Wild footage of the DFT testing on the J'ville line. I've never seen (or heard of) that before.

Interesting to see the old Ganz Mavags being hauled by a loco

Excursions would be hard to fix around the 30 minute EMU services
Would have been easier on the 80s and early 90s with hourly Saturday and no Sunday services.

What's the huge 14(!) car passenger train at 1:51? An excursion or a combined Masterton commuter+Bay Express+diverted Overlander?

The DFT's (nowadays called DFB's except for 6 DFT's in service) would be able to fit through the tunnels on the Jville if those locos were to haul a top n tail excursion train no problem lol

What’s going on at around 19:00 with those 9 locos going back n forth? I also notice the sneaky DQ sitting in there that must’ve been fresh off the boat there

Locomotive load testing, You may notice it is on The Johnsonville Line, only going as far as tunnel one due to the steep grade. At that stage the Johnsonville line wasn't cleared for mainline locos

Great to see the old vice regal car being used at this point as the research car makes me wonder when it came out of service and went to ferrymead
