I hope everyone is doing well, friends. I'm still enjoying very much being mostly offline this term, thank you for your patience and well wishes via the comments! I'll be back making content on a regular basis when I'm ready 🙃
Just found you and love you intro!! Yes I am 48 and most likely will say something like that in my classes! I have just found out have entry to my PhD! But need to be organised and it's all new! Looked at Noton still trying to get my head around it and have also heard Zotero is good! Goodnotes I will look at !! Omg!! Thank you!😊
Love it! Mind blown! I’ve never used that url link thingy in Zotero but now I see its usefulness! I also use GoodNotes and Zotero but ventured away from Notion for all the reasons you have mentioned about it’s tendency to complexity (due to human input) and tried obsidian; I’m back to Notion! thanks for sharing!
Holly this is so useful! Thank you so much! I use the second brain system in Notion too, and GoodNotes for annotating notes but this is just the final piece to the puzzle and my organisation brain is so happy! So, in essence, thank you!
yeah just what I needed. Started my phd last week, and I am getting to grips with the recording my reading in an effective manner. I have always used GoodNotes, (I am NOT a Notion fan) so its nice to see your way of incorporating Goodnotes with Zotero, I am going to try it out now. Cheers
Another ‘laugh out loud’ vid from you❤ Great to have you back and I always love the PhD content. Keep up the great work and take care of yourself. Liz xx
I think it will work for me as well! Thanks a lot! I was struggling with this because I need all these three different "interfaces". Maybe I'll come back later and tell you if I used your hints :)
I used the same phrase in one of my classes and was quickly told that it was not cool! After defending the cat’s honor, I had to explain what a euphemism was. 🤣
Hollllllly you’re back! Such a joy to see a new video - such a comprehensive and helpful one too 🩵 I hope you’re well! And good luck to all of the fellow tired phd people here
I'm a mendeley user trying this workflow and so far, so good. Thank you so much. I was looking for a way to keep my pdf library organized and linked without duplicating files or uploads for each app. Still trying to make it work with samsung notes on my tablet!
Thank you for this. I note you have an older video that suggests zotero app and notion together could do the job without goodnotes, did it not work out? Or is this another option?
Hi Jeff - its been a while since I checked but I think it was the property URL in Zotero, and then it transferred neatly into Notion. I hope that helps!
I prefer to annotate in Good Notes - after trialling Zotero for a few months, I preferred Good Notes, but it could just be that I'm a fussy cow because the Zotero iPad app works just fine! Do whatever works for you :)
@@HollyJaneYT, thanks! I was just curious! I haven't used GoodNotes myself, and am inclined to not add in another app if I don't need to. Would love to see what your GoodNotes set up looks like sometime when you have the bandwidth!
Hi, firstly thank you for your videos 🎉 i wanna ask something, goodnotes with annotations makes the files too big as far as i know. is it possible yo use directly zotero for reading too? i guess it also lets you highlight when reading
Yes, Zotero has an integrated note taking system which most people use I believe instead of Goodnotes if they’re already using Zotero. I’m glad the videos help! x
Ok big question - why use goodnotes for annotation and not Zotero? FYI: I am an Obsidian and Zotero user and use Zotero A LOT so am curious how goodnotes fits in this workflow 🤷♂
It makes much more sense to use Zotero, and cut out goodnotes, but I’ve included in this tutorial for a couple of reasons: (i) a lot of my subscribers still use good notes and might not necessarily want to switch to Zotero, and (ii) from a selfish point of view, I wanted to include Good Notes as option in this tutorial because I thought it would receive more traction in the algorithm. How are you finding Obsidian? The temptation to switch is huge at times.
Depends what the workflow looks like but if you want to do all annotating in Goodnotes then just delete the local file and use the link from Goodnotes to act as the pathway to the annotated version you want to refer to.

Thanks for the video Holly. I’ll be looking into good notes. Still trying to find a note taking app that works for me. Do you keep a back up of your work on your literature review that you have created in Notion? I ran into an issue where I was offline (long-haul travel) and couldn’t access notion. I am a new notion/zotero user for my PhD. If you have tips or a work around I’d love to hear it! Thanks!
Hey Sarah, I do periodically back up my Notion pages - I download the Notion pages, via the export feature in the desktop app. And speaking of the desktop app - I can work in the desktop app with about 95% functionality when I'm working offline. Have you been working in a browser? If so, I'd recommend the desktop app!
Thanks, Holly for another super cool video. I must say that the video you made brilliantly showing how to integrate Zotero and Notion is LIFE-SAVING-A-GIFT-FROM-THE-GODS!!! Super thanks. I was just wondering, though - if you don't mind sharing it ofc - any particular reason why taking notes on good notes and not on Zotero straightway? Thanks again
Glad it was helpful! I'm actually still using Zotero from time to time to make notes on - I just wanted to share the alternative option for those why might not actually like Zotero, or don't use it! x
Thank you for this video! Makes the whole literature process a lot easier 😅😅😅 just a quick question: I watched the video for 3-4 times now, but the Goodnotes-Link doesn‘t sync in my notion sheet. Did I miss something? Thanks for your help 🙏🏼

Holly Jane...great video! Question...which property did you use to map the goodnotes link in Zotero to your Notion database?
Hi Jeff - its been a while since I checked but I think it was the property URL in Zotero, and then it transferred neatly into Notion. I hope that helps!
Thanks! I leveraged your idea, but instead of Goodnote, I’m linking to documents that I’ve coded in Atlas.ti
So have you decided to not annotate in the Zotero iPad app?
I prefer to annotate in Good Notes - after trialling Zotero for a few months, I preferred Good Notes, but it could just be that I'm a fussy cow because the Zotero iPad app works just fine! Do whatever works for you :)

Hello ! I saw another video into you talked about notes in Zotero. You don't use Zotero anymore ? ;) (sorry for my english...)
I do! I just like to explore with other apps sometimes :)
I'm sorry, I'm confused. What if the paper *does* come with a download, what do you do?

@@HollyJaneYT have you used an add-on to work around the storage limit in Zotero?
