  • Through her inspiring talk, Aashna tries to throw light on the fact that one does not have to judge a person's ability, aspirations and desires by gender. She highlights the stereotypes that exist in the society against women.
Aashna Jalan is a Chemical Engineering Undergrad in the Institute of Chemical Technology. She believes in the embracing her inner nerd but does not let that restrict her from exploring new avenues. She is also passionate about the performing and fine arts. However, her staunch feminism stems from classes which almost always had more boys than girls and career conversations which constantly revolved marriage. She would like to share her experiences as a teenager growing up in a gender-stereotyped society working her way through a male-dominated field.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

It was a wonderful talk with amazing insights from daily life of a STEM passionate girl. Now, I guess I understand my counterparts better. By the way, she is my Super Senior now in ICT & I am proud of the fact!😊

The urban population of India might be indiscriminating towards your gender but the rural India is not, which is bad because that's where the majority is. And due to that we miss on the potential of our society by a very large scale.
If you put the work into something that you love you will be good at it. But never believe just because a person loves something doesn't mean you are entitled to it. And no one limitless. And if you believe that you are you might take it really bad when you fail headfirst. It's always best to keep it in mind that each person is unique and what you might think of you is might not actually what you are.
We can always only hope for the best and working towards it all the while preparing for the worst.

She makes some very valid points. Even as late as 2018, IITs have a ratio of 10:1 (boys:girls). I absolutely refuse to believe that girls do not perform as well in the JEE. It just seems to be a career choice not made by girls (for whatever reason, including those she mentions in this talk).
I had the opportunity to work in the top institutions in several countries and it is heartening to see the increase in the number of women in STEM fields. There are many girls who are opting for PhD. Yet, under representation of women in STEM fields is a world wide problem not just in India.
I have advised male as well as female students on their thesis and I can only say that students can only be classified based on their level of commitment and motivation and not gender. However, towards the end of their thesis (towards graduation), some girl students (Indian girl students) had to worry about postponing talks about marriage in addition to looking for a career, which I do find sad. That is implying that the pressure on her to find a job fast is more than that on a boy (all other things being the same). I can only imagine how worse the situation would be for girls from suburban or rural settings.

Still the proportion of women as Doctors is very high even though MBBS requires a lot of years of study and a hefty amount of Tution Fee compared to Engineering...
Still you say women are less in Engineering becoz men are stopping them?LOL...Men couldn't stop them being Doctors how could they stop them becoming Engineers?Even in Sweden the percentage of women in STEM is lower than that in India..

@@selvamvelu758 I never said men are stopping women from becoming engineers. I only went be facts and stats and said there is under representation. Also the societal pressure on women to get married is definitely persistent (may be reduced now) which puts added constraints on them to find a job earlier

Women and men are opposite in gender, both parents are necessary to keep human existence...
Though men and women aren't equal but it doesn't mean that they should not have equal rights...
Don't treat women like women or men like men, treat everyone like a human being...
Let them do what they want to
Let them marry with their lovers bcoz we have to live the whole life with them...not our parents...

I just want to tell 2 things.
1- Yes i mostly afraid that i may offend a girl so i tend to avoid them.
2- Men has better instant decision making then women. ( Can be changed ,idk) that's why you would never see women driving truck or buses. Its requires more experience as well.
I know its a gender stereotypes. But would you give up ur long hair or cut it to you know 1,2 inches (if you are a woman). Ans honestly and why??
