      @@fungo6631 yes, of course, accuracy (or the amount of assumptions the emulator does). That doesn't mean it's any less impressive, the results are reasonably accurate for the early state of the emulator.

      I disagree. The leap in hardware from a technological perspective is *way* bigger between the N64 and SNES than, for instance, the Dreamcast and the PSX.

    • @shiftfire4511
      @shiftfire4511 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @rars0n To be fair, the Dreamcast isn't much later than the PS1.
      Compare, instead, the N64 or PS1's direct successors, and you see a much larger jump...albeit, still not as large as the jump between the SNES and the first generation of true 3D consoles.
      It's still quite impressive, as Emulation is an extremely taxing task for any system to do well. The original 3DS, as an example, is closer to the Gamecube than anything else, but struggles with some SNES titles.

      I'd imagine they're also pretty inaccurate/hacky compared to modern emulators...you could technically play NES games on a 486 for example, but the old emulators used a lot of hacks/shortcuts to emulate games at a playable speed so they were nowhere near as accurate as something like Nestopia for instance.

      @rars0n 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Honestly, it's not all that impressive. The N64 came out 5 years after the SNES, right at a time when technology was *rapidly* advancing. That is to say, the 5 years between the NES and SNES wasn't nearly as much of a technological leap as the 5 years between the SNES and the N64. Consider also that the SNES was pretty much a cost-reduced design (I believe Nintendo intended to have hardware backwards compatibility with the NES, which is one of the reasons why it used a much slower 6502-based CPU rather than the Motorola 68k that everyone else was using at the time, including Apple). Even if we compare nothing but the clock speed, it's not even close: the SNES CPU is 3.58 MHz compared to the N64's 93.75 MHz, which was the fastest CPU of any console at the time. That's over 26 times the clock speed, and while such a comparison is basically meaningless, it is demonstrative of the different design criteria of the two consoles. Nintendo was swinging for the fences with the N64, which was not exactly the case with the SNES.

      That has nothing to do with it. PCs can't run some emulators well because the smarter PCs get the less able they are to run "dumb" era games without doing alot of work. The N64 isn't upgraded, only lived for 5 years and is technically "dumb" so it has an easier time running older games.
      Thats the hilarious thing everything PC elite go on about how amazing BC is on PC LMFAO, no its not really considering the amount of work and tricking new computers is needed to play old games because games get to be too dumb for current PCs.

    Another method for playing GB/C games on N64 is the Standalone Stadium GB Emulator which isolates the GB emulator in Pokemon Stadium 2 intended only for use with the Pokemon GB games, and allows you to play with any GB cart via the Transfer Pak.
    There are limitations however, the ROM size can't be too big because for most games it has to load the entire game to the N64 memory rather than stream data like it could with the Pokemon games, and I personally had some reliability issues with the Transfer Pak maintaining a secure connection during data transfer. The GB64 emulator would be a better choice for actually playing games but it's cool to see a bit more of the Transfer Pak's potential.

    A spinning cube demo from Snake & McBane with two different emulated Game Boy instances textured on the sides (along with images of Snake & McBane from The Simpsons). No sound.
    There was also the GB Hunter and Nintendo’s own GB emulator in Pokemon Stadium.
    I also had a MGD³ setup with V64jr and Multi-Xchanger. It had a GB slot for flashing the Doctor GB Card from the N64 but I don’t think anyone ever used that for playing GB games on N64. They certainly could have.

      It could be a possibility, as I do remember at various handheld like GP2X or PSP, it was always the SNES that was struggling (at least with the heavier games) but the GBA was doing so much better for some reason. Which seemed strange to me at the time as GBA had beefier CPU and more rendering features than SNES. But smaller resolution and maybe easier to emulate it's video modes (snes had bitplanes in the tiles, GBA more linear framebuffer but also tiles but without bitplanes). Anyway, I see a lot of old systems had trouble emulating SNES at good speed, even if they already figured out other later systems.

      PS1 emulation got a new lease with WiiStation, with 240p and full speed in most games, CTR almost hits full speed, its great. They implemented a new recompiler, Lightrec, but you do need to change between Dynarec and Lightrec depending on the game, Braindead 13 only runs with the Dynarec, while everything else Ive tested (Namco Museum 1-5, Skullmonkeys, Croc 1+2, and more) runs with Lightrec outstandingly well. The only real issue is using a GC controller, since it doesnt have enough buttons. @@FrameRater

      @yellowblanka6058 The Wii *does* offer nice 240p output for emulation on CRTs, though. Pis from my knowledge require more workarounds for that kind of setup specifically.
      For instance, the Pi5 ditched the 3.5mm jack that could've been used for composite, and the way to get it back through GPIO involves soldering. And that's just on the hardware side.

      > Cheaper since the market was flooded because the Wii was trendy

It didn't seem possible, but they had a handful of games working pretty well. Nothing with an enhancement chip, of course, and with many speed hacks and other tricks, and a large frame skip. There were also about 10-12 NES games that were made to work on the SNES. I have a friend with the scene group, ANTHROX, who helped code it, and he sent me some of them to test back in the 90's. 9:23 Id also like to point out that the Wii U can also (kinda) do this too, with even more power. But then again, it might not be as easy as with a Wii. Point kinda stands, lol.
    Great video in all honesty! Very interesting to see how a console that you'd THINK wouldn't have any emulators actually get some good support in the end. You should definitely try checking out the GBA's small emulator scene one day, that scene also feels right at home compared to the N64's emulator scene.

      The WiiU has Wii hardware built in more or less. It uses the same CPU architecture and similar enough GPU architecture (probably emulating the TEV with pixel shaders)
      It's more of a VM than emulator.

    I know I'm gonna be spit on for saying this but one the reasons N64 emulators aren't really popular is because the video quality of the N64 is fuzzy as hell. It's not just the cost of getting an EVERDRIVE but also the cost of upgrading your N64 with RGB etc (just watch any My Life in Gaming video if you want an in depth look at N64 graphics weirdness)
    Don't get me wrong I love the N64 but next to a PS1 through SCART (which was standard in the UK and easily done in the US) it's night and day. Not to even mention the Dreamcast which had SVIDEO and SCART as well without mods.
    I know some people love the fuzzy look of the N64 and I do too when playing N64 games. But 2D games on the N64 look awful IMO (except Mischief Makers of course)

    These emulators do prove that the tri star 64 adaptor shouldn’t had it’s own nes & snes board inside along with it’s own av out,it should,ve rely on perfect emulation of botg systems instead,the N64 is a 64bit system after all,
    But using the N64 controller for nes & snes games is debatible to me,because i generally never liked that 3 handgrip controller despite it was very innovative for it’s time,but i don’t think any other company will ever come with their 3 handgrip controller for their own system i suppose!!!
