There might be a way for link's mother to have gotten through the Lost woods "safely". There are a few folklore stories that say someone can only see Fay in one of two ways, 1: They are Pure of heart, 2: They are close to death. If Link's mother was injured and close to death, she may have been let through simply because she was close to death anyways and it wouldn't have made much of a difference in if she sees a "Fay" or because she was holding a baby, one of the most innocent things in the world.

That’s something along the lines of what I thought. I have a whole theory I made below!
What if the parts of the triforce (when the triforce is not together) is actually a curse? Like, for example, in OoT, Ganondorf takes the triforce of power and it dives him insane. The Ganon we see as a child is cool, calculated, and won’t kill link and instead laughs at him for trying to oppose him. The adult era Ganon taunts link, has more violent means of dealing with problems (as seen with the banishment of Phantom Ganon), and tries to crush Link and Zelda under his castle when he looses devils volley. The triforce of wisdom has been seen to cause stress and anguish for its users and makes their lives a living hell (as seen in OoT as well). Zelda had to change identity, go through a gender crisis, and live in fear because of it). These are bad, but the worst one is absolutely the triforce of courage. I believe that the soul of the hero is unchanging from incarceration to incarceration of Link but the body and memories of the hero are. So, by this logic, I believe the soul of the hero to be locked in their last adventure’s purgatory until it is needed again (such as Termina in Majora’s Mask being the hero of time’s purgatory). This piece does not allow the user to truly die and I also believe that the goddess implemented these curses on purpose because each piece does grant enormous power and, without balances to that power, the holders may become strong enough to take on the goddess.

The one thing that utterly screws-up every Hero's Spirit/Reincarnation theories isn't the Hero's Shade in Twilight Princess...but the overwhelmingly powerful insinuation that Link from A Link to the Past _is still alive in A Link Between Worlds as Gramps._ Now, it could be that the "warrior spirit of the Hero" left "Gramps" as he aged and wasn't able to save Hyrule as destiny/curse/etc. demands, but is that what the "Hero's Spirit" means?

An interesting theory i saw a few weeks ago on tumblr is the theory that TP Link is not the great grandson of OT Link but his son. That after whatever event killed OT Link, TP Link (as a very young child) tried to use the ocarina to undo his fathers death but instead he was hurled forward in time, which is why he knows Epona's song (either Malon is his mother or Link taught him it), how Rusl came to find him in the woods and why the ocarina disappears from the timeline (because the little TP Link lost it or it became lost in time during the leap). And he was too young and or it was too traumatic to remember it ever happened. I like the idea of this theory, as it both answers questions and is heart breaking.

Actually, thinking about it. The only Links who are known to have been formally trained are also the Links who canonically wield their swords right handed.
SS Link and BotW Link were both formally trained with other knights. Every other Link is implied to either be self taught or was a solitary student (Wind Waker, though Orca favors the pole arm and thus may not have trained Link in the specifics of how to wield a sword).

To add on to your speculation about Link being brought in by the gods, this correlates well with real life: No one within the game itself can get the job done, so the developers have presented the game to you, the player, to bring you in, the chosen hero who can get the job done.

    • @HanayoSora
      @HanayoSora 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

That is an interesting speculation~ To add onto what you said, maybe lore-wise, you, the player, are technically the spirit of the hero that resides in Link! A being that is still subjected to the laws of the Legend of Zelda world, but still an outside force to the golden goddesses and Hylia, hence why it becomes possible for you to help change the fate of Hyrule! ^^

Oh wow both of these are cool!

  • @kenmagoesblep
    @kenmagoesblep 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

I'm not too keen on the idea that Link could be birthed by the goddesses, tbh, but it's an interesting thought and not completely out of the realm of possibility (considering we're talking about TLoZ franchise lol). The goddesses always seem weirdly indifferent to the matters of mortals and it'd be weird to send a boy into the world where, in most games, he has no special abilities whatsoever. Part of the appeal of Link as a character is facing the odds and growing stronger with him.
Personally, I think it probably has to do with how the hero's spirit seems to reincarnate when needed (most of the times...), and not through bloodline like the princesses, and it's possible that a hero cannot rise to his full potential while the spirit is split into more than one body - aka the previous hero (potentially a family member? father?) being alive.
One interesting way Link's family could be introduced in the games without interferring much with the story and pacing would be having his parents be active part of the tutorial sessions of the game. Maybe before going into a big city or joining the hylian troops (or any sort of subplot that justifies Link leaving his hometown), his parents jump in to teach him something that might be useful to him while he's out into the world before he leaves. Maybe some sword techniques, or how to cook some specific dish or potion if that is a mechanic Nintendo keeps in for future games. They're still alive during the game but they don't remain "in your face" after the main plot kicks in. Just a thought, tho!

I would think that Link's mother bringing him to the lost woods would inspire mercy from the Great Deku Tree, as he would be aware they were there. Link was untainted by the world at the time, but his mother was not, hence not being allowed to live.
The Great Deku Tree was very wise and likely could recognize link as the chosen one.

  • @jessicafluffykins3733

About Links mother, until fairly recently a very high percentage of women died in childbirth. It was so common that women would write their wills while pregnant, because the chance of dying was so great. As most Zelda games are in the equivalent of the medieval time period, it makes sense that Links mother is always dead. From a lore point of view, perhaps his mother dying is the key to link being the hero, similar to a blood sacrifice. Whether the sacrifice is good/willing or bad/unwilling is interesting. Take Oot, did his mother willingly die protecting her child, or was she basically murdered in the war? If it was willingly protecting the child, perhaps the gods chose her child to be the hero as a result of her holy sacrifice. If she died unwillingly due to the war, perhaps a evil act is required to trigger link to become the hero. Either way, IMO only death can pay for life.
Love all of your content hyrule gamer, and would love to hear your thoughts on if a sacrifice is needed and if so, is it willingly or not?

Even Oot could still have her die during childbirth maybe she was still pregnant while running away. She still could have gotten injured from the war. Even though it is a bit of a theory, It's also implied that in Lenzo on Windfall Island could be Link's grandfather. He speaks of his days travelling the seas in search of grand monuments to photograph. He mentions that an old flame of his lived on Outset Island. Since Link's grandmother is the only woman around Lenzo's age that lives on Outset, it is likely that Lenzo is Link's grandfather. Just thought this was worth mentioning, as it answers why Link has no present grandfather. Who knows where his parents are though?

In the latest book on the writings and processes of JRR Tolkien, it went into some very specific details regarding aging of Elves and lifecycles, how the “spirit” works within that universe, and a bunch of other miscellaneous topics. In this book, it is described how when an Elf gives birth, a part of their power goes into the “spirit” of their offspring. In certain instances, so much is given to their offspring (or it could be interpreted that their spirit is so strong that it requires a high amount of this “energy”, that it causes the mother to grow weary and essentially pass away
Perhaps the spirit of the hero could act in a similar way. The amount of energy necessitated by the birth of the hero essentially drains life from the mother.

So they were iin the forest temple and then they got attacked by the opposing army (gerudo and evil sheikahs maybe) so they cursed the temple and Link's mom managed to escape getting lost in the forest until she came across the Great Deku Tree.

On the topic of the mother not making it through the Lost Woods reasonably, the way I see it, the Lost Woods acts as a barrier and portal corridor for many zones, thus sacred. Those who wander without guidance or reason tend to meet a fate, or become disoriented. Considering it is within the domain of a guardian deity, the Great Deku Tree, it's not quite far fetched to allow a child of fate, the Hero's Spirit, safe passage into a protected area. The Great Deku tree would surely have sensed it, despite the mothers journey and death. He was a baby after all. For all we know, the mother could sensed it or been guided herself. I like to believe whether blood or bestowed, Links all embody the spirit of the first hero, but remain individual, so even the father, if alive or if ever hosting the HS, could have his own perception of what's to come.
Themes like this is why I really wish we had a third game for the Hero of Time Pre-Hero's Shade, to finally fasten that connection.

Taking a look at it from that angle, it may well have been that Link's mother found her own way through it either by virtue of being on the verge of giving birth or having just given birth shortly before, as that process is it's own potent space between.

I never played Wind Waker, maybe if it comes to switch but I didn't know Link had a sister. This could actually open up some possibilities for the next main line Zelda game if Zelda herself isn't playable in botw 2. Link and his sister playing in an open world with a good comedic relationship would be rather entertaining, pulling off tag team combos between swords and arrows or possible future co-op play(not mandatory) but it'd seriously expand on the series of the damsel in distress theme which there is nothing wrong with. It'd give a stronger presence to female roles while not taking away from Link the hero, and its the perfect way to introduce this, is by saying that the Tri force of courage split in half in a prior game maybe during botw 3 hypothetically speaking(no one would expect the plot in the forth game of his sister appearing). Continuing, the struggle to rid the world of its evil one last time caused the tri force itself to break creating two hero's into the future. Ofcourse the triforce would become whole again eventually but it doesn't mean his sister would cease to exist. It just shifts the focus back to the hero himself, not taking away from the Zelda franchise and Nintendo likes money so its a good idea for them. I'm no theorist but when it comes to writing possible sequels I think my ideas sound pretty plausible

I still wonder at the theory that BotW Link's mom might have been Gerudo; something about his armband. As he was born male, he couldn't be taken into Gerudo Town by his mother, even if she deigned to remain there. The only little flaw is his sister art, in that game; she doesn't bear Gerudo traits, and I'd imagine she would, based on the other Gerudo kids we see.
I always assumed it's the weak answer game like to use of immersion; Link is supposed to be our silent, self-insert vessel, and so we rarely get any info of his family because then it doesn't conflict with our ability to feel like Link is us. I'm not personally a fan of this, but it is a well-worn trope. I would love a game where we get to see his family; make Link feel more a part of his world, and less just my avenue to experience it through.

Tbh in regards to Ocarina of Time, his parentage seems to have close bonds with the Royal Family since Zelda says his name sounds familiar. His father was most likely a knight who, when the Civil War broke out went to serve in it. Meanwhile Link and his mother get caught up in the fighting and she takes on a heavy wound. She then runs towards the Kokiri Forest in spite of that wound. The golden goddesses knowing Link was a child of destiny gave their blessings to his mother and him to enter the forest, where she beseeches the Great Deku Tree to take him in and care for him since she doesn't have long to live.

Well a non canon manga of the very first Zelda game does have Link and Zelda being siblings. Though it's through an affair that Zelda's mom had with some elf guy because elves exist in this manga and it doesn't seem that Link and Zelda really know about the affair that resulted in Link or that they're siblings. Yeah there's some weirdness there as expected as the Legend of Zelda wasn't established as a franchise at the time the manga was written.

I believe that maybe SOME links and Zeldas are related
Especielly because of the relatively low population and Zelda and link having similar features like blonde hair
However there are games where Zelda and Link are clearly in love
      I believe that
A hero is born from an unrelated family with the spirit of the hero and brought onto the world
He does his job and settles down with the Zelda of that time to continue the goddesses bloodline
Link isnt a hero because he stops ganon or saves the kingdom
Link is a hero because he allows hylia's bloodline to continue
And Ganon is a constant threat to that bloodline
If the series ever wnded there would only be one way to do it and thats with Zelda's bloodline ending
No matter what happens to the kingdom it really doesnt matter to the godesses

My theory for OoT Link has always been that he and Zelda are twins separated when they were very young, and his mother (the queen) was severely injured before escaping the castle. • @JediLadyMisty

It could have been something as simple as during the attack the queen picked up Link and someone else, possibly Impa, picked up Zelda.
In order to throw off the attacking force they split up and fled in opposite directions. The queen could have been chased/driven into the forest by her pursuers.
She was injured at some point and in desperation prayed to the Goddesses for help and was led to the Deku Tree where she succumbed to her wounds.

I think his mother is a great fairy. This would give him passage through the kokiri forest in ocarina of time. We know that great fairies can be weakened, so it’s not impossible that they could die as well. For example a war increasing taxes and killing people would greatly affect a great fairy. I have also noticed that in games where fairies are less prevalent there’s more human family members for link. Fairies especially greater fairies are beloved by all populations who are good willed(gerudo, shiekah, goron, and etc). Just as link is! It could also explain why he’s able to use magic spells and why he’s able to use magic armor. BotW has sort of nodded to the notion that rupees are required by fairies for their magic. I then think he’s placed in a hylian family, so as he can form bonds , and not be corrupted to evil or dark intentions. For example, shadow link is a reflection of what could also become of his life choices.

There is a few issues with Link being birthed by the gods. First of all, Link in Twilight Princess is canonically the descendent of Ocarina of Time Link. Second of all, in A Link to The Past, it's implied that Link, like his uncle, is a descendent of the Knights of Hyrule, which is chosen by bloodline and may or may not be the bloodline all the heroes share.

Are we gonna talk about how it's likely or even certain that Zelda in Spirit Tracks is the granddaughter of Wind Waker's Link? That's pretty crazy to think just how often Link's spirit passes on to assist HIS OWN descendant, Zelda. The original Zelda, Zelda II, likely Minish Cap. Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, maybe Breath of the Wild 2 (guess we'll see), etc all end with Zelda and Link getting together. Each Zelda shares a lineage, so that would mean Link has been the father/ancestor of Zelda several times.

Your second idea is... eh. A bit of a lazy way to explain why Link always comes about when Hyrule needs the Hero. With their being seers, fortune tellers in Hyrule, it is easy to believe that the gods would know when something bad is about to happen and Link spirit will be needed. With the Hyrule Knights being a clan that Link is from, their are likely plenty of people that are related to Skyward Link. The women that are pregnant within the clan could be given the spirit of the Hero.

The "Born of the Goddesses" portion is a cool thought, definitely worth looking into, but I'm not fully sold. A reason, not my biggest one, but one that is up to interpretation, is the role of Demise cursing Link (and Zelda) to eternal reincarnation. If he did this, then by way of the curse, a Link will be born. Getting the Goddesses involved in that makes it seem less like it's the Curse on Link's part. Then he'd just be created on their schedule, not by the Curse. And at that point, why go through the trouble if creating this dude over and over again instead of personally going to Hyrule to rid it of the evildoers?
Just getting a thought out there. Good video!

I've never quite bought the Wind Waker idea that Link isn't the chosen hero.
Most of the conversations are about him not being the Hero of Time as if they expected the hero to be OoT Link not a new Link. If you think about it, from Hyrule's perspective the Hero of Time walked out of the Temple of Time one day beat Ganon and then disappeared again. It is possible that it was assumed that the next chosen hero would be literally the same person, the Hero of Time. He would appear again from nowhere having traveled in time to the next time where he was needed.
Add that to the fact that the Hero of Time was a dead ringer for the Hero of the Sky who also traveled through time maybe the hero was thought to be a single traveler.

The way I think of it is that, much like the queen of Hyrule, the mother of the Hero passes on soon after she gives birth. Zelda and Link never have mothers around for too long, and their deaths are always mysterious, so maybe the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero drain more out of the mothers, causing them to not be able to recover very well, leading to their deaths. Each Link could be a descendent from a previous Link (any of the prior, not necessarily the one immediately before them on the timeline), as each Zelda is the descendant of the first Zelda. Even Wind Waker Link could be the descendant of a previous Link (not Oot Link, possibly Minish Cap Link), just as Zeldas are descendants from the royal family. It would likely skip several generations, but I could see it as a possibility.

To go off of Links family in Botw. The house in Hateno village, I always thought could possibly be the sight where he and his family lived before Calamity. In the game we here Bolson explain how the previous owner left one hundred years earlier to fight for Hyrule during the Great Calamity. I’m not saying for sure that out of all the soldiers that left to defend Hyrule, this was the house that Link and his father lived in. However, this is a video game, so the odds are likely. Links farther could have possibly died early on in his life, and he was left as the sole owner of the house (also with a possible sister) and when signs of the Calamity began to appear, Link might have left the home to follow the path his father took either because he was inspired by him, or maybe it was a way to provide for himself (and his possible sister). Or his father was still alive, and once the Calamity returned he decided to leave the house to go help Link and Zelda on their mission. I’m honestly not for sure with this theory, but I do like the idea of Link being able to buy the house where he was once raised in without even remembering.

Can't answer for most of the Links heritage, but I remember theories popping up years ago when I was a lot younger and there was one I always found fun and it was "The Identity of Links mom in OoT is... The Queen of Hyrule." What I always found fun about it is that there's really not anything in OoT that contradicts this theory. There was some big conflict driving Links mother away and into the woods where she presumably succumbed to her injuries, Zelda is at this point only really known in game to have a father; The King of Hyrule with no queen or mother mentioned to my knowledge. Link has a deceased mother but no known father. Blonde hair and Blue Eyes is a recessive trait and Link and Zelda are two of the characters in OoT that have both. It makes OoT a journey of lost siblings trying to save the kingdom together.
The couple of times I've mentioned this theory it is usually treated unpopularly with peeps being like "WHUUUT? But that would make Link and Zelda INCEST!?!?!" But like... Notice in no timeline split from OoT does THAT Link get together with Zelda? So no it wouldn't.

If we get Link's parents I can imagine hilarity in regards to how protective they'd be. Imagine: Link falls in battle. Suddenly in the distance you hear a banshee shriek. The boss door gets busted down and in storms...Links mom with cast iron pan. "HOW DARENL YOU HURT MY BABY?!" The bane if evil...Mama Link

It's the Disney curse: at least one parent must be dead at all times, but being an orphan is preferred.

I wonder how many times Link spiritually dodged child support it’s like every next life like tells his descendants. I was your great grandfather in a past life😎👍🏽🤔😳😂😂😂

Hmm, i hope we get something about his family in botw2, but also quick theory, what if when the master sword was broken and left in the forest to heal, demise either got out or has a way to get out, and what if demise is puppeteering corpse Ganon, possibly through malice?

I think Link never has a family, because Nintendo thinks that that's necessary for that whole "Link is a blank slate" stick and that him having parents would '"ruin the immersion".

What if…. Now hear me out…. What if, because Link possesses/is the bearer of/is representative of the Triforce of Courage… that he never has both parents (and rarely has any) because for the Hero to be born, it takes a great act of courage? Like in Ocarina of Time, Links mother having the courage to raise her son during the war, and while fatally wounded, traversing the Lost Woods ANYWAY in hopes of saving her child? What if the goddesses felt that was a worthy sacrifice/act of courage to bear the Hero?
And/or, Farore, the Goddess of the Triforce of Courage is the goddess of all life. What if she just…. Manifests the Hero into existence? Parents or no parents? Or maybe it’s a combination of both, Farore/all of the goddesses seeing the universe as a whole (what was, what is, and what will be), and determining the most worthy act of courage - if there is one, ie Wind Waker - and manifest the Hero into being, essentially bestowing the Hero to the person who has committed/is commuting/will commit the worthy act?

I could see his lack of family being a direct link to the gods weaving his fate. Put an important figure in his life in danger and that's his main drive to be a hero. As little as we know about Link himself he's always had a comfortable life pre hero with no real reason to step up unless it was someone asked him to do some task. If you want to take Age of Calamity as any sort of canon towards more backstory of the characters it shows Link actually really didn't want to be a champion and that responsibility completely changed his personality and the other champions made comments about it.
I see his friendships and family figures being his main drive to starting his journey to being a hero

I always figured that the man in the concept art for botw Link's family was his uncle as a reference to Smith since his appearance seems very blacksmith-like to me. I thought that maybe Link never really knew his father on a personal level and instead lived away from him for the majority of the time since his father was assumedly a great knight. Of course, this was all just me going off my own fictional family dynamic preferences instead of hyperfocusing on the very little info we get about his potential family.
