  • Welcome to an exclusive episode of LiSTNR's The Briefing.
As the death and devastation continues in Gaza, students across the world began protesting against Israel’s murder of defenceless Palestinian citizens, particularly children. Encampments were established at campuses across the US and in Australia in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne.
Students of the University of Melbourne negotiated to leave the campus on a promise from the uni that it would disclose its ties to weapons companies within a month of ending the encampment.
In the meantime, the university tracked students who had entered one of the buildings on campus to conduct a sit-in. It has now used Wi-Fi data and CCTV footage to potentially use against the students at disciplinary hearings due to start today - which could lead to their suspension or expulsion.
In this episode of The Briefing, Antoinette Lattouf sits down with two of the students to find out how they feel about being tracked and spied on, despite the university pledging it wouldn’t use tech to track them.

I admire these young people. The adults in this country need to wake up and listen to the Heart felt wisdom of our young people. Shame on them for turning away at this tragic time.

Got to love this poor me mentality, protesters occupied the University, they were asked to leave by the University or they police will be involved, they refused to leave so the police were called. most of the students said they were willing to risk arrest (plenty of footage). How hard is to understand you were asked to leave and refused to, you do not have a right to be on any campus when you have been asked to leave, you deserve all you get. Its there building, they can take photos of you all they like, don't like it then don't attend. Absolutely ridiculous you think you have a right to occupy a campus when they clearly did not want you there. Honestly its not rocket science, most high school children could work out what is right and wrong in this situation. Make examples of them.

The University of Melbourne and Australian govt do not fund or sit idly by with regard to conflicts in any of the places you have listed. None of those conflicts involve an illegal occupation and none involve a conflict that has been running for over half a century. Israel has been told since 1967 to withdraw from the Palestinian territories under UN resolution 242. Israel according to the International Court of Justice ruling on the wall in 2004 has no right to self-defence because it is an illegal occupation and all the while the Australian govt refuses to place sanctions on Israel and allows our universities to be active participants in defence projects. BTW there is no evidence that these students were not also studying or prevented anyone else from studying either!

@@ek7390 what about when assad killed 4000 children and then another 300,000 odd thousand Syrians. And actually what's happening in nigeria is a proper genocide. We don't want foreign students in our countries causing trouble while they sponge off us. They should ho to gaza and protest. We don't want them. P.s. 82% of people killed for their religion last year were in nigeria. Alot of the people in gaza have wanted to ve martyred let's face it! Abu younis from rafah.....go check him out.

@@tethergobrrr no I think it'd be an insult to people in nigeria having genocide committed against them to say I was bored! I know they've been being slaughtered for years but doesn't that actually make it worse that nobody does anything about it! Bored!? Thats very insulting and racist to the victims.
