  • In this video I’ll show how to retrieve trouble codes from an OBD-I vehicle, a 1991 Eagle Talon (which is a Mitsubishi Eclipse), and how to test a throttle position sensor with a graphing multimeter. The TPS testing shown will also work on all three-wire potentiometers, and can be applied to any vehicle. The code retrieval procedure shown is make/model specific, so consult your service information for your application.
    Engine Performance Diagnostics chapter 7
    Symptoms
    - intermittent check engine light illumination
    - hesitation on acceleration
    - surging idle
    Fix
    - replace faulty throttle position sensor
    Tests shown
    - retrieving trouble codes manually from an OBD-I vehicle
    - using a graphing multimeter during trouble code retrieval
    - how to test a 3-wire potentiometer without a wiring diagram (all types)
    - performing a TPS ‘sweep test’ using a graphing multimeter
    - using heat and vibration to expose electrical faults
    Tools used
    - graphing multimeter

    This guy is the master. I love the way he explains everything. His words let you know he really becomes one with the systems he's testing. Almost as if he flies inside the damn electronics and analyses from within. I bow to his superior knowledge. He's the reason I am a mobile mechanic. 2 years studying and with his lessons I felt comfident enough to go out there and charge. Not bad at auto electrics now and its Paul I have to thank entirely. 11/10 dude.

    My Subaru has the same symptoms described in the video. I've been suspecting the TPS. Surging idle, high idle, low idle, wandering idle, poor acceleration; then it runs perfect. Sometimes I shut it off and restart it and then it runs perfect.
    I'll test it with a DVOM.
    Great video and great explanations, by the way. Wire harness integrity test was a plus.

    Thanks to your videos I have a 2001 Mustang that runs like new..Since changing the TPS First time I have ran it was this morning. 50 plus miles. Passing gear was great and it didn't mess up at all downshifting out of over drive. Nor has it accelerated on it's own lol.
    - Now if I can make sure the coils are good with the multi-meter ill be happy. Two primary coils read 1.6 an the last was 1.0. Not sure if this is normal. Haven't checked the secondaries yet. Got to stop this header leak on the drivers side an hopefully it will stop the hesitation some more even. :) You are the man !

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ohmmeter is only good sometimes. If 1.6 is your spec, then I do not like the 1.0 coil, but one of your 1.6 ohm coils could still be bad. In other words if it tests good it could still be bad, if it tests bad it's bad.
      Make sense?
      Use Mode 6 on your OBD-II scanner to ID which cylinder is misfiring. I think it is test ID $53? I have some videos on this
      I show it here th-cam.com/video/6kvYjYT1_mM/w-d-xo.html
      Thanks so much! It is always a pleasure to help someone who can help themselves and are not just looking for silver bullet fixes. Or what part to try next.

    If the TPS tested OK, how would you test for a bad throttle actuator motor (or solenoid) ?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are talking about an electronic throttle body, the motor circuit is a reverse polarity design. A scan tool with bi-directional controls and the ability to look at desired and actual commands is key in troubleshooting those.

I was wondering if you could upload a video on CAN? my friend has a 1999 Volkswagen Passat 1.9tdi automatic (I mostly work on diesels). When I scan the car with VAGCOM I get fault codes from modules on the car that there is no communication with the PCM and the PCM doesnt even come up on the scan. I found the problem is 7.8 Mega ohms of resistance between the CAN wires

    I have Elsawin, Bosch ESI tronic, and autodata but none of these show a CAN diagram, I understand about terminating resistors but dont know were these would be located, it must be a bad connection or wire somewhere between the PCM and Gateway, but havn't a clue were the gateway is. Any light you could throw on terminating resistors and CAN would be awesome. Also I lost my login password for your ebook, do you know how I can find this again?

    Thanks for videos Danner, i have same engine with same intake also same tps on my 1994 Hyundai sonata a/t ( 3 wires means not included idle position censor in tps), my 1st question is 0,57 is a standart voltage for this type tps? 2nd how can i get true position for Tps? i know its working good but its not set true position on there, I have shop manual but that just say " if its not on true position, you can see shift lock issue with A/T tranny." so if i set 0,57 mv on tps than mean is it ok?

    Gr8. Vid there. I am
    Trying to figure out an interment surging when at idle.
    I was thinking it could be. TPS or IAC
    .
    Recently throttle body was removed as part of valve cover gasket replacement
    2001 maxima
    When it was all put back
    I got some strange idle and p0505
    Found an air intake tube leak . And the p0505 never came back
    Then found a Sticky throttle and found a loose bolts for the throttle cable .
    Now I get some random idle rev up and down when sitting in park after maybe driving a bit and then sits idle if for like 3 mins ( like waiting for a pick up order)
    I have viewed live data on AD410 scanner and I see tps voltage moving and graph looks ok. I just haven’t been able to to get my scanner on it when it’s happening
    Ideas?

    Do I have to reset the ECU after TPS replacement?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On some cars yes, on others no. The ECM uses a "minimum TPS voltage" number that is learned and is retained in memory. New cars will issue a relearn on every key cycle and older cars it would only rewrite when battery voltage is interrupted. Make sense?

    • @lszek2186
      @lszek2186 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does it mean the ECM is still (even if I already changed the TPS) substituting until I remove the negative terminal of the battery?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not substituting but using the old TPS minimum voltage signal. This can cause a very high idle speed among other things.
