      Siskel and Ebert could discuss movies and agree or sometimes disagree but always remain friends. This is the way America used to be.

      As a kid, NOBODY around loved movies and really paying attention to them the way I did. The only time anyone in my house shared my passion was on Sunday mornings, when Siskel and Ebert joined me in the television room in the basement. These guys popularized appreciating film as an artform the way Carl Sagan popularized astronomy. They are missed.

    1993, when the phrase Groundhog Day actually referred to the actual day itself and not what it means now: reliving the same event over and over.

  • @MrDougman59

    This video brought a smile to me of what once was. Siskel and Ebert are at the top of game, healthy before cruelties of life took over. Reviewing Groundhog Day, in my estimation one of the great American movies of all time.

    • @zyxwut321
      @zyxwut321 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And the best part about Groundhog Day is how, like in the plot of the movie, it grows on you and gets better over time. When it came out it was seen as a sweet, funny disposable little comedy and a strong comeback for Bill Murray, whose career had started to flag by then. Over time, though, it grew into the iconic film it's known as today and Murray's strongest performance (along with his role in "Lost in Translation", another great film).

    Even though his original review was positive, Roger Ebert wrote in 2005 that he did not fully appreciate Groundhog Day on it's initial release: "'Groundhog Day' is a film that finds its note and purpose so precisely that its genius may not be immediately noticeable. It unfolds so inevitably, is so entertaining, so apparently effortless, that you have to stand back and slap yourself before you see how good it really is. Certainly I underrated it in my original review."

    • @Chapin-pc2kz
      @Chapin-pc2kz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rxtsec1 Only certain film snobs believed she was unworthy, because her film was a comedy and the other nominees were in serious dramas, some of them period pieces. Also, she was the sole American nominee in her category. Europhile Rex Reed was the film critic who immediately started the lie that Marisa Tomei only won for _My Cousin Vinny_ because presenter Jack Palance (and fellow American) had read out the wrong name, and that the Academy engaged in a "massive cover-up" to avoid the embarrassment of admitting the mistake. That rumor quickly spread like wildfire and became an urban legend, which apparently some people still believe. The fact is, she won fair and square. History has proven the Academy right on this one, because her film/performance is the most remembered and beloved of the bunch.

    Groundhog day is a humdinger of a screenplay a d an all-time comedy great. I love how it takes a kind of innocent joke of a holiday to make it this running gag, which is also symbolic of the moral center of the protagonist: Will he, or will he not, stop being a jerk?

    All of the film locations in "Untamed Heart" are no longer there. Met Center - Ikea. North Stars - Dallas. Riverplace--Office space. Jim's Coffee Shop --? Victory Memorial Ice arena still there, but the hockey teams: Southwest, Henry, and Edison are long gone. Glen Lake Reformatory (Orphanage)--razed.
    I stay out of Minneapolis now so I don't know what Jim's Coffee Shop is.

      Groundhog Day seems to be one of those movies where you really like it at first, and then after a few more viewings you really appreciate its epic greatness. One funny thing is how, like many critics, S&E trashed "The Warriors." Ebert, again like many others, gave it a positive re-evaluation years later.
