Pinned comment. I hear you. My starter, my starter.... Use either blah blah blah. I'll explain. Obviously it would have been better if I plugged in the block heater. But I didn't know it was going to be this cold 3 days prior to this. Second, either is TERRIBLE to a truck. Here's why. When you use either it cleans off the oil on the piston rings. This allows the parts to wear out rapidly. The old saying is "Diesels get addicted to either." This is true. The more you use it, the more wear you produce. The more wear the less compression. Diesels like this fire on heat of compression. So the less compression the less heat. So now the more you need the either. Kinda like a drug addiction. The more you use, the more you need.
With all this being said what is cheaper, a $400 starter if it fails or a complete in-frame overhaul? I choose the starter.

You'll never have a cold start problem with an 8V92 TT in there. Just add a APU with a air compressor on the side, and have an air starter for the Detroit.

When you get to the airport, there’s this great spot just past the airport access road called “Cricket Car Hop”. Obviously depends on the time you roll through. Delicious food, and there’s a pull off for trucks. I know you’ve been hurting for a good meal! Drive safe!

Hey man , LOVE the channel, and I'm a real fan of Orwell, that's a bad ass rig, sounds great. Im a 55 year old guy , reminds me of the rigs when I was a kid. I like the fact that you resurrected an older truck with no DEF or any of the other pollution control BS and brought that baby back to life with your own two hands, that's great. I'm in my 5th week of CDL school, with about 4 more months to go. Its a bit of a career change for me after 20 years in the construction industry, I'm looking forward to it. Funny , but the school im attending is in Bridgeport where you dropped off that load at Igor Sikorsky airport. Well, keep up the good work brother, I'm paying attention, trying to pick up pointers!! Peace.

In 1982 I started working as a diesel mechanic, in a small repair shop in Sussex county nj. Even back then the low boys had small gas engine to work a hydraulic Piston to separate the goose neck. I did load an old D9 dozzer up on to a non-detachable low boy. I was 17 and the driver asked if I could do it, and I lied and said sure. I did it, and I'm smiling now just thinking about it. Back in the 1980s there was so much building going on we were working 7 days a week. We were the only repair shop around so we worked on all types of heavy equipment and of course trucks mostly Mack's (dump, cement, boom and tractors).

Kind of easy put pressure on shifter while you are accelerating then let up on the accelerator and it should slide out of gear then let the RPM drop some then put light pressure to shift into the next year if you do it correctly it will go into gear with no problem. It takes a little practice but it's not really difficult

seeing you starting that CAT cold like that reminded me of the old tow truck my grandfather had ,,,it had a 6V-92 detroit and hearing that cat reminded me of the way it started on cold mornings,,,it would crack and pop and cackle till it finally got the cylinders warm enough ,even a snort of ether didn't help ,,he always said if you wanna start that detroit no matter what the weather ,,you turn the key and crank it till it lights

    • @fsctrucking

@@fsctrucking i personally would recommend getting an APU ,,even for a classic truck like Orwell ,it's a great investment and makes cold starts so much easier ,,i own a couple of classic trucks myself and i have added APU units to both of them ,,i don't drive much long distance anymore ,i live in western iowa and do a lot of farm work, hauling mostly grain and equipment but occasionally transporting cattle for several of the local feed lots ,,APU is a great way to avoid a dead battery too ,,and in my case just 2 weeks ago my APU got me home when the alternator in my 1976 GMC cabover failed ,when i discovered that the battery wasn't charging , i pushed the start button on the APU and it charges the battery while it's running

There is a lot of truths and myths out there with regards to using ether for starting. In my view you need a hell of a lot of it to be able to wash the bores of on an engine that size yet it also doesn’t pay to fill the air filter up with a tin of it and then wind it over as that’s wear your con rod and piston damage comes from with preignition some manufactures used to fit this as standard figment to trucks and plant for cold climates. The best practices is to have the engine Turing on the starter and then spray in so as to not overload the bores with it.not easy if your on your own though. If we all had crystal balls it would of been plugged in but it wasn’t so all you can do is try the starter. Once turning over you can’t stop as it’s taken the best bite from the battery’s and if you do stop it won’t turn over again so keep turning and preying at the same time.I think we all like to think we would have done things better but in reality I would not have done any different. In the uk we don’t get long bouts of cold anymore in the way that you do in the us just a curious question but can you plug in your trucks whilst parked in truck stops or is it back to long cranking in the mornings I no some people used to say leave them running all night but as we know modern engines and long tick over periods doesn’t bode well for exhaust after treatment i know that’s not an issue with your truck but just curious

I guess non of the people complaining about starter abuse, 30 seconds of cranking in case you didn’t know, have never been in the shop when they are trying to bleed the fuel system.

It might be better if you install a Webasto diesel parking heater with a timer. With the timer you can set when the engine and the cabin should be preheated. The auxiliary heater extends the service life of the engine. I wish you an accident-free journey.

    Hi
Why don't you put the extensions on the sides, when a machine or a truck exceeds the width of the trailer ?.
And how much does a truck like this weigh?
Thanks for the vidéo ....Good road.

I enjoy watching your videos. I only rode in those old cab-overs one time a long time ago, and my body still hurts, lol. J/K. However, I am glad that you have resurrected one. :)
Anyway, I like that you show how you load and unload,, because I have learned a lot about flat bedding from watching your videos. Also, the external views, while you are driving, is really great.
