  • More from New Zealand in 1994, this time a look at the North Island Main Trunk at several locations from Auckland to Wellington including the Raurimu Spiral. At the time of our visit the line was electrified with 25KVAC from Hamilton to Palmerston North, with a DC suburban electrification on the Wellington end.

Loved the sound of the DX in those days. The lazy 4 stroke beat of the engine.

Those were the days. Those roadrailers and GT wagons were the way of the future back then. Good luck NZ Rail

A good video, thanks. I have been in and around this county most of my life. The power poles were flicking past like the ones on the Euro Star going toward the channel tunnel in real time.

7:26 The masts are red and white, the gates are black and white. I thought they'd be the same color.
Where is (or was) this crossing?

I believe this was Hall Street which is now an over bridge.

My question is: how did you manage to obtain the film of the trains?

It's not film, it's video. I shot it myself with a Canon A1 Digital Hi8 format camcorder. I did a bit of research first to understand the railway routes, but catching the passenger trains was an exercise in reading timetables and the freights were luck of the draw.

+dieselmupke If you listen after the "Action!" you can hear a bunch of quad bikes revving up. They were filming some kind of race with them in the field across the tracks from me, should have cut that out of the soundtrack.
