An Intimate Encounter with Your EGO: Ahankara in Advaita Vedanta

  • Inside your mind dwells a thought unlike any other, a thought that represents you. It's called ego, or I-thought, or ahankara. Discerning the nature of ego and differentiating it from the consciousness that is your true nature is a crucial step in gaining spiritual wisdom.
    Ahankara is the sense of individuality that is present in the waking state (jagrat) and dream state (svapna) but absent in deep sleep (sushupti) and samadhi. It is the ahankara that engages in action, not pure consciousness (chit, chaityanya) which is the unchanging observer or witness (sakshi) of all mental activities (vrittis) including the ahankara.
    Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha...

    Having grown up a in fundamentalist Christian household in the 1980s and just now at 46 years old realizing how harmful that view of the world and that view of the brain is…wow. I barely have words. This was eye opening for me. Thank you and I thank you for this channel 🙏🏻 many of the offerings are absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to dive in to the recent sacred landscape walks I saw pop up 🙏🏻

    The Upanishads, on my very first reading, was made instantly apparent to me that it was Truth sublime. Only reason, simple contemplation and a little consideration is all that is required to be shook to the core with it's astounding insight. Gleaned from deep observation, I am unable to find words sufficient of praise for this epic work. This teacher understands Vedanta so well, that he can simplify it without changing one speck of meaning.

      Kensho Shi,
      I’m sure a lot of work by a team goes into these videos. The level of professionalism from presentation, sound, and especially content is excellent.
      Watching Swamiji makes makes me more interested in the subject of the video and want more. I have not quite watched them all, but I should be done soon. I am planning a vacation to visit the center where he lives in New Jersey and perhaps watch a filming, be a "studio audience" of one! Lol.
      I truly appreciate these works/offerings to the world as a chance to better know myself and better act in the world. Thanks for commenting on the effort these must take so that I could add my 2¢!
      With Metta,
      John T. I.

    Those who listen to your insights are REALLY BLESSED. The reason being, there are more gurus than the followers in the present day and most are not having hearts to listen the wisdom of a very few, practice and adopt in their dynamic and busy and messy life of woely thoughts. And amidst this, there are also only few persons like you who have done so much valuable research and took pains in the interest of many to share the things learnt, penance done, contemplated and the wisdom this attained. Notwithstanding, your sharing of wisdom are soul stirring and therefore I immensely love. It is unfortunate that I am in india and your goodself is physically far thousands of miles away...... yet you are within me fortunately. My salutations to you beloved Sir.

    I love that state of absorption where the I thought loosens and vanishes while the pure delight of seeing a flower or a white clouds passing through a blue sky or fresh snow is completely unobstructed. All thoughts of self and world go quiet and vanish while world becomes experience with no mental chatter of "this is A" or "this is B" or "I am fat" or "I am frustrated because I didn't get what I wanted." This bliss is the birthright of all, but I know such experiences are nor the final story.
    Thank you, Swamiji.

    • @williamcallahan5218
      @williamcallahan5218 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Georg the "final story" is just that "a story". The first two words of the comment point to the obscuration... "I love". and if you take it further he says "that state of absorption". States come and go, "I" comes and goes. "what is" has no states, no characteristics, no qualities, is changeless, no beginning and no end. To paraphrase Huang Po ; f you can conceive it or perceive it it is not your essential nature.

    Without a strong healthy ego one is a psychopath or a sage. The world is full of weak egos that have been overrun by the unconscious. By ego, you are defining it as what psychologists call the "self representation". The True ego is the personal evolving Soul or Psychic Being, which dwells deep behind the heart. What is it that reincarnates? It is the Psychic Being. Sri Aurobindo taught extensively about the Psychic Being in his integral yoga. To not realize the Psychic Being or Soul is to commit the faux pas of the spiritual bypass.
