retain are a sleep cycle, or well, a sudo sleep cycle anyways, when you catch them out at night they are slower to respond and get more bogged down by distractions, such as being set on fire.

You can also Kill a Sitting Witch with a Auto Shotgun. U have to approach her wait until she slighty gets up and Blast her in the Face with it. Works everytime. It only Works with the Auto, not with the Spaz 12 as the Spaz shoots slower than the Auto. Also works in L4D1
something you didn't mention: In campaign mode, you can set the witch on fire without causing her to enrage. If you throw a molotov, then go idle before the molotov lands, the witch will just stumble around until it burns to death.
With all this considered, sitting witch is more dangerous than standing witch. Sitting witch startles instantly, but standing witch suffers no spedd penalty when set on fire.
I think players should prepare ahead of time to face one of the two variants, depending if it's nighttime in the campaign. It's sometimes the best to let the bots startle her if you can't bypass her. Also, huge advice. Don't shoot while near the wandering witch, as she will scream and get startled. I had this happen and barely crowned her ass. Also, the who shoots her thing, that only applies to the wandering witch. If you shoot her and she screams, but is not startled, then another player shoots her during that phase, she will go after them when startled. I think the wandering witch is faster when on fire because it made sense to counter the original molotov/fire ammo idea, which make the sitting witch a joke if you can run away safely (I like the change of pace). It also makes sense that she's faster because she's standing/walking to begin with. I also discovered that the witch will always be the sitting variant in finales of all campaigns if she spawns, unless she is affected by mutations like Witch Hunt.
The crown of your head is located at the very top of your skull. You may also sometimes see it referred to as the vertex. Like other parts of your skull, the crown works to provide protection and support for the tissues of your head, including your brain.
From what I remember there is some oversight so you first need to startle Standing witch with anything else before setting her on fire for her to slow down. Day (Wandering / Walking) Witch - cares much less about flash lights, to some sources it is same as without flashlight. Logic - it is bright already and in her default animations she covers her face. First anger then set on fire. Setting Witch on Fire or billing her can change her agro, which also means, it changes her agro from dead players, allowing her to kill more. Stumbling her will also slow her down, but with same logic for Day Witch, first she need to startle her ("X startled the Witch" is a good indicator for that) Small reminder that despite L4D2 superiority, it was rushed and never fully patched.
Fun fact: another youtuber said in local servers if you throw a explosive at the witch once it blows up the witch just... evaporates (that's what he said)
ok you want a theory about why sitting witch can be slower than a standing witch maybe because the standing witch keeps walking for days and sitting witches aren't prepared to suddenly run
someones probably already said this but. crowning comes from the Cr0wned achievement whichrequires you to crown a witch. the achievement is a mix of P0wned from the days of leet speak meaning defeated and crones which are old women or witches.
Looked up the definition of crowning. This is from steam and what is mentioned "This achievement's name is a pun, but the basis of the pun is disputed. Some feel it is a combination of "crone" and "0wnd", others say it is a "1337" form of crowned."
the standing flaming witch is only faster if fire is the first type of damage you inflict. its because the flame cancels her scream, which resets her speed back to running. if you startle her first and then set her ablaze, her speed will properly slow down
You can also break her AI a bit if you throw molotov at her and go afk with a bind before molotov lands, once on fire, she won't know who to target and just stumble around while burning.
I finished Hard Rain single player realism without startling any witches (except the first one because I was unfamiliar with the map). I did this by turning off my lights, pressing shift to walk slower, and keeping my distance to them.
It's not pronounced "crown" as in "something you put on your head." It's pronounced "crone" as in "old crone" AKA WITCH. It's a play on not just one but two words! You crOWN a witch because you OWN the witch with a single shot.
Come here after watching your Bot Nonsense video, if you play with bots then the bots cannot sneak pass the witch and will always trigger her off, really annoying.
3:29 The Boomer explosion in Vs DOES NOT trigger the witch i wanted to do that trick, spawned as a boomer, provoque an attack, get killed and....nothing....
If she's in a room that is not on your way, avoid her, otherwise attack her. Sometimes I thow an item at a random part of the map in the sky and it falls on the Witch and she goes after me. Sometimes I shoot Zombies and it goes through the wall and hits her, so yeah I agree. I especially kill her as fast as possible in Versus so the other team can't use her against us.
Ima be honest, ever since left 4 dead ive always stuck by the "dont anger witch unless she is in the way" because i prefer to not risk any of my team being downed if it can be helped...
The reason why the witch disappear in console, is because it only happens in local servers, and you will find a l4d2 player dead rather than playing on someone's elses own server, but in xbox the only way to play is p2p so, they don't have many options, in pc on local servers the witch can be vanished from existence by ANYTHING that explodes, even explosive rounds, so you can desintegrate the witch with 1 m16 shot, and I think Francis has a big bad ass
There are three things you must be made aware of about "Popping the witch out of existance". For starters, you can pop her out on xbox but only if certain conditions are met. Number 2, you can also do it only pc if certain conditions are met. Number 3, left 4 dead was made for the xbox 360, as that was the only thing powerful enough to run it and valve was done with Sony due to their CPU. Of course, they could have made it for pc only and later port it for Xbox one but... l4d is their least known franchise as it is...
idk why but as a long time playing l4d2 player, i usually never ignores the witch. I always go for the kill regardless of whether it is standing or sitting.
3:51 Me, and my heart was even pounding a bit when she was coming after me. Also, are there any players who use a sniper and shoot the Witch from a distance and shoot the hell out of her while she was charging at you?
5:13 Not wanting to be a nerd but already being, it's just that for some reason in maps that are day, the witch is faster when on fire and slower when on fire at night
I can actually explain the Origin of the term Crowning! the term comes from Left 4 Dead 1 in an Achievement you can earn called "Cr0wned" (Get it? its like a combo of Crown like something you put on a woman's head and the late 2000's term 0wned?) anyways you got this achievement by killing a witch with a single headshot.
this is brutal, but i think the term "crown" refers to the appearance of the bullet wound on the head after a point blank shotgun blast. i have no proof for this, it's just a gut feeling
I just headshot her with a sniper, and then she stumbles which gives you like 1.5 seconds to pepper her with bullets which is very easy considering snipers in l4d2 are op as holy hell
I expected pro L4D2 players to just avoid the witch, they're already very experienced in the avoiding women part.

Small reminder that despite L4D2 superiority, it was rushed and never fully patched.
Fun fact: another youtuber said in local servers if you throw a explosive at the witch once it blows up the witch just... evaporates (that's what he said)
5:50
ok you want a theory about why sitting witch can be slower than a standing witch maybe because the standing witch keeps walking for days and sitting witches aren't prepared to suddenly run
also in real life when we would just sit for many many hours our muscles will get used to just being in place
someones probably already said this but.
crowning comes from the Cr0wned achievement whichrequires you to crown a witch.
the achievement is a mix of P0wned from the days of leet speak meaning defeated and crones which are old women or witches.
Looked up the definition of crowning. This is from steam and what is mentioned
"This achievement's name is a pun, but the basis of the pun is disputed. Some feel it is a combination of "crone" and "0wnd", others say it is a "1337" form of crowned."
i like the use of cry of fear music man, cry of fear is a great game and the usage of the ost? perfect!
Thought "crowning" means that when you shoot a witch head point blank, the splatter from her head goes upward motion and hence forming a sort of crown
I really hated the witch when the bots startled the her and i get attacked by the witch it's annoying
the standing flaming witch is only faster if fire is the first type of damage you inflict. its because the flame cancels her scream, which resets her speed back to running. if you startle her first and then set her ablaze, her speed will properly slow down
Yeah.
I've only crowned a witch only once by accident I crouched in front of her without knowing I looked up at a witch standing up and fired
You can also break her AI a bit if you throw molotov at her and go afk with a bind before molotov lands, once on fire, she won't know who to target and just stumble around while burning.
i belive crowning refers to the crown of the head, which is an area that a point blank shotgun shot to the back of the head should remove
I finished Hard Rain single player realism without startling any witches (except the first one because I was unfamiliar with the map). I did this by turning off my lights, pressing shift to walk slower, and keeping my distance to them.
It's not pronounced "crown" as in "something you put on your head."
It's pronounced "crone" as in "old crone" AKA WITCH. It's a play on not just one but two words!
You crOWN a witch because you OWN the witch with a single shot.
Hm... Thanks for the new knowledge sir
@@nascoz3884 It's actually old knowledge at this point... but it's new to you. I'm glad to be of service!
I always knew crowning meant a hit to the head, thanks to The Three Stooges
Come here after watching your Bot Nonsense video, if you play with bots then the bots cannot sneak pass the witch and will always trigger her off, really annoying.
3:29 The Boomer explosion in Vs DOES NOT trigger the witch
i wanted to do that trick, spawned as a boomer, provoque an attack, get killed and....nothing....
see this is why you always shoot the witch even when she is not blocking a path
If she's in a room that is not on your way, avoid her, otherwise attack her. Sometimes I thow an item at a random part of the map in the sky and it falls on the Witch and she goes after me. Sometimes I shoot Zombies and it goes through the wall and hits her, so yeah I agree. I especially kill her as fast as possible in Versus so the other team can't use her against us.
The top of the human head is called the crown, what the hell is wrong with you all
Cant tell ya how many times I sacrificed myself at the end for the lads at the end online, when a witch would spawn in front of the safe room.
4:26 It’s because the head can be referred to as the “crown”.
yep
I have messed crowning with an auto shotty... multiple times like a fool
"We all go down" - Ellis
Most scary opponent in Left 4 Dead 2
Ima be honest, ever since left 4 dead ive always stuck by the "dont anger witch unless she is in the way" because i prefer to not risk any of my team being downed if it can be helped...
" its required a friend a something short supply in modern day "
Thats offended me yet i agree.
Didnt know that you can crown the witch with xm1014 and spas also, thank you good sir
Crowning has an another meaning of "hit on the head".
8:10 PROPS TO ALEX, HES SUCH A NICE GUY
I just hate when I mistake witch for a common on expert
The reason why the witch disappear in console, is because it only happens in local servers, and you will find a l4d2 player dead rather than playing on someone's elses own server, but in xbox the only way to play is p2p so, they don't have many options, in pc on local servers the witch can be vanished from existence by ANYTHING that explodes, even explosive rounds, so you can desintegrate the witch with 1 m16 shot, and I think Francis has a big bad ass
It's not peer-to-peer, it's still client-server; just not a dedicated server.
@@KopperNeoman peer to peer is a local server, conecting to someone pc
There are three things you must be made aware of about "Popping the witch out of existance".
For starters, you can pop her out on xbox but only if certain conditions are met.
Number 2, you can also do it only pc if certain conditions are met.
Number 3, left 4 dead was made for the xbox 360, as that was the only thing powerful enough to run it and valve was done with Sony due to their CPU.
Of course, they could have made it for pc only and later port it for Xbox one but... l4d is their least known franchise as it is...
1:27 COMBO MELEE BEAT DOWN YEAH
idk why but as a long time playing l4d2 player, i usually never ignores the witch. I always go for the kill regardless of whether it is standing or sitting.
at night the witch is sitting she will have less dps but during the day when lit on fire her dps increases
You get 1 tapped no matter what difficulty dude. The difference being expert and Realism
What are the nun skins you are using at 2:24?
I really don't know/remember. Sorry.
You break my heart
Great words at the end
How to beat Tank in expert on close quarters with only 4 survivors? Only bots team
While the tank is pummeling people you can melee it.
@@nascoz3884 But it's hard with [Hard-Mode] Improved Tank AI mod and tank spawn on every chapter. Expert with this mod make tanks super smart af
The sitting witch's legs are asleep, that's why she doesn't run as fast as the standing witch.
Lmao if that was the case I doubt she’d be able to run at all, that shi hurts
Oh I'd like her to flash me instead...
4:25 I WAS CONFUSED TOO LOL 5.9.23
and in a shotgun theres a total of 8-9 pellots
4:30 france.
thats how.
crazy
1:32 Oh my... I heared cod bo2 main menu theme...
i actually think that when you shot the boomer next to the witch it isint the explode its actually you hitting a pellot with the witch
I can actually explain the Origin of the term Crowning!
the term comes from Left 4 Dead 1 in an Achievement you can earn called "Cr0wned" (Get it? its like a combo of Crown like something you put on a woman's head and the late 2000's term 0wned?) anyways you got this achievement by killing a witch with a single headshot.
gg
this is brutal, but i think the term "crown" refers to the appearance of the bullet wound on the head after a point blank shotgun blast.
i have no proof for this, it's just a gut feeling
maybe my game is bugged ort something. because my flashlight for some reason never ever startles the witch
It makes her stand up faster.
It wanta you to avoid her, yet it sticks her in every single fucking door way it can find. Forcing you to fight her
Me when there's a witch:
*Throws Molotov*
RUUUUNNN FUCKING RUUUNNN
I just headshot her with a sniper, and then she stumbles which gives you like 1.5 seconds to pepper her with bullets which is very easy considering snipers in l4d2 are op as holy hell
I know it’s hard to hear but what is the song at 7:28
cr0wning looks like "crowning" like a king's crown or a baby crowning but by the act in-game rhymes with owning like honing like when you 0wn n00bs
Yes
Shout-out to Nascoz for not using a horny-bait thumbnail for something relating to the witch
I remember playing l4d2 on Xbox and witch never disappeared after pipe bomb
6:44 really tho? isnt the rainstorm in Hard rain happening during night? whar about all those witches in the sugar mill?
