Hey friends! If you're watching this video, you probably know what you're in for already. About a year ago, a plugin became available that allowed you to connect your Zotero reference manager to your Notion databases. I made a video tutorial on how to set that up, but there have been updates to both the Zotero plugin and Notion itself, so this is an updated tutorial. If you're watching this in 2023, this is the one you need.
Personally, this comes at a good time for me because I'm a PhD student who's been off books for the past year, but I'm slowly dipping my toes back into the academic waters. The first thing I'm doing is organising all of my files, so I'm going to set up this integration from scratch and we'll do it together. Mind-blowing, I know. Anyway, let's get into it!
First, you need to create a database in Notion that will act as the place into which all of your references from Zotero will go. The database that you will use as the link between Notion and Zotero has to have certain specific properties, and thankfully, the Notero gods have already created a Notion template for you to download and use yourself. We're going to go ahead and do that first (access the plug in and the notion templates here - github.com/dvanoni/notero).
Go to the GitHub page (same link github.com/dvanoni/notero) for the plugin itself, and if you scroll down the page, you'll find a section that allows you to download two versions of essentially the same database. One is a little bit more simple than the other, and that's the one we're going to go for. Go through all the necessary steps, download it, and drag it to the place that you want it to be. I'm going to label it differently and call it "Literature Inbox" because that's where I want this database section.
Step 2 is to create an integration to go into this specific database. In order to do that, there is a second link in the description box down below that will lead you to the My Integrations web page for Notion ( www.notion.so/my-integrations ). You're going to set up a new integration, and the instructions for doing that are on the screen. Now you should have an option under the "Tools" tab in Zotero for Notero preferences. If you don't, then I suggest restarting Zotero once you've added that plugin and then going into Notero preferences.
Here you're going to need two things. Once that integration is set up, you're going to go back to your Literature Inbox database and click on the three dots at the top of the page. You're going to scroll down to the Connections section and add a connection. Then, in the search bar, type in the name of the integration that you've just created, click on it, and copy the key from the integration token. Paste it in the first empty bar in this Notero preferences section of Zotero. The second piece of information you need is the database ID. Again, you're going to go into Notion and click on those three dots at the top of the page. Go to "Copy link," and then open a blank page in any app. Paste the link, and within that link you'll see a series of numbers running after the "/" sign and stopping before "?". Copy that series of digits, and that's your database ID, which you will paste into the Notero preferences box back in Zotero.
The next step in my workflow is to curate my critical notes about this particular source. I use a critical thinking Notion template which I link and talk about in another video, which I'll link down below. I hope that this video served its purpose and that you now have a very neat with Heidi integration between Zotero and Notion set-up. If you got value from this video, go ahead and hit the like button, and until I see you in the next one, take care of yourself, be kind to yourself, and thank you so much for watching.

Hi guys! I ran into some problems when installing the Notero plugin. Regardless of all the tutorials I watched my Zotero citations just wouldn't synchronize with Notion automatically when I added new ones. So in case you're running into the same issue: try right click on the citation and all the way on the bottom it says "Sync with Notion". Haven't found a way to synchronize automatically instead of manually but at least it solves my problem for now. Just thought I'd share :)

    • @Emily-vp7xj
      @Emily-vp7xj 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Emily! :D I haven't found any other solution tbh but I also have to admit that I haven't tried. I just figured out that if you don't want to synchronize every single citation you add to Zotero, you can also do the right cklick and "sync with Notion" on your library name. That sould sync everything you recently added :) @@EmilyDarnell-nu1xd

@@HollyJaneYT Actually, I think there was a problem with my Zotero. After a clean re-install, it's exactly where you said it is on my machine too. My apologies!

    Hey Holly,
first of all, thank you for this great tutorial!
But I have got a problem, hopefully you or somebody else can help me because I am going nuts right now.
So I synchronized all the literature but then I decided I want to change how it is saved into Notion by just saving the Authors name and date. So I deleted all the literature in notion, changed the synchronizing settings to just save the Autors name and date and then synchronized again. But it did not work.
"APIResponseError: Can't update a page that is archived. You must unarchive the page before updating."
I had a look git hub where is written: "Note that deleting a Notion page moves it into the trash, and the Notion API refers to this as "archived." Notero associates Zotero items with Notion pages through a link named Notion attached to the item. To resolve the issue, delete this link attachment on the offending item(s) and then perform the sync again.
But how do I delete this link? I tried in Notion als well als in Zotero but it does not work!
    Hopefully somebody can help.
    Thank you

Firstly, I’m sorry for the delay in replying!
secondly: this happened to me too, and what I had to do was delete the Notion file attached to the item in Zotero - like when you click on the Zotero item to get the pdf for example you need to delete the Notion file attached, and then re-upload the whole item (the paper, book, chapter etc) to the Zotero folder you’ve synced to Notion. I really hope that helps!

Thank you for this video. However, mine is not syncing. I added a 'book' in Zotero to test if it would sync to the Notion template, but it's empty. Any idea what this could be? I followed the instructions.

I’m sorry it hasn’t worked smoothly. Have you created a specific Notion folder in Zotero and created access to that folder specifically?

@@HollyJaneYT I want it to have full access to everything in the one folder I have. It's not labeled "Notero" but it's a folder in Zotero. I even undid everything and tried to do it again and it still won't sync. It says "query failed validation. Fix one: Query.v should be not present... etc.

I had the same problem until I right-clicked the folder in Zotero and selected "sync to Notion" and it finally worked! Hope that helps.

No results... yet. Tried your very clear method several times without successful transfer my current Notero data to a new Notion project area. I think my problem area is in the Zotero Notion Preferences setup. After Integration Token and Database ID and File Sync preferences (checked accordingly) clicking "OK" = nothing. I even moved subject topics from my Group Library to My Library. I do not see a Notion link on my Zotero page after following the steps... Am I missing something in what I just journaled here?

HAH... it's working! Apparently, Notion and Zotero needed "a moment" to coordinate. All is well and a very useful bridge solution that also will help my papers. Many thanks!

Do you know if there is such a thing for Mendeley?

Hi Laís - I’m sorry, I’ve never used Mendeley so do not know the answer to this!

Hmmm. I clicked on the link for the second step but it tells me the content does not exist. I'll keep trying...

Oh - that’s annoying. I’m just EJ route to work right now but I’ll check it when I’m home in an hour! Sorry Melissa. X
