    00:00 - 02:20 - Introduction
02:20 - 04:40 - Some Brief Context for What I'm Sharing from Zotero into Notion + Why
    04:40 - 06:30 - Step One | Notion Database + Notion Internal Integration Token
06:32 - 06:43 Step Two | Create the Database in Notion
06:44 - 07:10 - Step Three | Create the Connection Between Zotero and Notion
    07:10 - 07:45 - Step Four | Finding the Database ID
    07:45 - 08:23 - Step Five | Download the Notero Plug-In and Install
    08:24 - 09:11 - Step Six | Set the Notero Preferences
    09:12 - 10:10 - Some Limitations to Notero
    1. First, set up a Notion Integration Token. Go to the linke www.notion.so/my-integrations and, once you've logged in to your Notion, press the button "New Integration". Label it whatever you like e.g. Zotero, and select the workspace you want the database to appear in. Once you are happy with the privacy settings, click SUBMIT.
    2. Set up the database in NOTION to which you want to direct the Zotero database information. I used an existing database for this exact purpose, which you can find at this link and also another template in this article here. NOTE: Read this article for exact details as to how to configure the database should you wish to set one up yourself.
    3. Link the Notion database to the Integration Token. You do this by going to the Share button on the database page in Notion. Click invite, and you should see your recently-created Integration key. Select it to provide access to it.
    4. Download the Notero plug-in at github.com/dvanoni/notero. Once downloaded, open Zotero. Click Tools, and then Add-Ons. Drag the downloaded .xpi file into the pop-up window, or go to the settings wheel at the top right-hand corner of the pop-up and select Install Add-On from File. Re-start Zotero.
    5. Once Zotero re-opens, go to the Tools tab once more. Select Notero Preferences. Copy and past the Integration Token Key, which you'll find on the My Integration page within your Notion browser. Also add in the database ID that belongs to the Notion database which you've set up. You'll find that going to the database in question, click "Copy Link", paste the link into any text editor and select the 32 characters between the first forward slash in the URL, all the way to the question mark. E.g. the database in the following example URL www.notion.so/121212121212121... would be 12121212121212121212121212121212.
    5. The final step in the Notero preferences is to select the folder in Zotero which you wish to sync into Notion.
THE ABOVE IS A SUMMARY OF THE FULL TUTORIAL.
The full tutorial is available as an article at the following link.
I hope it proves useful to you! Please share your experiences with Notero in the comments below, click the like/subscribe button if this tutorial was valuable :)
    Hugs from NYC,
    Holly

Thanks for the video...even though an older one it was much easier to follow than many others. The helpful comments from others also helped a lot to overcome some of the hiccups trying to set up and sync. 🙂

For anyone not finding Integration in invite, I got this reply from Notion:
    Hi James,
Stephen here. Thanks for your patience as this was escalated to me.
Recently there has been a change to how you share pages with internal and public integrations.
Now, via the triple-dot (...) menu in the top right of a page, you will see Add connections and from there you can add the integration you need.
For more information on what's changed you can consult our Help Center article here.
    Kind regards,
    Stephen

You’re the research goddess! Thank you soo soo much. Saved me 5 lives. Just a new update in the share button- I clicked the … three buttons and found ‘connections’, then hovered over that button and found my integration! And in the last stage I selected the papers I wanted to sync from Zotero to notion and rightclicked and chose ‘sync to notion’. It took me atleast 2 hrs to figure it all out, but finally did it. I am in time crunch. Glad I did it. Thank you!!

I got stuck in the last phase: I saw the green check mark in Zotero next to the files I wanted to sync, but then just wasn't seeing the items in Notion. So, what I did, I highlighted all the items in the synced file and then left-click to see the drop-down, and chose "Sync to Notion" and that worked!! Thank you for the vid!

Fantastic video and workaround!! I am just now getting serious about using Notion for my teaching and geo ed and edtech related work. This is a life saver! I found it very helpful to have both your video and the ReadME document available while I was doing this. I also messed up on the original database sync (forgot to duplicate the Notero database with all of the correct properties) and was able to easily create a new one. Once I removed the #notion, it re-synced with no problem!! I know you made this a few months ago, but this is what I love about TH-cam! Stuff you need is waiting for you to find it...and when you are ready, the 👩🏻‍🏫 will appear 😉! Thank you!!

For those confused at the very last step as to why their files arent syncing,
Where she moves all the files from the "Untitled" folder to the folder she has selected to sync ("Transfer Exam Literature..."); that moving of all those files is what makes all the files start to sync (the step she shows us as happening real time)

I have one question left: I haft to write multiple papers at a time. So I would love to have several of these databases synced with different Zotero folders. How do I do this? I copy the database into a new page, but what to do next? Thank you so much!

So, I have been TRYING to do this. I keep hitting a road block at the Notero plug-in stage as they only give you the option to provide one integration key. And in theory, you would have TWO integration keys if you have two Zotero databases. I'm working on a workaround, let me know if you figure it out though! Thanks for the suggestion :)

I just commented somewhere down below that I've been trying to find a workaround for this but haven't yet managed it! Thank you for the tutorial! I have a quick question though- since you can only sync in one folder into the database, is there a way that you tag them in your notion according to those 'themes' you have on your zotero? or is there a reason why you only synced 1 folder/theme into your notion?

    • @HollyJaneYT
      @HollyJaneYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Excellent question. So, I’m at a point in my research where I have a very clear paper to write, with very defined bibliography. I also - conveniently - only just discovered Notero before I began planning for this paper, which is why I only have one folder, one database. I just made a new folder for this particular paper. That being said, I think you are able to set up multiple databases to correlate to multiple folders between Notion and Zotero. You need to set them up as individual integrations I believe. I’ll experiment next week and try myself but if you try to do this, let me know via this comment thread how you get on!

The one thing this vid needs, the part where we all sigh and feel like we have accomplished something, isn't explained -- how to actually populate the notion Notero. To do that in a non-destructive way: (1) create a new zotero collection called noterozotero (or whatever you want) (2) go to tools > notero preferences and make sure the folder you just named is checked (3) drag everything you want to sync to your notion db into that folder.

If I add a film or web page to the Zotero collection that is connected to my Notion, Notero simply does not create a new item in the database. • @HollyJaneYT
      @HollyJaneYT  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Francesco. I’m sorry for the late reply. I’ve not had that problem myself but it sounds like there is a gap in the formula code related to that item type that is causing the problem. I’m afraid I’m not a coder so I can’t offer a solution right now but perhaps you can explore the properties section of the original Notero database template and see if you can find a solution that way. Hope it gets sorted for you!

(Brb, ill edit this comment later)
So as a new Zotero introductee, I was wondering how to keep track of highlights to use as quotes, and add notes.
I'm quite technical, web centric. URLs are so much nocer as way to make references. Permalinks. But, I'm starting this academic life after 20y being a professional web developer.
What I gather from your video is that to keep notes, zotero doesn't do that.
In the past decade I would use URL and folders and text files to keep ideas sorted.
But it was for curiosity and keep richer bookmarks.
How I organize notes is basically URLs where I store a copy of the page in a text file in a folder. I wrote an open source software for this. Keeping even images and everything. Then in the folder, I add a text file for notes beside the source.
I was hoping I'd be able to get an equivalent for citations and quotes.
Syncing in Notion is cool. But I'm looking how is best to manage those.
So is this because we can't highlight extracts of papers in zotero

@@HollyJaneYT I finally figured out the issue. The sync between Notion and Zotero works fine until I "exit" Zotero on my Mac. When I press the red X on the Zotero window, which usually closes an application rather than quitting it, and then reopen the window, the syncing no longer works. But if I restart Zotero, syncing works again and continues to work as long as I don't close the window. I am not sure why this works, but it does.

@@jonathanbrubaker3669 I'm so puzzled! I tried that but it didn't work for me. Anyone else? Anything else to try? It synced last week and then suddenly stopped.

@@rnbwdrm3565 Did you copy the page ID or database ID ? When clicking on "Share" and "Copy link" in the right top corner, you will copy the page ID and not the database ID. To get the database ID you need to click and the 3 dots from the database and copy the "link to the view". You then paste this link on a text app and select only the ID. Hope it will works for you ;)
